For many, the term “POD” in association with Line 6 and guitar tones conjures an image of a burgundy, kidney bean-shaped amp modeler whose sounds were deployed throughout the late-1990s and early aughts, with metal acts like Fear Factory and Godflesh being among the earliest pro-tier adopters. In the three decades following the POD’s debut, an explosive growth in technological advancement has made tone crafting, amp simulation, and numerous forms of emulation more realistic and malleable than ever, going head-to-head with countless analog amps. Now, the POD Express has emerged in a bid to take up the mantle of the guitar - and bass - world’s go-to, pedalboard-friendly amp pedal and effects processor. Sweetwater 6-string scion Nick Bowcott tests the mettle of the Line 6 POD Express to determine whether this voltaic stompbox has inherited the firepower of its innovative predecessor. Tune in to find out!

I love country music when i was kid i love songs like cole swindell stereotype ❤❤🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🌟🌟🎸🎸🌞🌞❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🌟🎸❤️Thank you guys you are an amazing artists really i love USA and sweetwater ❤❤🌟🌟🌟🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🌞❤️❤️🎸🎸🎸🌟🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸My name is mahdi and im 22 years old and i live in italy im a guitarist and you are my guitar hero Don carr really i hope this 2024 my dreams it comes true to play guitar with you its my dream and meet you and be your friend and play guitar with you its my dream ❤❤❤and meet the amazing guys of sweetwater 🇺🇸🇺🇸🌟🌟🎸🎸❤️❤️🌞🌞🌞My name is mahdi and 😊😊😊
I did have a POD bean. It was great, but useless for performing as it had no footswitch built in. This new one addresses that issue. I have already recommended it to one of my band members, and might even grab one for myself at some point as a backup for my Helix, or just for practicing away from home. Amazing that you can get HX quality effects in a $180 package.
Just got one , Thanks!!
Thanks for confirming that POD Express is compatible for both right and left hand players. 😀
Whew!
That's why all the jacks are top-mounted.
😇😂😂
It seems like we're in a golden age of affordable guitar gear that sounds great.
Except when you want great sounding analog stuff it’s not affordable 😂
Yep, anyone can dial up a tone with a few hundred bucks worth of gear these days that would have cost 10 grand in the 80s, and there's an infinite variety of tutorials online now, there's never been a better time to learn!
Affordable? Lol no. You can get a whole used hd500x for less on reverb right now. Basically a helix and even has mic processing. If you don’t have an hd500x trust me you won’t regret it. Prior to helix, the 500x was used by numerous touring musicians. Most of the technology is the same as the helix.
Agreed. I just pre-ordered one
This is as much modeling as is needed for most players.
It's a simple but versatile design. The sounds are totally professional level.
Moving towards simpler gear and less gear is good because you'll have to play more.
Seriously. The simplicity is so appealing, makes me wanna sell my Stomp and rock this.
Totally agree
Finally, a POD that's actually controlled like a POD. It's been 20 years since there was a POD this simple.
I have and still use both the POD 2.0 as well as the Bass Pod and Floorboard controller. Only use em in my home for recording, never used em live. This new one has my interest peaked.
Based on the limited information so far available on these, you CAN disable the cab emulation and use them with an amp, and you can plug in a footswitch or expression pedal for additional control. Having watched a few demos, I'm now most interested to see/hear more about those features.
I came very close to buying an old POD second-hand a few months ago. I'm glad I held out.
EDIT. I found the manual online:
* "If connecting to an amp (or to a powered speaker that offers speaker cab simulation) you may want to set your POD Express’ Cab to “Off”-press and hold the ALT buttons and the TAP switch while turning the AMP encoder to ."
* Enter the “Global Settings” and choose the corresponding “Assign” parameter for the ON (FS1), TAP (FS2), FS3, or FS4 footswitches to independently select the desired function.
• Set any footswitch to switch the assigned parameter as On/Off.
• A footswitch connected as FS3 or FS4 can also be assigned to control TAP Tempo or function as a Next or Previous Preset switch.
Thanks for the info. This is perfect for my travel rig. I can run this with the IR off into my Seymour Duncan Powerstage 200 and plug into the backline cab where ever I go. And I can fit ALL of it in my guitar case. WIN!!!
This is a great idea, and a throwback to the original units. This will end up on a lot of recordings.
The value of this is insane. Line 6 does it again 👍
I was impressed with how simple yet complex the UI is
Amazing sounds and features, at a very affordable price. What a great way to get started using Modelers and the advantages they have over other gear. Wonderful tour and demo video. Thanks!
Nick's playing always puts me in the mood for Def Leppard concert videos. (:
Or maybe Grim Reaper concert videos?
