Parfon my ignorance..what is "shaan"?? Is it a specific class of composition, like kayda, tukda, peshkar in tabla...or is it name of a special composition....like say pigeon sound kayda, ganesh paran etc in tabla..

Shaan is a term used generally in Indian classical music for a type of composition that is usually played before or during the performance. Each raag seems to have its own unique one. This is as far as I know.
