I have the following: 10-18mm F4 / 18-105mm F4 / 70-200mm F4 / 50mm F1.8. I agree with you, the 18-105mm is the one I use the most by far. It is such a great lens for shooting in a wide variety of situations. The other lenses I have are great too but only in the right situation. I take mainly still images but I still like having constant F4 so that I do not have to compromise on my settings because I want to zoom in.
All people talk about the crazy sharpness they can have with crazy lens.... But for the moment I have only the kit lens (16-50) and it's an awesome lens, I took some crazy photos with ! But I think I will be the 18-105mm because it's more versatile than the kit lens. And I you think it's more sharp than the kit lens, it will be perfect ! Thank you again for your video, big thumb up from france ;)
People definitely don’t give the kit lens enough credit. It’s still a good lens. I think this 18-105 is the perfect upgrade though. For a bit more versatility and a bit better quality! Thanks for watching and greetings from Canada!
The kit lens is fantastic - its ridiculously small and light, performs well, has OSS, and takes outstanding pictures. Its the poster child for what the APS-C is supposed to be. Love your kit lens that's why its the kit lens.
My budget was pretty tight when I bought my a7iii so this was the first lens I bought. Love the variety I get from this lens. I think it’s a solid choice and will hold me off for a while.
That’s great! I’ve been thinking about an a7iii but would probably have to live with my apsc lenses for a while, so it’s good to hear they do the trick!
I own the 18-105 and the 50 f1.8 as well as a few vintage lenses (a Minolta 135 f/2.8 Rokkor and a Helios 58 f/2). I use the 18-105 almost all the time, unless I’m taking portraits or I’m in low light. It’s a great lens especially for the A6300 because of the OSS.
It's hard to believe that I still didn't find any lens with constant or fixed aperture that provides that much of a focal length range. This lens may be more than six years old now, but boy this is my all time favourite lens. Once I've seen any brand come up with similar product like this Sony lens, I definitely wouldn't bother selling it.
I voted big time with my dollars to have this lens. It, like your situation, is on my camera 80% of the time. I had alpha mount cameras and lenses. I really like my alpha mount Sony 16-50 f2.8 and Sigma 70-200 f2.8 (my favorite lens overall) but the gap between 50mm and 70mm seemed to be what I needed very often. The closest thing to this 18-105 in the alpha mount just didn't work for me. So I ended up selling most of my alpha mount lenses and two camera bodies to switch to an a6500 and a set of e mount lenses earlier this year. I still have an alpha mount Sony A77 and the 16-50 and 70-200. Those lenses didn't work well on the e mount adapter. But after the dust settled I'm so pleased with the a6500 and the 18-105. Yes the 18-105 isn't as sharp as the wonderful other lenses, but it's sharp enough for me and I'm fussy about sharpness. The range is great and if I want to I can use Clear Image Zoom to extend the range. I'm not big into video and people say the powered zoom is for video. I use the power zoom a lot to frame still shots. It zooms silently. It isn't too heavy. I really like this lens. I wish it was an f2.8 but it would likely be much larger and way more expensive. I have the 16-50 kit lens too and use it regularly. It isn't the greatest lens but it is so small it turns my a6500 into a convenient pocket camera. Again with Clear Image Zoom I can get out to 100mm with it. My f2.8 20mm was probably a waste of money. I bought it as a pancake but it isn't that much smaller than the kit lens. The sharpest lens I have is the f1.8 35mm but it is too limiting for most run and gun days, although it is great for indoor shots where there is movement in the subject like indoor sports.
Unless you’re shooting in a studio, your work is being blown up on a giant screen (at high res) or you need to shoot with a giant aperture, it rarely makes sense to lug around a set of primes these days. You’re probably just making your life more difficult. Camera sensors are so sensitive and zooms have become pretty sharp.
Oh look, I'm back here. Contemplating swapping out my 16-55 f/2.8 for this lens. Why? Because the added reach (almost double) is becoming more of a thing as I'm getting more into sports photography / videography (disc golf, mostly). Thanks, Dunna, you're a continuing source of knowledge for so many of us.
Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 by far the best lens I have ever paired with the a6500. With the mc-11 adapter that sigma has made specifically for it, you usually get about 90% auto focus speed compared to a native lens, which in my opinion is fantastic. Also can’t beat the 1.8 bokeh compared to the f/4
I would agree with having the sigma 18-35 but that setup is so big I only use it to record video for youtube in my office. I rather the Sony 35 1.8 or the sigma 30 for there size and sharpness. Plus I find that the adapter drains battery when the camera is off
The Broke Consumer it’s nothing compared to a Canon 1DMX1 w/ 24-70 on it, with Sony we are being spoiled already. Also, being able to punch in and out is incredibly crucial and I have found that in my experience it can be the difference between a great shot and an okay shot. And I use a grip on my camera so battery isn’t such an issue to me.
got this lens as my first (except the kit), been using it ever since most of the time for nearly everything. always my lens recommendation to anyone ask me which lens to buy for sony aps-c
I was thinking about going with the sigma 16 f1.4 for my first lens other than my kit lens. But now I kinda want the zoom capability, what’s the difference in quality between the sigma and this 18-105?
I’d probably prefer the 18-135 over this one for the smaller size, less weight, and wider range. Did try the 18-105 in store though, quality is definitely top notch!
