YEAH it's like that here in Asia, the thing is that sometimes u get extra work from home so maybe at six u are free, but u have to do extra work back home, but it all depends on your job and position.
Some people work a lot and some people don't, I think that the very long working hours are something more of a stereotype.

So, is a "salaryman" only the guys in suits working in the offices? Or is a garbagetruckdriver a salaryman? A scaffolder? A carpenter? Do they also work 12 hour days for no money? Curious about this!
I earn approx 425000 yen/month as a scaffolder, working 8 hours per day, 5 weeks vacation every year. Is that good by japanese standards?
Do you retire in Japan? At what age?
It mostly means people in an office. Mostly a white collar type of job. But they usually work about 10 hours plus a day or cannot leave until their bosses do. Their also kind of required to eat and drink with coworkers and their bosses after work too. They usually earn about 4000 usd a month but they easily work about 60 hours a week. But note they live in Tokyo which is hugely expensive. They usually have the 10 days of PTO but many don't take it at all as it looks bad to leave coworkers your work.
Some literally work themselves to death and suicide and stress are a bit too common by western standards. It has a bad connotation now as many of these men don't go home until late and waste money on hostess and drinking. Leaving their wives and kids at home. Literally just becoming only a source of income for their families but also leaving their wives alone and in loveless marriages.
