    "Let's lower the car back on to the ground and see how she sits". "Hmmm! Not as low as what I was expecting"! "Oh!!! lets take out the pieces of wood that's holding it up!!" "Ha Ha Ha! Not bad. Perfect". Priceless Matt. still chuckling lol

    it's a video version of the "rod & custom" little books articles from the 50s! good job! I went "new school" on my 48 Merc, have yet to mount tires on it to see how it sits. stay safe!

    I use a piece of all thread in the spring holes, just tighten up the bolt and the holes are in line when you put the clamps on.

    You bet your Dad's checking in!! Lol .. He must be so super excited to watch it come together. I've recommended the rust encapsulator to my buddy trying to help save him some time in the build he's doing. Now you got me thinking of the 56 chevy apache leaf springs!! Have a good one bud!

    Your "High School Hot Rod" idea is great!! Can I suggest something it instantly reminds me of that is kinda similar and associated?? How about "The Auto Shop Hot Rod". When you say "High School Hot Rod", it instantly makes me remember kids working on projects in "Auto Shop". A nice learning option that sadly is now only a "fond memory"!!

    As Ecosse57 mentioned below, the rear bar is a panhard bar, not a sway bar. Used to locate the side-to-side motion of the rear axle in relation to the body, not to stabilize for body sway around corners. Cheers!

    I love those 46-48 coupes. That’s going to be such a cool fun car for your dad to bomb around in.
    In high school I worked at a restoration shop and we had a 47 coupe (stock) and a 32 tudor high boy sedan with a Pinto drive train as shop cars. It was so fun to run around picking up parts and running errands for the boss in these jalopies

    Andy did a great job on the Dago axle, back in the day I sent my '48 having a shock mounting hole to Mor-Drop in California. Was sickened when it returned as the shock holes were elongated into an inch long teardrop. Your holes are round as they should be!
    Dropping is not a home project, a video of his process and fixturing would be welcome.

    Looking good Matt . The first car my brother and i ever owned was a 48 Ford 2 door sedan . Dad helped us get it in 1955 before i started driving . It looked new at that time . Then my brother traded in in on a 53 Ford about the time i started driving it . So i only got to sneak out on the road a few times in the 48 .

    Hey Matt,
    Everytime I see that 47 coupe I wanna kick myself in the ass for selling my 46 coupe back in 1966.
    You are doing a great job on the stance of the car.
    It will be great to see your Dad when he is able to enjoy his Summer Toy that his son has enabled him to have and enjoy.
    BTW, I think the correct tire size for the front would be the 600-15 but that size may depend on the tire maker.
    Be Safe, well and Warm

    • @IronTrapGarage
      @IronTrapGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      5.90-15 is a more common size these days. Only like one company makes a 6.00-16 from the vintage tire companies I found. Size is about the same as far as circumference goes

    I've never caught you saying what sequence is used to thin the spring leaves. Do you just take out the shorter ones at the top of the pack, or do you remove a Top, mid and longer leaf to thin the stack across the overall pack?

      i'm wondering too.

    • @IronTrapGarage
      @IronTrapGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I usually remove one or two near the bottom of the back to make for a softer ride and then the rest from the top as they’re basically “spacers”. Not real science to it I just do as I feel fit haha.

    In bending the steering arms out on the stub axles as you did your going to lose the Akermann geometry of the steering which is going to have a detrimental affect on the steering. Maybe its not too noticeable on these old suspension setups but you are more than capable of doing a further modification to restore the Ackermann angle.

  • @threynolds2

    When you drop the tie rods are you concerned with upsetting the Ackerman geometry?
