    Old school hot rodding at it's finest! Ford's metallurgy was and still is the best!

      I got a Model A axle from a farm cart for free. After sandblasting it looked good, and although it looked better than the Chevy van axle it replaced, the stance left a lot to be desired. At the time shop facities were unavailable, even so, the videos show it might have been done with a simple jig, and a torch. KUDOS !

    Great video! I’ve watched several videos on dropping axles here lately. It’s interesting seeing the different techniques people use.

    The 'stub ends' of the axle you drop in this presentation look to have altered king pin inclination. Do you further amend the axles to adjust this? Otherwise the 'stub axles' would have a centreline pointing upwards, as opposed to level with the ground when correctly install, ala Ford factory installations. Is this not the case? I sub to your channel a while ago, but nothing showed in my notifications until I was searching today. It seems you're posting on a more regular basis now. Great, I've enjoyed a good Sunday afternoon catching up on your more recent shows. I think sometimes, some of the more routine build procedures get overlooked by other 'trad rodding' channels and you seem to give authoritative personal experience tips as you present. That I find informative and satisfying and I'm sure others will too. Yeah! More 'Trad Rods'! - Koops, Durham, North East England, U.K.

    • @LGKustoms
      @LGKustoms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      North east England? Cool! My grandmother is from Newcastle.
      Yes on this axle the kingpin inclination was off a bit. It can be remedied in a press, or my plan was to put it back in the axle jig and tweak it a bit more. As I mentioned in the video, this was only the second axle I’ve done, so there was still some learning.
      Glad you’re enjoying the channel and all caught up! Thanks for watching!

      My jig needs a rebuild, and I’d like to change a few things around on it. So when that happens, I’ll try and do a video about it

    Super cool! Interesting that the a/m drops are presumably cast rather than forged.

    • @LGKustoms
      @LGKustoms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do believe the So-Cal aftermarket axles are forged, but yes, most are cast.

    You guys are so lucky when it comes to vehicle and parts modifications, we in Australia would need to obtain an engineering certificate and possibly have the bend x-rayed then again we might not even be allowed to heat and bend an axle.

    • @LGKustoms
      @LGKustoms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Canada every province has different regulations, but almost all the provinces require thorough inspections for new builds before they can be put on the road. Technically we’re not supposed to heat, weld, or modify any steering or suspension parts, but most inspectors will use their best judgment, and if they deem it to be done properly and safe, usually it isn’t a big deal.
      The local police where I live can also give out mandatory vehicle inspections if they feel a car is modified in an unsafe way. And while they usually leave the hot rod people alone, they definitely target the younger JDM crowd. Which is rather unfortunate because a lot of them don’t have the money to pay for inspections, and a lot of them are issued for ridiculous reason like window tint or a performance muffler.
      Even if your car passes the inspection with no issues, you still have to pay for it, and take time off work to deal with it.

    great demo, I always wondered how it was done. in your lay over comparison the yellow axle looks like it has a different camber. Is that just the camera angle or intended? Victoria BC? jeez that's so close I'm in Richmond. Neat to see local talent.

    That's a very good point safety feature to have an Oringal drop axle.
    The after market one's will snap on you that is NO GOOD!

  • @thewretchedmessgarage7097
    @thewretchedmessgarage7097 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I always wondered how the old timers did that. The busted axle is scary looking! It also begs the question... Why DOESN'T the aftermarket use a forged axle and ol' Henrys metallurgy?

    Aftermarket axles are available in either cast or forged. It's not the same price. As always you get what you pay for. It depends how much you value your life and other's.

    GREAT VIDEO, DOES THIS CHANGE THE CAMBER ANGLE?

    • @LGKustoms
      @LGKustoms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It could if you wanted it to. The angle finder attached to the axle is to ensure the kingpin inclination stays the same keeping the camber correct.

    I've been wondering, how much does a used drop axle cost?

    • @LGKustoms
      @LGKustoms  ปีที่แล้ว

      At swap meets I’ve seen them range from $100-$400. I usually charge around $300 to drop an original axle depending on its condition.

    • @michaelgillespie1206
      @michaelgillespie1206 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LGKustoms you can buy new drop forged axles with 4inch drop for less than $200.00 that includes shipping, you can have a set of deuce rails at your doorstep for $750.00 anywhere in the continental U.S. and that's the price with shipping, stamped same as original, with bolt holes in original positions.

    • @LGKustoms

      @@michaelgillespie1206 sure you can buy it all new. You can also just go to a Ford dealership and buy a brand new car, but that isn’t what this is about.
      I also don’t live in the US, so that $200 axle is closer more like $500 for me and American Stamping 32 rails are closer to $1200
