Now I'm thinking of returning in August some time if the weather is good and watch the Perseid meteor shower from the area.

Cool shots with the drone! What a beautiful place! I will have to visit it sometime. Hope you are staying safe wherever you happen to be!

If you have a truck there are a ton of off roading trails with camp sites here and there and streams here and there. It's a lot of land and not even that busy. Sure beats national parks anyday especially with the Cloud Peak Wilderness to the south. Beautiful scenery. The road from the east from the town of Big Horn is a fun little drive up.

You are making my summer bright. I am sheltering in place. Your videos show places that I have passed by in the past but had no time to stop, since I was on my way to somewhere. And to think, you hauled that drone up there with you. Great drone views. Too bad hikers can't overnight in the tower.

I considered hiking up towards sunset for the views but felt lazy. I wish I did though. I've been thinking about how to get a job up at that tower. I'd love to live up there a month. I can't imagine how many great time lapse videos I'd get! I would need a solar panel and battery up there but I could easily spend that month up there. The weird part would be all the visitors coming by each day but at night it would be such amazing solitutde.

Looks like an awesome place to explore, thanks for sharing this adventure! Will definitely file that away in places to visit sometime in the near future.

You'd love it. There are so many off road trails and dispersed camping everywhere and just so much land. The only down side is no trash unless you pay to stay at one of the established camp grounds but other than that there's water to filter so bring food and you could stay for a while. There is no cell service away from the edges of the forest along Red Grade Road so download some maps prior to going.

@@JayWandersOut That definitely sounds like my kind of place. I have a collection of Benchmark atlases that I have in case I don't have a cell signal, so I'm good on maps and to be honest...call me old school but there's just something about holding a physical map in your hands. I think I got one for Wyoming, if I do I'll have to highlight this fire watch tower. I was also looking on Google earth, a little further south in that same mountain range it picks up a lot of elevation with peaks topping out at around 13,000ft. Did you explore any of the higher summits before you headed over to Yellowstone?

I really wanted to summit Cloud Peak but at the time I felt it was a little early in the year and my body wasn't ready for that type of elevation yet. To get to that southern area you have to drive a big loop around from where I was so I didn't think I'd do it unless it was on my way back east. I'd love to go back though. The area between rt 16 and Red Grade Road is largely wilderness area and seems beautiful. Someday.

Enjoying your footage of the Bighorns! How long was the drive on dirt up there to the trailhead?

From Forest Rt 16 it's only .86 miles with 277ft of elevation gain. Not bad. It's just really rough road. Rt 16 is also dirt road though but crushed gravel and easy for any car to drive.