I bought this lens 6 months ago. Compared to the kit lens, 20mm f2, 35mm f1.8 or even the 55-210, this lens took a little bit to get used to because of the extra size and weight. On a recent NYC trip, I debated whether to take this lens or the kit lens but at the end, I took the 18-105 with me and I am glad that I did. The extra reach and flexibility allowed me to get some great shots. The f4 performed okay when the sun went down so I typically switched to the 35mm f1.8. A major gripe for me was that the lens is so big that it would cast a shadow on my subject whenever I used flash. In several back lit situations, those shots were severely hampered by it. Aside from that, this is a great lens. Even though I don't shoot video, I appreciated the constant aperture and the non-extendable barrel. I haven't tried the 18-135 but if that has different trade-offs as well.
I always tell people when they are picking out lenses to think what they would use them for, what situations, how close is the subject, is it large or small, etc. For example, how useful is a long range telephoto in close quarters. Or, how useful is a super wide angle at a baseball game. Sure, arguably you still could get interesting photos depending what shot you’re going for. I heard one photographer once say, “zoom lenses for day, fixed primes for night,” and i always thought that was a fairly solid idea. I find myself in so many situations always thinking “DAMN, if only I had one more stop of light!” So I tend to lean towards primes, haha.
My priority list of lenses for video: 1 - zoom lens (Sony 18-105mm f4) 2 - fixed “art” lens (Sigma 30mm f1.4) 3 - wide-angle (Rokinon 12mm f2.0 or Sony 10-18mm f4 if you can afford it)
I have #2 and #3. But I don't have #1... Do you think it's worth trading sony 1018 to sony 18-105? I'm looking for a lens that I can take for my trip to London.
This has always been my most wanted lens since I got my a6000 and watching this vid hasn't helped that...lol. Great info as always. Hope the van situation got fixed.
Man, you helped me BIG TIME with your words about extension and rebalancing the gimbal. I watched so many videos but you were the only one paying attention to this! Thank you so much!
Your videos have all the answers for my questions, right on point. Really happy to find your channel, it's fun, easy to watch and so INFORMATIVE. You deserve a lot bigger audience
Hi Dunna, thanks for creating this video for us! You also used a lot of movement and titles and video examples in this video so it was entertaining and informative at the same time, amazing job done here! And I have to say I truly appreciate all the lenghts you went to to show the strengths and weaknesses of the lens, use cases and comparisons. Most TH-camrs just state the obvious facts that everyone knows, but you introduced new aspects, gave your honest opinion and convinced me of the quality of this lens! I will definitely buy the 18-105 now! Keep going with your videos, I'm sure many people also appreciate the time and effort you put into these high quality videos and more and more people will come to your channel right for that!
Wow thank you for those kind words! I’m so glad that you enjoy my videos and find them helpful! Thanks for asking a question!! When you get around to picking up the lens I hope you really enjoy it!
Well I also have this one in my ‘lineup‘ but I was a bit disappointed of its still image quality. If there’s only one lens I can carry for my aps-c, I would say it’s Sigma 16mm f1.4 Thanks for sharing the video. Your videos have always been informative & fun!
I use the Sony 18-135mm most of the time. It's only flaw in my opinion is low light shooting but I don't really take that many photos where there's not enough light.
That's a tough one... I have owned this lens for at least a couple of years now and it has been pretty superb for me. Recently used it to shoot a wedding video and to take pictures of the guests at the wedding. While I had my Sigma 16mm lens with me, I wasn't tempted to use it. I always get consistent good results with the lens to be honest. Would be good if Sony released a f2.8 constant aperture version of this lens. I would be snapping it up asap.... Thanks for the great video as well....
This is a fantastic lens I use this on my Sony a 7R2 for not only video but I also get 18 megapixel sized images for photography so it’s really very versatile. Nice review,)
Dunna Did It I mostly use it walking for photos. Great at Sporting events (MLB baseball) when I need up close shots of family, zoomed in shots of players, and wide angle shots of the stadium
I couldn’t agree more with the title! The 18-105mm f4 G is permanently mounted on my a6000. I am shooting 90% of the time in urban environments (street photography and cityscapes) and the versatility of this lens lefts nothing to be desired. It ticks all the three of my must have boxes: build quality, fast and accurate focus mechanism and constant aperture. And a tip: the image quality can be superb at infinity only by MF. I thought that this lens was pretty soft for far subjects (like landscapes or cityscapes) but after some experimentation with MF I managed to shoot images that rivals my other Zeiss prime lenses! While for closer focus distances or portraits the AF is 100% accurate, to infinity struggles heavily and this is maybe a reason for the inconsistent score on various reviews in terms of sharpness. But, no, this lens is very sharp if you can achieve correct focus (I have very high keeper rate with MF, is very smooth in this lens).
It's the best lens for Sony APS-C when paired with a gimball and a6500 (see my chatuchak weekend market video). Zooming happens within the lens so you don't need to worry about the gimball not being balanced. The only downside is low light performance, so in evening I recommend you switch to 35mm f1.8
I just recently purchased this lens used for cheap. I needed this as main lens for events. If ever I needed b-roll, I can just quickly change into my Sigma 30mm 1.4 or 50mm. But for most shots, this thing does a great job. Love the review! Binge watching right now. 😎
I just purchased an a6500 and 3 lenses. I expect the 18-105mm will be on the camera most of the time. I switched from a Canon 6d and the 24-105mm lens is what I used on it most of the time.
@@dunnadidit I also got the 55-210mm, the Sony 50mm f/1.8 and the kit lens for pocket carrying. Will probably buy a 12mm too. BTW thanks for the video!
For the Sony a6000 series I would happy with a faster version of the kit lens, say a 16-70 f2.8. I know there is the Zeiss 16-70 f4 but the reviews on that are very iffy plus it costs almost $1000. Surely someone can do better? (I'd even settle for a 16-50 or 16-55 f2.8). [edit] I should say that the small form factor is a big deal for me, which is my main objection to the 18-105. Plus I prefer wider at the low end than long reach.
