I’m currently working 10-hour days, 6 days a week on two plant shutdowns. I’ve got a few videos on the computer to edit, but this is an ideal time to get a couple of computer related videos done. I’ve been building/repairing and upgrading computers for almost 20 years and normally it is not difficult as everything is modular.
Please like, share and comment on the video as this really helps me out.
I hope everyone has a great Sunday 😉

You are welcome. Some of the first videos I ever made where how to build computers, back then it took me hours to edit the HD footage as I also had to convert the edited footage using third party software, some times it would take 8 hours to encode!

No, these are planned shutdowns which happen evert 12 months. The two chemical plants where I subcontract run 24/7 - 7 days a week for about 48 weeks of the year. July and August is when all the big jobs are done, which cannot normally be done due to the fact that the plants run most of the time.

I've done a fair number of these - Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 10
The one free program that does them all is AOMEI Partition Assistant - I've used others and had a few failures (failure to copy) but AOMEI hasn't failed yet.
You've obviously found the same program works for you.
There is an option in Partition Assistant to make a bootable USB stick - if you use that option, you don't even need to install the program on the source machine. Just boot off the USB, and attach the SSD with a USB to SATA cable to clone to.
Like all your videos - thanks.

STUBBORNNESS! i know when to do whats easier. Cloned said HD and then Formatted it to eraseverything on that. worked like a charm, was ready to take sledge hammer to it. can you say

I've built/repaired computer for a while as well and it seems to me that the most likely part of a PC to fail is the hard drive.
Re-installing Windows doesn't take too much time but installing the updates, then all your software, then re-configuring it all just how you like it. WOW this takes a seriously, seriously long time.
For someone like yourself with a very busy schedule the absolute last thing you need is to spend an afternoon and half an evening getting Windows back up and running. nice video. thanks.

It is why I made a image of my PC.
I put that image on a partition, made another partition with clonezilla.
Made it so that as a soon as I start clonezilla I can restore the image back to my SSD.
Kinda like how OEMs had those recovery partitions.

Reinstalling windows is not the problem, if you have the install disk. Originally, I was on windows 7 professional and got the free upgrade to windows 10, so getting windows working again would be a big problem for me. Also, the other programs that I use that would cause big problems as many of them were purchased as digital products (with no re-install disks). Re-installing all the programs that I use on a daily basis would take a very long time, even then I'm not sure where the product keys are for most of them. With this program I can set it up, then go and do some filming in the garage or go to work- I don't sit here and wait till the cloning process is finished. Thanks for the comment

that's why I hate windows. when i found out how easy this was on a mac the extra cost of a mac is nothing compared the time savings you will get over the life if your machine.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks, that will be useful, but its the other programs that I use that will cause the biggest problems, which is why I just clone the hard drive. I've been lucky with hard drives/SSD's and never had one fail yet.

I've used this program for quite sometime now and it saves a lot of time from reinstalling all your programs, call it restoring your system the way it was when it worked well the first time. It's especially great for cloning your hard drive to any size hard drive you choose weather it's small or big as long as your total data can fit (but who's going to go to a smaller drive anyway). My experience with this software is most satisfying and I use it with all my systems, it's a life saver and you really won't be dissatisfied with it

Finally I have the job done with this software (AOMEI Backupper). Paid $45 and they give you a license to clone twice. I have my new ssd running with every app I had on my old HDD. with this software you are going to be able to clone only the C partition. My old C partition was 1TB with only 250 gb used, my new ssd have 500 gb. Not problem at all.

I like this video. But for me the best way to ensure a successful clone without any errors would be to create a bootable usb media within AOMEI, and clone it "offline". this way the drive is not active and no background programs are running i.e. putting additional read/writes to the drive as it is being cloned. But this is a useful method for people who are new to system backups.

I used to use a 2 TB Western Digital Blue HDD, but I've since upgraded to a Western Blue 2 TB NVME SSD. Never looked back since then, because in Windows 10, an SSD makes the whole system a lot faster and snappier.

Best and easiest software / tutorial for cloning.
If you using a new drive you have to go into disk management and make sure Windows detects it or can see new drive. After the cloning process is complete and if Windows does not vote then you have to change the boot order by going into the BIOS and selecting your new drive remember that is only if the computer or laptop does not boot.

Not sure, it is a while since I last used it.
A few people have said that you need to pay for it now, but some people have also said that you do not (providing you follow the instructions in the video)
It's a free download, so I would download it and see, if you have to buy it- perhaps you can find a better alternative, but you have nothing to lose.
Best of luck with it ;-)

AOMEI Backupper website says the free version will clone a small SSD to a larger SSD. The free version will not do that. It just makes a small partition on the larger SSD. We call that bate and switch. I spent several days working on this and found “MACRIUM REFLECT 7” free version is way more capable than AOMEI Backupper. MACRIUM REFLECT 7 Got that job done. AOMEI Backupper is a waste of time. Highly recommend MACRIUM REFLECT 7 and it's free. So there.

