You should seriously consider writing a book just on this topic alone !! Thanks for the great tips and observation while on a long trek.

I packed out a short stack of pancakes once. Pizza, definitely. What a great array of suggestions. I had a hard time with processed foods, I’m old, like Knorr and mountain house, but kept up with nuts, dried fruit and jerky. I also did the cold cereal with powdered mild or without, just as a snack.

Good video! Enzyme mtor causes body to repair and rebuild itself. Literature reads mtor turned on with 30 grams protein or more at one meal. Best to save protein above 50 grams for next meal.
Maddie's TH-cam short on "What I eat in a day hiking AT" does not list total protein in meal. Other beneficial nutrition is omega-3 fat to reduce inflammation and soreness. Thru-hikers tested most deficient in alkaline calcium after thru hike at Katadin, Maine. Etc.
Suggest off-trail training to include total protein in each meal to increase awareness for protein in food while hiking. Eating two 50 gram protein meals per day turns on mtor gave surprisingly good results of increased body strength, muscle mass, and endurance giving symptoms of more reps during pre-hike physical training. Long distance hiking aches and pain reduced by turning on mtor body repair mechanism.

I understand the freeze dried back packer meals are very pricey and get boring I really admire how you used the quick shopping along the way and kept it affordable and mixed it up ❤❤ . If you ever decide to do it , you are going to be the absolute best mom and or Girl Scout leader !! Keep em coming Maddie 😍

I remember when pita pockets were a thing. Haven't seen them for a long long time but they would be great for the chicken packets.

Kencko makes those smoothies. They are expensive though and I found them at Walmart. I get them occasionally for a treat.

When I was a kid we just took powdered milk to eat with the mac and cheese. Now if I take it camping I take the easy mac that comes in pouches that just need water. In terms of cheese, the laughing cow doesn't need refrigeration so it will last longer- good on bagels. If you have a group, a few pouches of tuna or chicken and a box of tuna or chicken helper works. I've found pouches of hamburger meat too.

Yeah I like savory spicy trail mix, not that sweet stuff. I notice there is more sweet out there, the sweets are something I would not want on a hike, on occasion.

I've done so much backpacking that I can't eat dehydrated food anymore. Portable fresh food is best whenever possible. Freeze dried backpacking meals are the absolute worst.

You Americans need to discover oatcakes. They're ideal for a lunch on the go.

When you were on the AT, I was newly diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that requires me to be gluten-free. I've gotten a lot better at eating GF since then, but I feel like I'd have a difficult time getting enough food on trail. My main "bread" now is delicious fresh corn tortillas. Most GF bread products are trash: dry, crumbly, and tasteless. They would not be worth carrying. I guess one could carry Masa!
I wonder if there are any GF through-hikers out there....How do you get enough to eat? I'd love to know!
    Be well, Maddie!

@@mizotter buckwheat is mostly eaten in Russia and is gluten free, cook like rice. Always bring a pound of walnuts or mixed nuts, calorie dense food, I add raisins to my mixed nuts for natural sugars for energy.

I love food. My favorite breakfast us milk & cereal, divide a box of cereal into 6-7 freezer bags, add 1/4 cup Nido (powdered cream), add water, shake, instant milk & cereal, can add coconut flakes, raisins to cereal. I buy several of those 2.5oz bacon pieces packets and add it to Ramen or 3 packets grits or 3/4 cup instant mash potatoes. Peanut Butter & Salami on a Bagel.or tortilla is good. Can carry a steak or sausage or hot dogs for first day to cook over a fire. Usually bring a pound of Walnuts, calorie dense @3000/lb, mostly fat & protein. Only Red Lentils cook in 5 minutes, ratio 2.5:1 water:Red Lentils, ex: 1/2 cup Red Lentils + 10oz water + salt/seasoning, boil 5 minutes, let rest 5 minutes, ready to eat