I hear you 100%. I wouldn’t hold your breath though. I would even love to see a bit of a less expensive 16-35 f2.8. The only one is the master and it’s like $3000(CAD) and it’s a big lens! I’m going to be doing a comparison between the 16-70 and the 18-105 soon. The 16-70 is nice and small but I hear what you’re saying about the reviews. It’s not the sharpest lens for sure (still better than the kit lens though I suppose).
sony zies 16-70, rocks. Buy it on special or from a second hand exchange. I bought it on special (30% off xmas deal) I'm stoked with it... I also have the sony 90mmG so know that level of sharpness. The 16-70, being less sharp than the 90 et al (marginally), gives a slight softness that I like. I bought the 90 for portraits, and macro of course, but for portraits I'll often switch to the zies. So per the video, if I had only one choice I'd sell the gear for heroin.

Your wishes have been heard. There is the amazing 16-55 mm F2.8 G lens.
I picked one up for $300 used. It was obviously used lens. Cosmetic wear. It is not the prettiest lens. The optics however, were nice and perfect clean. There was one issue with the lens and i thought it was a good trade off instead of paying $600. The lens for some odd reason will not take focused pictures and under f5.6 That means f4-4.6 are useless. The pictures are slightly out of focus and i dont understand why but as long as i go 5.6 and higher, the shots are crispy. Sometimes i feel like i made a mistake but then i really doubt i would be taking photos at f4 anyways. I take most of my photos at f8 with this lens.
"Does that zoom exist?" YES.... Olympus 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro; razor sharp from corner to corner across the entire focal range. It's also got the best image stabilization of any lens and gets insanely good stabilization when paired with an E-M1 iii for Sync-IS. Too bad people downplay M43 though....
Oh yeah it's massive! Even more on an apsc body.. But til i really love having 24 / 35 / 50 / 70 prime Lens quality in one Lens, i don't know what to get.. Of course for TH-cam talking stuff it's too much, but for client work for events / weddings it's an insane Lens to have i guess!
I love my 24-240mm F3.5-6.3. I can shoot anything. From landscape, street, events, weddings, paparrazi... to wildlife. It's awesome. It's sharp and AF is quick.
I was looking at getting the A6400 and foregoing the kit lens and get this for general photography and then some Sigma primes for video. I have the 18-135mm for my Canon but the f/5.6 at the end kills me sometimes when it starts to get darker just after sunset.
I really wanted the Sony E 16-55mm 2.8 G for the amazing quality that it produces, it’s the price that is as you said, “arm and a leg.” I’m looking to have this as a versatile travel lense for travels, some landscape. Would you recommend this for landscape photography?
@@dunnadidit I meant to ask if the 18-105 would be a good choice/alternative. I've seen some vloggers use it for their travel, just wanted to see if it's good for landscapes as well. I also have a sigma 1.4 16mm as my secondary lense. Just putting it out there, love the channel it's always the go to when I need some photography questions answered thanks for that!
I have been nothing but happy since I bought this lens. I will say this though: I also like the Zeiss 16-70 as a nice alternative to this lens. You lose a little range, and the power zoom... but for a quick run and gun zoom, I like the sharpness of the Zeiss lens a little better. Having said that, if you’re using a gimbal and you need the ability to zoom while running, this 18-105 is a must have. Nice review man.
Agree, I have had this lens for a couple years and it is my walk about lens. At f4 it is not a great event lens as auto focus will hunt in low light. If you have had this lens for a bit, there is a lens firmware update that seemed to me to improve it performance on the a6500 that I shoot with.
I was in a dilemma on whether to purchase this lens or some of the other options. The answer to all the questions that I had in my mind just poired in. Great review!! Thanks for making such useful content ❤
Hi man! Thanks for the thorough review especially knowing that you’ve been using it for a good year. I am currently using both Sigma 16mm & 30mm on a6500 for travel vlogging. To be honest when backpacking around, I wouldnt really change my lens since it’s not so versatile. As much as I am loving the sharpness of prime lens, I am really thinking of selling both for 18-105mm. At the end, as a budget traveler I feel like versatility does matter and I only want to carry one lens. What would be your suggestion since you have all three lenses?
I totally hear what you’re saying Syifa! I carry around all three all the time and my backpack gets pretty cumbersome(I always carry too much stuff) as far as other suggestions... what kind of images do you take? And is it mostly video or photo?
Syifa Adriana you have same arsenal of lenses as me, im not impressed with 18-105, its not very sharp and not very good indoors, prime lenses are awesome
Then to be honest I’d say the 18-105 is your best choice! There are a couple other lenses that might be a good choice if you did primarily photography, but this thing was made for video!
Thanks for the review! How do you like the power zoom feature? I saw a sample from another video and I was like..."damn, now I can be like Wes Anderson!" Is the power zoom smooth for video? Is it easy to ease into and out of?
Great review! I have the a6000 and this lens is perfect for it. I also have a Sony FE 70-200 mm constant aperture 4.0 which translates out to 105-300 on an cropped sensor so I've got the complete focal range of 18 to 300 covered! For the money I think this lens is a great investment paired with the FE 70-200. It's all I need!
This lens is great, I purchased a6400 body and 18-105 f4, just avoided the kit lenses. This one lens just suffice all my needs. I find myself shooting mostly daytime outdoors and f4 is more than enough. Earlier I was using nikon d3400 with kit 16-55 kit lens, 35mm f1.8, and 55-300mm Ed vr. Its pain to carry so many lenses and keep switching.
