    It has made me feel good to see a younger generation following in the footsteps we left 40-50 years ago. I was involved in the exploration and mapping of Tres Charros in the '70s and you will see me mentioned in Caves of Wyoming and on the accompanying maps. Electronic surveying seems to go faster than when we were using brunton compasses, cloth tapes, and carbide lights. Most of the cavers of that time are still around but we are in our 60s and 70s and are mostly armchair cavers now.
    "Though your survey teams forsake you and your stations wash away, keep your eye upon life's purpose and try to map a mile a day."

      Hey George. I caved back in the early 90s with a guy that also mapped some of the caves for the Caves of Wyoming book. He was with a grotto out of Laramie at the time and into NOLS bigtime, DC Carr. Like you, I am thoroughly enjoying these videos of these young and agile cavers. I still have my carbide light, just for nostalgia’s sake.

    This video work is incredible. Am I correct in seeing that most of this was taken with only the headlamps of the people in frame turned on? It looks spectacular. And am I to believe that you took this video while also sketching?! Let's see some sketch pages! Great work. I'm so impressed.

      Yes... I didn't use any external lighting - only caver's headlamps. Experimenting with this approach to give a darker but maybe more realistic view of what caves are like. I was doing profile sketch, which allows me a little more free time to capture video. Dan had the more demanding task of plan sketch.

    Hi Derek I really appreciate the vids. There are so few people who post videos for serious cavers even if I'm only an armchair caver now. It would be nice if you would tone down the background music a bit I like hearing the cave banter so it feels like I've gone caving with you and not just watched a presentation. I'll never get to Colorado and certainly never get on a rope again but I still want to know about the caves. For some odd reason I "need" to know about every cave so some more narration would be good. How much survey did you get? More than the original half mile? At one point you lost the stream. Did it sump, disappear down a tight drain, or under a breakdown pile? Was there a high bypass? Is that what you were pushing when you lost the stream? Is there still potential or did it crap out. Is there a resurgence? Just a spring or an entrance and how far away. Inquiring minds want to know lol. BTW I'm really strangely jealous you got to go Left of the Trap.

      Thanks Steve! If you want to know more details about the cave then you'll need to get out of that armchair and come survey with us.

      @@DerekBristol Hmm, thoughts of that versus the mini?

    • @DerekBristol
      @DerekBristol  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pbalister I have both. Pro has a better camera and better range, but at a higher cost and greater weight/size. The Mini is great if you don't need to fly far and want something easy to carry with you - I've been using it for filming while backpacking. I also wouldn't be as heart-broken if I lost or crashed the Mini.
