1. When I survey the wond'rous Cross On which the Prince of Glory dy'd, My richest Gain I count but Loss, And pour Contempt on all my Pride. 2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the Death of Christ my God: All the vain Things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his Blood. 3. See from his Head, his Hands, his Feet, Sorrow and Love flow mingled down! Did e'er such Love and Sorrow meet? Or Thorns compose so rich a Crown? 4. His dying Crimson, like a Robe, Spreads o'er his Body on the Tree; Then am I dead to all the Globe, And all the Globe is dead to me. 5. Were the whole Realm of Nature mine, That were a Present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my Soul, my Life, my All.
Growing up in the Caribbean in the 1970's and 1980's in the Methodist Church, it was church every Sunday, no excuses. And this hymn was a big part of my childhood. I still adore it so.
When reflecting on the words it makes you feel the tremendous love which the Saviour has for him to have paid such a heavy price for our salvation. O How GREAT IS OUR GOD!
As an American, I'm used to hearing this to a different tune, but I prefer the one used here. I tend to prefer the English tunes over the American ones.
@@edifyguy This splendid melody was composed by George Miller (1735 - 1807) one time flautist in Handel's orchestra. He was appointed organist of St George's Minster, Doncaster in 1756, a post he held for fifty years until death. The tune has all the solid workmanship I enjoy in the best of18th century compositions. Measured, dignified, assured and beautiful.
My favorite hymn..... See from his head, his hands, his feet. Sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e'er such love and sorrow meet.... Hallelujah to the Precious Lamb of God!!!!!
Thank you my Heavenly Father, for giving me your best gift, your only Son my Lord and Savour Jesus Christ to died for my sins, on that old rugged cross.
Oh such wondrous thought and praise towards our Creator, Redeemer & King. The 4th stanza is very very rare to find as sung or mentioned as full hymnal. When we get to heaven after His 2nd coming we redeemed shall lift our voices in praise & thank our Lord for taking such a risk to free, save us to make a freewill choice to be belong to Him for all eternity
“To be crucified with Christ means three things: the person on the cross is facing in only one direction. Second, he’s not going back, and third he has no further plans of his own.” (A.W. Tozer)
Fine singing as always from Kings with such clarity and diction.. a truly humbling work for Easter. Really takes me back to time last in England when l thoroughly enjoyed attending Sung Evensong daily during the week and then three services each Sunday. You can never really tire of such a choir in such a fine building!
The balance of the voices is just amazing to me.All parts are beautiful.I noted the wonderful bass part coming through nicely.I am so partial to this choir and the beautiful work it does.Wonderful Good Friday hymn.
Yes, the balance is exceptional. Often the lower register bass sound is drowned out, but here they come through. Then on the last verse the ascendent of the trebles in concert with the lyrics, heavenly!
Fascinating. Just ran across the cross-Atlantic divide on this hymn. Americans tend to sing it to a different tune (“Hamburg”). This tune is “Rockingham.” Beautifully sung, but still wrong to my ear. Church I grew up in used the “were the whole realm” verse as a musical response to the offering.
In America, it all depends on the denomination, because I sang in the choir at an Episcopal church, we sang Rockingham. In fact, that's the tune in the hymnal
Please put the lyrics up here they may be different to the ones I'm looking up :) I sang this in The Pietermaritzburg Children's Choir & The Natal Youth Choir in SA :) xxxx so much love for this hymn "pour contempt on all my pride..." " Or thorns compose so rich a crown" Glorious :))))
I love this song its so moving, with such wonderful truths, If anyone's interested please see this version from a church i attend just outside London England - When I Survey - The Gift Of Love Easter Celebration 2014

This is the tune that American Lutherans used for many years until it was changed to "Hamburg." While I enjoy that tune as well, this is the one that I prefer.
does it ever seem amazing, that the God of the universe who created all things and upholds all things by the word of his power, forsook his glory, came to earth in the form of a mere creature that he created, was scorned at every turn, yet he was proclaiming God's redemption and love for mankind, and then was crucified by same people whom he was preaching to, and was punished by God himself for the rebellion of all mankind. Seems almost mind-boggling. No human would ever do such a thing. "For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person - though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die - but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" -- Romans 5:6-8
Whose setting is this glorious descant? It doesn’t seem to be one of the more commonly used ones (it’s not Wilcocks, Rutter, Cleobury, or Guest). I’ve been searching high and low for it with no success.
Wonderful singing! I just wish the organ scholar would read the text and not the music, he needs to make it quite obvious to the musically uneducated congregation where they can breathe!

I thought I knew this hymn, but verse 4 is new to me (a former Anglican).
@@mottledbrain apparently it’s been omitted from most versions of the hymn printed for a long time.
Amen

This is a truly beautiful bymn. Tender, deep with emotion, it brings me to tears.

I must admit that I LOVE the Rockingham tune for this hymn! I find it more fitting!
“Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.”
One of the most beautiful hyms of all

I can’t sing this hymn without weeping.
I does have that effect doesn't it. I guess that is part of our worship

Magnificent tune, very regal. Also, the usual King's College's impeccable quality. Thank you.
You're very welcome!
I struggled to find this hymn on TH-cam with the right melody. Thank you for doing it right!! My favorite hymn of all time, you made my day!
As an American, I'm used to hearing it with the "wrong" melody (LOL!) but I prefer this one by far as well.
Search for "Rockingham" to find this melody.
I love both melodies!
Another of my favorite Hymns of the Protestant church!!
All Honor, Praise, and Glory be to Thee, Oh Lord!