Dunna your videos are awesome! Super genuine and insightful! Just subbed! Hey for an a6000 In (2022) dated I know but on a budget lol… do you think this Sony 18-105 or the new sigma 18-50? I would get the sigma but the oss and reach of the Sony makes me question it! Mainly for video ! Thanks man!
I just received a used copy of the 10-18mm f/4 Sony lens and I am somewhat underwhelmed. It seems to produce imagery that is reminiscent of the 28-70mm f/4 Sony Zeiss lens that I replaced with a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 several years ago. The colors and the micro-contrast of the Tamron greatly exceeded the Sony-Zeiss. I am sending the 10-18mm back and will replace it with the Tamron 11-20mm when it becomes available. I have been happy with only a few of the Sony lenses (85mm f/1.8, 70-200mm f/4 ad 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3) that I have tried but, have been exceptionally pleased with the 28-75,, f/2.8 Tamron...
This 18-105 is definitely the lens I use most on my a6500. Hardly use my 35mm anymore. Shoot both video & still equally, so it makes sense for me. Just found your channel - nice to find someone with so much content I can relate too!
Yeah I hear that, the closest thing I’ve found in that range is the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 which is amazing but you have to have an adapter and it makes it a bit less amazing
Dunna Did It confused as to which lens I want next. Unless, I can find a great deal for the fe70-200mm. Even thought about the 85mm f1.8. Hmm decisions.
I am using a6500, if only one lens I could have? I will always say 16mm F1.4 😈 Low night, vlogging or landscape & architecture photography, all I can do! 😍 And of course if I could own another one, I will take 18-105
Hi Dunna. Which do you think is better? This lens or the new 16-55mm f2.8? I would like to purchase only one zoom lens for my a6400 and I am considering the shaprness of the lens too.
New subscriber here. Thanks for the video. Used your link and so I'm getting this and the 16 1.4. I can't wait to use them. I have the a6400 so I need all things a6400 related.
Crazy that of all the Sony a6500 videos, I come across yours and find out that you're from my hometown! I moved down from there back in 07 to California. Anyhow, I bought this camera back in March and absolutely love it! I contemplated getting this lens, but ended up renting the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 on a recent trip and absolutely loved it! Crispy sharpness even in low light! Not as wide a range of focal lengths but I think you should give that lens a shot!
Dunna Did It I received the lens the day before my trip and did not have time to update the firmware (packing, kids, lol). Anyway, I absolutely had no focus problems when I shot video and photos at any time during my trip. Super-challenging light scenarios (Vegas day/night, indoor/outdoor) and walking around Vancouver/Victoria later on my trip...it performed like a champ. You should try it out!
Thanks for the quick reply. Currently shooting with the GH5, though thinking about moving to Sony. Side note, hate that TH-cam made me reload the video on mobile to see your reply. *shakes fists*
As much as I highly recommend moving to Sony 😉😉 I should mention that sigma makes an M4/3 Mount version of that 30mm as well and people seem to love it! But switch to Sony anyway haha. And yeah I know what you mean about the reload thing. Then you spend 3 minutes trying to figure out where you were in the video so you can pick up.
@@mikehunt5626 i love the sigma 16mm, own it as well, but for travel sometimes I wish that I could zoom into subjects... I'm really looking at getting this 24-105.
Dunna Did It usually I would agree. I use it on my a6400 and the autofocus is incredible in video mode. It’s perfect because I have a canon to put it on as well, so I always have that option. I’m patiently waiting for a sigma art 28-135 f2 😭
I've now binge watched 4 of your reviews, so now I feel comfortable asking my question. I'm brand new to photography beyond point/shoots and my phone. So new I haven't even bought the camera yet (Doing that on Friday). I had already decided that I was getting the 18-105 for my versatile lens, so this video just solidified that decision. Where I'm in purchase paralysis is, I was planning on buying the Sigma 30/1.4 or the 16/1.4 lens. I asked on a FB group what they thought and all I got was it depends on what I like to shoot. I don't have a camera yet... I don't know what I like to shoot. So, as a novice should I stay with only the 18-105, or to add on to your statement in this review, if you could only have TWO lenses, what would they be? Would the 30mm be redundant (except for the better low light performance)? Would the 16mm be a better choice for wide angle shots, again because of the low light performance, or is the 18mm of the 18-105 "good enough" for a beginner?
Ok... here’s two things... 1. If it was me - I would do the 18-105 and the 30mm f1.4. 2. Here’s what I suggest. Get your camera with the 18-105. And then go shoot a whoooolllleeee bunch! If you find yourself at the wide end at 18mm quite often after shooting a bunch, get the 16mm. If you find yourself zooming in a bit, maybe the 30mm. Find out what you are going to shoot most with the versatile lens. And then get a sharper, faster lens at that focal length! Hope that helps!
@@dunnadidit why the 30mm over the 16mm? As far as shooting a bunch to see what I like, I was hoping to take this whole kit (and kaboodle) on my trip to the coast of Spain in a month. I'm kind of in a unique situation that won't allow me to even have my hands on the camera until I'm in Spain (I can DM you on IG if your want to know more). Here's what I'm envisioning shooting most at least for this vacation: skyline from charter boat; various buildings; my wife in front of various scenery; my wife indoors; museum stuff indoors. I know I could get away with the 18-105 for virtually all of that, but I worry about low light situations, especially in museums and restaurants.
I just find the 30mm more useful for what I shoot, but honestly it’s very close with the 16mm. Sounds like the 16mm might actually be better for what you’re looking for!
