  • Instructional designer Hayward explains ways in which seemingly simple drawing techniques can allow us to communicate more clearly by building a richer visual vocabulary of child-like images.
Kate Hayward is an instructional designer with 30+ years experience commu-nicating with the written and spoken word. In 2007, she attended the first
International VizThink Conference and recognized the power of an abandoned
skill set in simple drawings. Since 2007, she has brought her discovery to audiences around the world, teaching people to draw again, with great delight. Sometimes, she even has old crayons in her pockets.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Just Brilliant!! I bet this is one of the most interactive and engaging Ted Talks ever! Presenting a complex idea so simply and understandably, involving everyone to do something with crystal clear instructions, the super short and effective energizers in between, the variety of techniques used to facilitate everything i.e. the music, the bell, the ppt... and everything flowing smoothly... all in just 15 minutes! Most of us wouldn't even finish introducing ourselves in such a short period of time. When someone does something they're really good at, they make it look extremely easy just like this. Awesome!

Kate as usual has done a wonderful job of bringing the magic of visual thinking and communication to a simple understandable level that all can access. A great blend of scientific concepts on visual perception explained in an easy to understand way with simple everyday methods and rules that everyone can use. Great job, I loved it!

Kate, this was absolutely wonderful! You reframed the power of drawing so beautifully that I even think I could do it! (which is a minor miracle!)

Every time she says she's going to give them a minute with the music, I keep hoping she'll use the minute waltz.

Pretty good TED talk... but am I the only one very upset by the paper pamphlets they were given all having a glossy surface? I'm not trying to come from a place of art material snobbery. Most kids where I live are given copy paper to draw on which is very cheap, and works with many simple materials. In this situation if you didn't have a sharpie on hand specifically you would be kind of screwed over if you had a pencil or gel pen I feel. The likelihood of every person in the audience being frustrated that they couldn't take their drawings home and color them in with alcohol based markers without bleeding on to the next page seems very low to me, but I could sense how frustrating it would be to have a pencil in there with that glossy paper!