Wow, killer Pantera riff at 1:50🤘
I was an early adopter of the old kidney bean. It was a terrific piece of gear (still have but the power supply croaked). Still use an HX Stomp for worship music and a Catalyst 60 is my backup amp.
I’m kind of jazzed about this thing
I love that preset you made...very 80's crunch sounding. I want it.
This was a great demo. I had the original Pod back in ~2000 when I bought my first electric. It was so much fun to have all those sounds to play around with while learning. This little box is amazing, thanks for the thorough review and demo of all the sounds and features. I've moved on to playing bass more exclusively and am very interested in the Bass version ... it's hard not to impluse buy for < $200!
Just got mine today from Sweetwater! Thanks Clint! Hope you’re feeling better.
Oh, this pedal is so much fun and easy to use. Get yourself one.
This is awesome I’ll defitnlry be buying one of these soon
Really nice demo. Thank you so much.
In the end, this is more than anyone needs at home plugged to a small 10 watt amp as a Spider.
Love the Dimebag decal on the lefty Strat.
Come on ...I still have with me today the first ever POD item with a massive rotary knob and the first POD Bean (stuff for collectors I guess) which were truly great in mid 90' when they came out. After some 30 years here we go again with something intriguing ....worth of a closer look :-) well done.
Excellent review, thanks!
This will sell like hot cakes.
Yes, it will sell a lot and I think they've worked miracles with the UI on such a small unit, but I'm thinking that a lot of people who buy it won't actually use it much. It would be great for a novice and I like the fact that you can turn off the amp emulation but most guitarists would have these functions covered.
No. It will not
I just ordered one yesterday. I will let you know what I think about it.
@@alicelaranjeira3127already sold out at Sweetwater in less than a day 🤷🏽♂️
Yes it will 😂
😂 Thanks 👍 for your FAB 😅 presentation , really enjoyed it. I will be getting my paws on one ASAP. Best regards. John.
Great job gents! I would have to personally try this out!
SweetWater, Nice one mate, welcome to the Southern Hemisphere of Auckland New Zealand. Yes I have the Grandma of this little beauty, had it for about 20 years, great sounds. I also had the small pocket one, but moved in on as it seemed to be a bit complicated. But the Little "Top Ten" Beauty is a stunner, great sounds, easy to use. But I doubt whether these little Beauty's will be Travelling this far to little old NZ. But you can let me know. (Oh yes, I'm 86, But still have a few years playing in me) "I Hope"
Excellent demo!
Brilliant design- great review!
Great presentation, big thanks to both of you! Included amp models are based on the Fender Princeton (best clean model in the Helix imho), the Matchless Dc30 (Vox-Style) and my personal favourite, the Friedman BE 100. For Metalheads there is a model based on the Peavey 5150. What more do you need? I think I will probably buy one😁.
Great demo covers the basics nicely thanks. In the manual an external footswitch can be set to control Delay, but it isn't clear if it can it control the looper on the Delay knob? If not this is the one drawback as looper on an external switch is a must.
Great video! Thanks! 👍😎
I had an original POD and then the POD 2.0. Also had a Flextone and later a POD XT Live. Line 6 makes great stuff, real pioneers in the amp modeling field. I don't particularly need this one for anything, BUT...I've been looking for an inexpensive solution for recording bass at home for a while now, that bass version might fit the bill perfectly for that.
This will be the equivalent of Focusrite Scarlett of guitar effects... you'll see 'em everywhere.
I would get one just to have fun and for backup purposes.
I/O options and features are awesome too.
Well done, Line 6.
Amazing, i just felt in love
It’s so full of features that I literally need to have the booklet on my side all the time! Zoom MS50G+ vs POD express and POD is a clear winner!
That looper demo was unreal 😮
I didn't get that bit at the end, what's the amp models technology based upon? old pod, HD, hx, helix, pod go?
I have an fm9 but holy do I want this thing. The nostalgia
Wow very clever design.
Absolutely love it!!!!!
Awesome Pedal- love it
Red plastic pods are back
?
@@jeancarlosbrito3809 The kidney bean!
@@jeancarlosbrito3809its a reference to the original kidney bean. Hes saying this is also red and plastic, also digital. Its not ultra funny but i totally get the joke. I hope my autistic explanation helps
I had a Flextone back in the day. I would buy this before getting a Helix.
They weren’t plastic dude 😊
Can you bypass the cabs on the right output? So left out would go to FoH and right out to a poweramp to have a cab on stage?
Hi, GrimyRen. The cab sims can’t be bypassed for just a single output. For that capability, you’d likely want to step up to something like the HX Stomp.
Thanks for your interest!

That tone at 9:48 is awesome! Don is ripping it up!