@@dunnadidit Thank you! I think I will go with the 16mm. From your reviews and everybody else on the Tube, 16mm just seems so much fun to shoot with. And it gives me something else to buy later! ("Honey, I need this 30mm! Dunna Said So!")
Yep, really don't understand the obsession. A new camera generation will have get better af, ISO,dynamic range, lighter and battery will last longer. A new car generation will roll just the same!
Using A6500 with only 18-105mm lens for now. AF with this lens works great, can get smooth buttery transition from de-focus to focus point.. With manual focus, just setup AEL button to MANUAL/AF when released and it'll work great (other stuff of manually focusing). And my second lens would be 16mm/30mm Prime lens for faster aperture, low light scenario (18-105mm problem), depth of field (range 50-85mm can be achieved), wide angle view.
That comes by watching out all your videos lol! I love a6500 and the only lens I can think of for an all around lens was 18-105. If you have time please check out my Instagram account RVN383 (your already following me). Im getting my set up one by one. If you could feature using a monopod / handheld steadicam, for stabilizing besides electronic gimbals. Would love to see it from you!
Cool! Thanks for watching so much! I’m glad my videos were helpful! I’ll definitely check out your stuff and throw a stabilization video on my list of ideas!
How well is it, I’m looking for a lens to shoot basketball, i have a decent zoom lens but it isn’t wide enough. Also my current lens is extremely bad a stabilizing my footage.
Yeah me too! I have all three of those and they all serve their purpose for sure. It would be nice to see something with this range with a bit better aperture though... my 30 and 16 might collect some dust if that was the case haha
What? This lens is at most 15% better than a 16-50 kit lens. There is nothing about this lens I could call quality. While simga 30mm's sharpness at f2.8 can cut your eyes.
Dunna, would 18-105 will still be your choice if you had sony a7iii camera ? I am wondering which one lens could provide similar versatility for a7iii. Thanks for the great video.
Dunna, great video. One lens...so tough. I thought my Zeiss 16-70 f4 would be my one and only but the f4....I'm really enjoying the Sigma 16mm f14 and just recently received the Sigma 30mm f14 for my birthday. I'm going to go out on limb here and say that if i had to choose one it would be the 30mm. I think the length is workable, i.e. if you want closer to the subject then move closer, and further, move further, also the f14 is beast mode! #instagramnotificationsquad get some!
WOOOOOOO! LOVE MY #INSTAGRAMNITIFICATIONSQUAD !!! Yeah the 30 is a close second for me for sure. That thing is a beast for sure. I really wanna try that 16-70 though!
Other than price is there any reason why I might wanna go with the 30 instead of 16? Been thinking about purchasing the 16 and im just hoping it’s the right decision lol
I have this lens and recently bought a viltrox 85mm f1.8. I was thinking that the viltrox qould be so much sharper, but NOT. This lens is excellent! I have to keep doubting it because it keeps impressing.
If I absolutely have to use wide angles I do but else I use the 85, also for video: www.flickr.com/photos/gregorpq/albums/72157662457661246 th-cam.com/video/DH4O6OTepe4/w-d-xo.html I also just finished a whole wedding film just with the 85.
The 18-105 literally weighs nothing. If people think that’s heavy they need to do some push ups or something. Throw a 70-200 g2 lens on a body then let’s talk heavy.
I have this lens and a Tamron 18-300. The Sony is better for video as the Tamron Zoom is a bit sticky but you get a wider range. What do you think of the Tamron v Sony?
Super helpful actually. I'm going to hire this lens and see if I prefer all primes or if this would be a handy zoom to have! The f4 was putting me off as I shoot weddings and family sessions so may need some better low light capabilities...
I should really ask you guys how to pronounce your Instagram handles... 😅😅 Sorry!
Dunna Did It 😂
Dunna Did It You are one of the first people who actually pronounced my name right 😆
WHAT! NO WAY!! I thought I had totally failed on that for sure!!
Even Norwegians have a huge problem to pronounce my name😬
Per - Yeah I probably would have just given up if you had asked a question for this video. “This other person also asked a question 😂”
1mm to 1000mm f0.95
Perfect! Pancake lens too right?
Dunna Did It psssshhhh. Needs to be thicc like a 70-200 to look professional.
Tru tru... dress to impress right?
@@jackofblades6736 lol! Gotta look professional. Hilarious
Here you go, weighs at 50kg.
I really like how he still reply’s to us even if the video is 2 years old!! Such a good TH-camr 👍
I’m tryin!
Respect
Im over 50 years old, and nobody ever listens to me.
That’s great to hear! It really is a great lens!
Lens 18-105 f.4 and 35mm f1.8 is best for me.
Compared to the 50 1.8, is it really more noisy and less sharp?
Photographie & Vidéo The 16-50 is incredibly soft. Once you finally upgrade and start using lenses like the 24-105 then you’ll see a huge difference
TRNDSTTRS yeah that’s over a grand for a lens when most people’s cameras don’t even cost that much. Chill out
The kit lens is fantastic - its ridiculously small and light, performs well, has OSS, and takes outstanding pictures.
Agreed x100!
Yeah it still holds up for sure!
Thanks for the input John! We definitely see eye to eye on this one!!
I think that would be a great combo! 18-105 for run and gun and the 35 for more planned stuff!
Sony, give this guy money. I think I'm buying this lens just because I fell in love with him. [SWOON]
Haha thanks! Feel free to use those affiliate links in the description! 😉
@@dunnadiditdamn bro you better be in them DMs with legendary fizz I don't think I have ever seen a girl flirting with any Sony tube douchers
Ahhh I want this so bad!!