TIP : the *freeware* version of AOMEI Backupper works great to clone a disk easily, BUT ironically the *trial* version of the Pro version does not allow cloning. I do not get the logic, but it might be useful to know the freeware does work. I initially tried the trial pro, and then tried the freeware which was great and I am really happy with the result.

EDIT: the small extra partition of only about 1GB I thought it created, it turns out, is just a Windows 10 partition (recovery) that was already there (on the source drive), but was given a drive letter during the cloning process. It therefore should not be deleted and you simply can remove the drive letter (only the letter) from that "Primary Partition" (just makes your day-to-day interface less cluttered). I had initially just made it Drive Z and waited to see what it was before deleting it :P

    • @ultimatehandyman

Yes, it depends which software you use.
Years ago I used to use Norton ghost, which was more of a DOS based program. It used to be impossible to clone from the hard drive that has your operating system on, as you were using that drive to run the software, but now you can run the software and clone from the same drive, with some programs.

Really useful video especially in the recommendation of the free AOMEI software which is easy to use and works a treat. Guided by this video, I cloned a 1Tb HDD to a 240Gb SSD with no problems. While this is a long term solution which is reliable, people also should try and use windows back up to automatically copy folders onto a secondary drive. Granted you wont be able to clone windows, however you will still get to have the recent versions of a folder/document. Always worth having multiple back ups.

Now I'm trying AOMEI to clone another flash drive to another. It starts the transfer process and loads to 10% relatively quickly and then just hangs up there continuing to load with no progress. It's also worth noting that a SATA to USB cable like the one he showed in the video won't work for a 3.5" drive as they require more power than two USB ports can provide.

Question when you clone a hard drive [1} to another hard drive {2} will all the programs work on {2} work ? For example HD {1} has Sony Vegas on it. If I were to clone this to HD {2} will it work or do I have to reinstall it from the disk ? My intention is to copy the whole HD to a new SSD . Then erase the the old HD and reuse it for extra storage.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, that will work perfectly, as long as it's going in the same computer. What you cannot do is clone the hard drive and put it in a different computer, as all the software will flag up as being counterfeit.
I have used this a few times, to upgrade from HDD to SSD and it has always worked perfectly. Just clone {1} to {2} then install {2} in the computer and check it is working 100% then you can delete the info on {1} and use it for storage. Personally I always keep a cloned clone of my computers HDD or SSD and keep it in a data safe- just in case the drive ever fails.

I tend to backup daily so although this is an excellent method it's a bit cumbersome for regular backups. I use rsync to backup daily over a secure connection then my backup is always current. For Windows the excellent delta copy is brilliant for this, but the whole drive clone is great for replacing an hard drive and you can expand the file system if the new drive is larger.

It wasn't really hard to clone a drive years ago.
Programs like clonezilla or Norton ghost worked wonders.
I remember using Norton Ghost 8.2s bootable environment quite often for work.
Shame norton got rid of it in their newer versions
I recommend people run the following command in command prompt after a clone.
    chkdsk X: /B
Replace X: forthe driver letter for the newly cloned drive.
The /B switch rescans for bad sectors as when you clone you copy the badsector file that is on the NTFS filesystem.
Doing so reset the bad sector file so their are 0 bad sectors according to the file system.

I have tried several HD cloning software but disappointed at most of them.
I had been using Acronis True Image. It seemed to work fine until my computer power supply went out and took out the motherboard.
My tower computer has several removable racks so I can clone to one of 3 drives in rotation.
After I had my new computer built with a new motherboard, processor, RAM and 4 gig video
card I decided to clone it.
After the cloning process was finished the monitor was flashing off and on twice a second. I found out that Acronis had trashed both the cloned disk and my drive “C”.
I had used the FREE program called AOMEI Backer-up. This was before my computer died.
After building my new computer I decided to buy the Pro version of AOMEI and use it.
When I cloned my drive “C” the cloned drive would not boot up. The operating system, Windows 10 Pro would not boot up.
Several engineer friends told me they use a stand-a-lone device called “Wavlink”. On their suggestions I purchased it. I have removable hard drives so I had to take the hard drives out of the mobile racks and put them into the Wavlink. My drive “C” is a 512gig drive which only has my programs on it. All my data is kept separate on two, two terabytes drives.
The time it takes to clone my drive “C” takes about 20 minutes. The Wavlink really is worth the $35.

What if the disk with the os is bigger than what the disk it's moving to is

That won't work. If you have a 10 litre bucket full of water, you can't pour all the water into a 5 litre bucket.
      Thanks for the comment 👍

Not sure about that, I’ve used it plenty of times with windows 10 though.

You have no idea how much this comment means to me. I've had several people recently saying they downloaded the program and "it's no longer free"!
I was going to delete the program from my computer and download the latest version, to see if it was still free!
You have saved me a job there 👍