Good amp choices in this
Wow!! I need to get an electric guitar to experience this thing!!
This thing looks awesome! I can’t wait to use it with my Cole Clark Humbucker guitar.
Hi Aaron! Remember on your stream yesterday when I said I "held off" on my impulsive purchase? Well not this time! Already ordered this thing 😆
@@isaacdust Me too. Hope to have it tomorrow! If I do I’ll go live on my channel with it!
@@aaronshortmusic Ordered the bass version too 🙃 I'm on vacation from work, re-organizing my home studio. There were two empty slots for just these kinds of devices. Couldn't resist! (Also hoping to have them tomorrow). What a time to be a gear head!
Just received the pedal from Sweetwater, plugged it in and played through headphones, and I love it. These things are subjective, of course, but the sound and ease of use are so awesome (for my use case) that it’s instantly sent everything else I’ve used to record direct (e.g., Boss IR-2, DSM Simplifier, Thermion Zero) to the storage shelf. Will fire up the bass unit later his afternoon.
@@isaacdust Me too! My only wish is that I could assign the ‘on’ switch to turn on the delay and also increase the output level to use as a clean will boost with delay for solos. Otherwise it’s great!
Does it have the exact same modeling and effects as the helix?
Simple and straighforward
Too good to be true
Definitely getting one
One on the way!
Can anybody recommend a unit if the only sound I want is a deluxe reverb with tremolo?
Does anyone know if that mono out, when the cab sim is turned off, is basically a line out that can go into an FRFR?
Hello, DTension! You can run the mono out to an FRFR without a problem when the cab sim is turned off. That said, when going to an FRFR the cab sim being turned on is going to sound much better. Give us a ring and we can discuss in more depth!
Thanks for the interest!
James Masterson, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1641, james_masterson@sweetwater.com
Very simple fx but killer 🤘🏻
Ok this is pretty awesome!!! And a great price!!
I’ve been wanting a second small amp cause I have two Orange 1x8 cabs, but the problem is this has stereo outputs. I still want my pedalboard, but it complicates things cause I could run stereo in two different ways.
Question - I saw at the end of the video this could be used as an effects box without the cab sims. Could this then plug directly into an amp that doesn't have an effects loop built in - like a Tone Master, for instance - and still be usable? The pre-amp effects makes sense to me (gain, distortion), but not the typical post amp effects (chorus, reverb). Will it become a jumbled mess at some point?
Hi, mpactdesignmedia. Yes, this could be used like a standard effects pedal in front of an amp. As long as an amp is running clean, the effects loop isn’t really necessary.
Thanks for your interest!
Charlie Davis, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1320, charlie_davis@sweetwater.com
Amazing product and value !! What a brilliant design, imagine having this when you were 19 y/o, no money and taking the bus to practice; and this delivers pro quality tones, ain't no 90's Zoom pedal, LOL.
Answering your question, yes, I have an old bass POD rack that I still use every time for home recording.
It looks to me like the same effects processor that is on the YamahaTHR30ii which I have. I am looking for something to run in conjunction with my Yamaha. Anyone have any suggestions?
This is so much cooler than the hx one or stomp imo. So easy to dial in and power
Wheres the Helix 2?... Im still waiting for that one?
Sounds great and convenient and at a good price
The only thing missing other than being able to load IRs is the ability to control the effects parameters. Adding that ability like the amp eq on the other dials would make me buy it right now.
Very impressive but how easy is it to get sounds live with only 2 foot switches ?
There’s another Jack in the back where you can connect another pedal to control presets, I believe.
will sweetwater do the bass one?
Love what I'm hearing
Wondering how to vary the rate of the modulation effects - is that done with the tap tempo? Or is it only the preset value?
Hi, Nicky-T. The modulation rates can be controlled from the tap tempo footswitch, or from the Modulation control knob. When you’re under a specific effect, turning the knob further clockwise will increase the intensity of the effect.
Thanks for your interest!
Charlie Davis, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1320, charlie_davis@sweetwater.com
@@sweetwater Thanks for the answer. My confusion still remains to some extent. I would expect (and from what I hear in the demo),is for the INTENSITY to be affected by the control rotation, not the RATE. So I would expect the MIX to be affected by the rotation of the control. At any rate (lol), good to know that the rate is controllable.
Still using the original Pod, but adding a simple looper to it sounds attractive...
I love the Helix stuff, the Pod go is awesome, this new Pod Express is just as great and I will buy one, but Line 6 need to make a GOOD portable amp that sounds good. I tried the Boss and Yamaha stuff and I sent both back. I prefer using the Helix thru studio monitors.
Merci super 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nice!
I've got one question: does TAP button controll also DELAY time? What happens when you use DELAY and CHORUS simultaneously, is it possible to controll these effects independently?