I would agree with having the sigma 18-35 but that setup is so big I only use it to record video for youtube in my office. I rather the Sony 35 1.8 or the sigma 30 for there size and sharpness. Plus I find that the adapter drains battery when the camera is off
Very interesting points! I’ve been super interested in the 18-35. Those are good things to keep in mind
Yeah, but honestly using f1.8 for portraits is kind of too much: if you focus on the eyes you lost focus on other parts of the face.
I already buy this after a long time using a kit lens and Zoom SEL 55-210. For me, that's a great investment right now
got this lens as my first (except the kit), been using it ever since most of the time for nearly everything.
always my lens recommendation to anyone ask me which lens to buy for sony aps-c
Awesome!! Love it!
I was thinking about going with the sigma 16 f1.4 for my first lens other than my kit lens. But now I kinda want the zoom capability, what’s the difference in quality between the sigma and this 18-105?
@@gioortiz8459 same man!!! That's what I was thinking, too!
Y’all should keep an eye out for the tamron 17-70 f2.8 coming out soon. It might make me change my mind on this one
@@dunnadidit Awesome, I’ll surely check this one out!
Just scored this lens on ebay open box for 370 dollars and got it today. Things a BEAST
I’d probably prefer the 18-135 over this one for the smaller size, less weight, and wider range. Did try the 18-105 in store though, quality is definitely top notch!
I totally hear you, the big winner for this one for me is the constant f4. But it’s a trade off for sure!
Thanks for sharing this! Love your points!
Absolutely love this! Thanks for sharing!
My priority list of lenses for video:
1 - zoom lens (Sony 18-105mm f4)
2 - fixed “art” lens (Sigma 30mm f1.4)
3 - wide-angle (Rokinon 12mm f2.0 or Sony 10-18mm f4 if you can afford it)
Nice! Replace the 12mm with the sigma 16 f1.4 and you named my whole kit lol!
that's my kit!!
I’m so glad this was helpful! Thanks for watching!

If there’s only one lens I can carry for my aps-c, I would say it’s Sigma 16mm f1.4
Thanks for sharing the video. Your videos have always been informative & fun!
Thanks for sharing Maxwell!!
I use the Sony 18-135mm most of the time. It's only flaw in my opinion is low light shooting but I don't really take that many photos where there's not enough light.
I think the only thing that is stopping me from switching to the 18-135 is the changing aperture. If they had made it constant f4... game over.
18-105 is definitely my favorite for an all around lens for my 6300
Nice!!
if it is good for video?
That's a tough one... I have owned this lens for at least a couple of years now and it has been pretty superb for me. Recently used it to shoot a wedding video and to take pictures of the guests at the wedding. While I had my Sigma 16mm lens with me, I wasn't tempted to use it. I always get consistent good results with the lens to be honest. Would be good if Sony released a f2.8 constant aperture version of this lens. I would be snapping it up asap....
Thanks for the great video as well....
I totally agree! It would be nice to have f2.8 for sure but it still does a pretty darn good job :)
It’s 2023. I ordered this lens today. It will go along with my FX30 and a 24mm f1.4 prime lens.
Same, arriving in a couple of days. Do you have any early feedbacks? :)
This is a fantastic lens I use this on my Sony a 7R2 for not only video but I also get 18 megapixel sized images for photography so it’s really very versatile. Nice review,)
That’s so awesome! I’ve often wondered about apsc lenses on the a7rii and a7riii
I chose the new 18-135 over the 18-105 for it's lighter weight, smaller size and longer range. Both solid choices though.
Nice! I really need to get one of these 18-135 to try. Are you shooting photography mostly or any video?
Dunna Did It I mostly use it walking for photos. Great at Sporting events (MLB baseball) when I need up close shots of family, zoomed in shots of players, and wide angle shots of the stadium
Nice! It’s supposed to be super sharp!
Well, it's not Sigma 16 f1.4 sharp. But for a zoom, it gets the job done.
Haha I totally hear you there!
I have the Sony 6500 and the Sony 18-105 F4 for about 2 months and I love it, I use it for car photography and videos and is amazing.
That’s great Hugo! I just took that same combination on a trip and it was great!!
Yeah, in low light I end up on my 30mm f1.4 or 16mm f1.4 for sure!
I just recently purchased this lens used for cheap. I needed this as main lens for events. If ever I needed b-roll, I can just quickly change into my Sigma 30mm 1.4 or 50mm. But for most shots, this thing does a great job.
Love the review! Binge watching right now. 😎
Sounds pretty close to my kit Ryan! Great minds think alike!
Thanks for bingeing! Hope you enjoy!

About to buy this for my 6400. Can’t wait!
Nice! Enjoy!
I just purchased an a6500 and 3 lenses. I expect the 18-105mm will be on the camera most of the time. I switched from a Canon 6d and the 24-105mm lens is what I used on it most of the time.
Nice!! What other lenses did you get?
@@dunnadidit I also got the 55-210mm, the Sony 50mm f/1.8 and the kit lens for pocket carrying. Will probably buy a 12mm too. BTW thanks for the video!
Cool!! Sounds like a nice kit! Thanks for watching!
I basically hate the way everyone does every video review ever. But I like this one. You don't seem like a sell-out douche. And I can appreciate that.
Thanks Eric!!
Just bought a fx30 just because i found it on a good deal, would this lens be a good match for it? Love your videos, thanks!
There is the amazing 16-55 mm F2.8 G lens.
this is really helping, full of good advices, examples, and you answered to all my questions ! thanks man 😃
My pleasure! Thanks so much for watching!
This was my only one lens for 6 months with my A6500 and it was awesome worth for value considering this is a 2013 ish lens
Totally agreed! I rocked this one for quite some time! Literally 70% of my videos were filmed with this lens.
What do you use instead of it now?
I take most of my photos at f8 with this lens.
loving your videos man! very informative!
Thanks so much Jeck! I’m happy you find them helpful!
Mine just arrived today! Thank you for the great review!
Nice! I hope you enjoy!!
I would say the sigma 16mm f1.4 for wide angle, and 18105 f4 for travel and videos. Definitely also the sigma 30mm f1.4 forming the "trio"~
You pretty much outlined my recommended lenses video haha 😂
Ace Mok Exactly my thoughts too. Only the 30mm f1.4 to go. Tempted by the 56mm f1.4 but certainly not in the near future.
Absolutely!!
I love my 24-240mm F3.5-6.3. I can shoot anything. From landscape, street, events, weddings, paparrazi... to wildlife. It's awesome. It's sharp and AF is quick.
Nice! I haven’t tried that one! What body do you shoot with?
I was looking at getting the A6400 and foregoing the kit lens and get this for general photography and then some Sigma primes for video.
I have the 18-135mm for my Canon but the f/5.6 at the end kills me sometimes when it starts to get darker just after sunset.
Everything you just said(except the a6400, I have the 6500) is exactly what I have and I highly recommend it!!
You said 6000, 6300 and 6500 is it bad for 6400 ?
Awesome content, among this, the sony 16-55 and the sigma 18-50 what will you pick now?
I really wanted the Sony E 16-55mm 2.8 G for the amazing quality that it produces, it’s the price that is as you said, “arm and a leg.” I’m looking to have this as a versatile travel lense for travels, some landscape. Would you recommend this for landscape photography?
It would definitely be a great option for both landscape and for an all-around lens. Obviously pretty expensive but it’s a solid lens.
I love the 18-105. I used it almost exclusively when travelling. F2.8 would be nice but not necessary outside most of the time.
That’s awesome! Haven’t used the 16-70 yet but I hope to. Thanks for watching!!
Agree, I have had this lens for a couple years and it is my walk about lens. At f4 it is not a great event lens as auto focus will hunt in low light. If you have had this lens for a bit, there is a lens firmware update that seemed to me to improve it performance on the a6500 that I shoot with.
Great insight Eric! I totally agree!
Dunna Did It thank you for your quick reply! Only for videography I dont do any photography other than for thumbnail LOL...
Syifa Adriana you have same arsenal of lenses as me, im not impressed with 18-105, its not very sharp and not very good indoors, prime lenses are awesome
Junaid Kureshi Thanks for the insight Junaid! That’s definitely my concern about 18-105 re sharpness. But can’t have the perfect world can we LOL
Sigma 16mm! Because I shoot my dog and need to be up close and wide! Also clear optical zoom helps
Love that lens!!
it's just what i need🔥
I love your content, especially that you show a lot of examples

Great review! I have the a6000 and this lens is perfect for it. I also have a Sony FE 70-200 mm constant aperture 4.0 which translates out to 105-300 on an cropped sensor so I've got the complete focal range of 18 to 300 covered! For the money I think this lens is a great investment paired with the FE 70-200. It's all I need!
That sounds like a fantastic combo!!
I just brought Sony. A6400 with 18- 105 Lens thanks you so much
Awesome!
Sigma 18-35 + canon 50 1.8 stm + sigma mc-11 and 18-105 f4
Nice kit!
Well I have rn canon 77d and 24-105mm 4L II usm and it's my "go to" I know that's bad that I have but it's budget and good
I don’t think that’s bad at all! Whatever gets the job done best and works within your budget is the PERFECT choice!
Thanks man!
Oss makes me want to say 18-105 I think
Ive just bought a fs5 with this lens and you've just confirmed everything ...nice piece. thx
That’s awesome! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing your experience!
This 18-105 is definitely the lens I use most on my a6500. Hardly use my 35mm anymore. Shoot both video & still equally, so it makes sense for me. Just found your channel - nice to find someone with so much content I can relate too!
Great minds think alike I guess! Thanks for making your way over to the channel Debbie! Great to have you be part of the community!
Same, just sold my 35mm 1.8 and kept my sigmas 16mm & 30mm, but I want a zoom lens in its place.
Haha I totally hear you. I’m in the same position! I have the new Sigma 56mm on preorder though so I’m excited to try that out!
I am using a6500, if only one lens I could have? I will always say 16mm F1.4 😈
Low night, vlogging or landscape & architecture photography, all I can do! 😍
And of course if I could own another one, I will take 18-105
Awesome!! I’ve been using the 16 a lot more lately too! What a great lens!
The only zoom lens i have for my 6300, completing my glass besides 35mm and fe 85
That’s a fantastic sounding kit!
Hi Dunna. Which do you think is better? This lens or the new 16-55mm f2.8? I would like to purchase only one zoom lens for my a6400 and I am considering the shaprness of the lens too.
16-55 is a better lens for sure, less reach and no OSS tho
Will the 18-105mm remember the focal length when I turn off my camera and turn it on again?
I don’t think so.
No. You will though.
New subscriber here. Thanks for the video. Used your link and so I'm getting this and the 16 1.4. I can't wait to use them. I have the a6400 so I need all things a6400 related.
When compared to kit lens how this lens perform in both wide & zoom (18mm & 50mm)?
My experience is that it’s better than the kit all around, but not a HUGE difference.
It's very good. Better than the kit lens.
That’s awesome! I’ve definitely been interested in that lens. Did they fix all the autofocus problems people were talking about?