Hi, jacekklimkiewicz4898. The Tap button does control the delay time as well. Both modulation and delay effects will sync to that tempo.
Thanks for your interest!
Charlie Davis, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1320, charlie_davis@sweetwater.com
Great tool
How do you get to the cab sims?
"Hold the ALT button and TAP switch and turn the AMP encoder to select a different cab model, or turn to 0 for no cab."
Yes Line 6 has done it again!! Been getting tired of lugging my trusty HD500 pedal to band rehearsals and this is just the ticket to do the job. Hate to say if you need more than this to sound good, I hear U2 is looking for a new guitarist. 😂
Are the effects better than the effects in Garage Band?
Can this go directly into an amp or just into a board/PA?
Hi, tubularbill. This can be used in front of an amp as well. If you do that, you’ll just want to turn off the amp/cab modeling.
Thanks for your interest!
Charlie Davis, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1320, charlie_davis@sweetwater.com
That looks ridiculous ! Genius.
I am so sold.
Yep. What about external IRs?
Nope this time
Ok, is it just me or does thing thing sound great!!!
And for around 180 bucks!
Wow!
Not a fan of the amp tones but I would use the effects and the stereo outs. The tuner is good too
Can this be used with an amp via the FX loop?
Hi, two_legit1832! Thanks for your question. Yes, the POD Express output can be connected to the return of an amp. As with any effect, adjust the effects and controls to obtain your desired tone. The amps and cabs can be bypassed should you want to use the unit for effects only.
Please contact us direct with other questions as you have them!
Robert Williams, Senior Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 2371, robert_williams@sweetwater.com
Thank you for demoing the tuner. For some reason I find that the better the sound I get out of a unit the worse the tuner is 😂.
Question: Can you disable the internal IR and load your own? That’s the only downside to this pedal.
Probably asking a bit much for the price range.
"The POD Express's built-in USB-C audio interface makes recording, monitoring, and re-amping child's play"
from their ad
Yes u can off the amp & cab to use traditional amp. It is between the clean and lead channel the white dot.
Can I send dry to the headphones? And wet stereo to left and right?
Hey, FransvandenBergeMuziekschuur! That’s a great question, it’s not specifically mentioned in the manual and it doesn’t look like you can independently control whether the headphone out is a wet or dry signal, but the headphone is supposed to monitor all playback if it’s used as an interface, so if you are using outputs 3 and 4 via USB to get a dry signal out, the routing on the headphone should follow the DAW.
I hope this helps!
Connor Smith, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1793, connor_smith@sweetwater.com
That would mean you can use the distortion and all that seperately from reverb, delay at that sort of things. It really is alot to ask from a lowly priced amazing do it all box at this price point. Thank you for being awesome . @@sweetwater
They should develop the POD Express Acoustic.
Pedal or preamp? Where i can put it. To combo, power amp, monitor?
Hello, martinlohr7652! Thanks for your message, appreciate your question. All of the options you mentioned are viable for the POD Express. wondering if you can just shut off the cab sims and use this thing as a preamp
Do they make a power supply for this.. Or one that will work with it..
Hey there! Great question. This pedal just requires a standard 9v power supply, so you don’t need anything fancy to power this one.
Gator makes one of my favorites on the market!

It’s as if they’ve taken the drive and effects section off their Spider series amps and put it in a pedal. I’ve never been a fan of these knobs that turn through effects. The storage slots might make a difference though.
Amazing presentation guys! Only thing it's missing is an AUX Input.
Agreed. The only huge miss imo. An xlr output would’ve been great too.
You might be able to play through the usb as an aux
Can you recommend this for Live gigs?
Hi, jonathancalimpitan524! Thanks for your message, hope you’re well and safe. From a sound quality perspective, the POD Express is from the same family as the Helix and HX products. Great sound for studio or live. As far as your needs in live situation, I can’t tell via your question if you need multiple presets, to turn on and off effects, etc. Those functions require external switching, still doable however not as easy as the more sophisticated products.

Can you get a good acoustic guitar sound from the clean channel?
Hi, AckoustixBand! Thanks for your question. In my opinion, yes! While there are no acoustic specific algorithms in the PODExpress, there are several effect options to help shape your sound.

Sixty Cycle Hum showed this great toy and now these guys have a video. Do I need one? No. Do I want one? Yes.
But still no XLR out?? Why??
Take a DI-Box, boom, XLR Out you have. It's not that hard! 🙂
I rather have stereo outs than an XLR - gotta make sure the footprint works out, and XLRs are huge.
It might be good to compensate for the lack of DSP capacity of HX Stomp. No, I can use only this lol.