Dunna Did It I received the lens the day before my trip and did not have time to update the firmware (packing, kids, lol). Anyway, I absolutely had no focus problems when I shot video and photos at any time during my trip. Super-challenging light scenarios (Vegas day/night, indoor/outdoor) and walking around Vancouver/Victoria later on my trip...it performed like a champ. You should try it out!
That’s great to hear! I’ll have to try to hunt one down!
What did you film on during the talking head shots while holding the camera kit you’re talking about?
Sigma 30mm f1.4 😁 on of my favorites. I have a review on that too! th-cam.com/video/89NLu539MCU/w-d-xo.html
18-105g got a very effective stablization than other lenses in the same range.
Absolutely! I love it!
I have this lens but the sigma 16mm F 1.4 is where it’s at
Love that lens too! I’ve been using it a lot lately since I started doing daily Instagram stories.
Really? Yea I love the wide shots included the Death of feel it gives
Lol “death of feel” sounds like a metal album.
Agree totally, i have not taken my sigma 16mm off my a6000 since buying it. Brilliant lens.
@@mikehunt5626 i love the sigma 16mm, own it as well, but for travel sometimes I wish that I could zoom into subjects... I'm really looking at getting this 24-105.
Sigma 18-35 f1.8. I know it’s not a far zoom at all. But it’s the sharpest, fastest, cleanest lens I own. I fckn love it
It’s pretty incredible. If there were a version I didn’t need an adapter for... I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Dunna Did It usually I would agree. I use it on my a6400 and the autofocus is incredible in video mode. It’s perfect because I have a canon to put it on as well, so I always have that option. I’m patiently waiting for a sigma art 28-135 f2 😭
Dunna Did It just bought the 18-105 because of this vid. Thank you!
@@dunnadidit oh, and thank you for answering so quickly.
B&H has the 55210 for $2 better than free with the purchase of an a6400 until 20190413. I’m tempted.
Dang! That’s sick!
I roll the same way, thousands of dollars on gear, $1500 vehicle. :)
Lol nice!!
That’s awesome! You basically just described my whole kit lol!
Do I need the adapter for this lens to use with a A7RII?
Nope! But you will have to use it in crop mode.
Super helpful video man thanks alot!
Cheers!
Dunna, is this lens the equivalent of the Canon 18-135mm?
Similar. Sony also has an 18-135 that’s newer and super sharp but has a changing aperture. I think that might be more similar.
@@dunnadidit do you think the Sony 18-135 is better than the Sony 18-105?
Dunna Did It I am also curious about this
@@dunnadidit Could you make a video about Sony 18-135?
Great review. Convinced me to buy it for my sports videography job!
How well is it, I’m looking for a lens to shoot basketball, i have a decent zoom lens but it isn’t wide enough. Also my current lens is extremely bad a stabilizing my footage.
@@VincentMhire It’s been super nice to use, solid image quality and ofc a great focal range to work with. Couldn’t recommend more
Great review, i wish this lens was f2.2 i guess no one making any of these, if that was the case i would have choose this over sigma 30 & 16
There’s a Sony 24-105 f4 that I think is supposed to be kind of a full frame version of this lens. I’d probably look into that one.
@@dunnadidit thanks a lot.
My pleasure!
Thanks for the input Michael!
@@gioortiz8459 kinda depends on what you wanna do. Architecture and Landscape -> 16 mm | Portrait and stuff like that -> 30mm
I have this lens and recently bought a viltrox 85mm f1.8. I was thinking that the viltrox qould be so much sharper, but NOT. This lens is excellent! I have to keep doubting it because it keeps impressing.
Only lens on APSC: 85/1.4
That’s it? No wide angles?
If I absolutely have to use wide angles I do but else I use the 85, also for video:

I also just finished a whole wedding film just with the 85.
That’s awesome!
which brand? Samyang?
@@yohanngabriel1362 Sony. The GM85/f1.4 is dynamite in small packaging.
Great vid bud. Can you tell me why the 110 is 5x more expensive than the 105mm? Is it that much more superior?
i had the 18105g before. Sold it and got myself the 1670z instead. The 18105 was just heavy
How do you like the 16-70?
The 18-105 literally weighs nothing. If people think that’s heavy they need to do some push ups or something. Throw a 70-200 g2 lens on a body then let’s talk heavy.
Haha yeah it’s really not a heavy lens
Super helpful! Thank you for making this video
Thanks for watching!
Looks like a good one.
It’s a banger for surrrrreeeeee!!! (Sorry, too much coffee)
Dunna Did I'd be that excited if I had one too, with or without coffee.
Haha so true 😉
I have this lens and a Tamron 18-300. The Sony is better for video as the Tamron Zoom is a bit sticky but you get a wider range. What do you think of the Tamron v Sony?
i loved it when you greeted those cyclists 😍😍😍 the way you said it
Super helpful actually. I'm going to hire this lens and see if I prefer all primes or if this would be a handy zoom to have! The f4 was putting me off as I shoot weddings and family sessions so may need some better low light capabilities...
Yeah the only issue I have with it is the low light performance but it’s not as bad as you’d think!
#instagramnotificationsquad here!
YYAAAAAAAASSSSSSS! I Love my Insta Squad!!
Love how much your channel has blown up man!
George!!! So good to see you in the comments section! Thank you so much dude! I really wanna see that incredible music bus of yours some day!
Dunna Did It really hope you can do !! I’ll have it in the states some day. Let me know if you’re ever in Europe and we’ll make it work!
Definitely! And let me know if you ever end up in Canada with it too 😁
