Replacing a Freezer Door Gasket

- Replacing the freezer door gasket on a Whirlpool french door refrigerator (model GX5FHDXVQ02). Age caused the gasket to become over-compressed which resulted in frost build-up around the interior edges of the freezer door. This procedure should be similar for most types of refrigerator and freezer door gaskets. See the links below for the gasket I used:

Note: If you don't care about color, sometimes it's quite a bit cheaper to go with the gray gasket (W10571967).

If you have a hell of a time removing your door, (like I did) you don't have to. Just carefully pry off the old gasket and stretch it around the door. Stretch the new gasket around the door and press it into the groove. They are big flexible rectangles that can bend and rotate. No door removal required!

My door looks alot like yours, but it's a GE profile. The frost is mainly on one side, but the gasket there seems intact. I found a crack on the other (bottom right) corner. I stuffed a bit of foam in there (it seals) to see if this solves the problem. If so, I will replace the gasket.

I followed your directions. What if the gasket isn't puffy enough to complete the seal? There are still areas that are sealing. Thank you.
Hmm, I'm no pro but maybe those low areas were just spots that got compressed during shipping and they'll eventually puff back up.

Thank you. I followed this process but new seal worked for a short time and eventually pulled away causing leakage around the door panel and iced up the freezer compartment. I've removed and reinstalled using hair dryer to seal around the door area, I also did that the first install. I've confirmed it's the correct seal. I'm waiting to see if this last reinstall changes anything but have my doubts. I'm not sure why the seal seems to pull away from the freezer. It looks completely sealed after each attempt, then it isn't. Any idea what could be causing it?
Is your seal the same type as mine, with the rubber ridge that you press down into the channel? If so, it sounds like maybe the suction created when opening the door is eventually pulling the seal out of the channel. I'm no pro but you could try putting a thin bead of silicone caulking in the channel before pressing in the seal. Once cured, that should give you a stronger bond. And, if you ever need to remove it, the silicone should peel off without too much hassle.
@@Mikeattempts Thanks. Yes, it looks exactly like yours in the video. The seal seems to be staying in the channel from what I can tell. I thought maybe the new seal was defective but it does seem to seal once I use the hair dryer on it but develops separation from the connecting door frame a few days after install. I'll have to wait and see how this rework today does. Seems like seal is actually shrinking after a period of time. Thanks for suggestion though.
@@tkstaple I'm not sure it matters but I didn't heat up the seal or the door. I only used the hair dryer to slightly warm the seal to remove the bends and creases caused by the packaging.
How do I know the gasket is actually bad? What if I take it off and blow dry it, clean the area, etc, would it work again?
I mean it's old as crap and I don't want to waste time. Could it be saved?
You'll know the gasket is bad if frost or ice is forming near the gasket on the inside, as shown in my video. If you don't have that frost/ice buildup, it could just be a faulty door switch.

If you open the fridge door, there should be a sticker inside showing the model.

@@charlielaudico3523 Hmm, you might have a hard time finding a replacement if it's that old. You could try removing the seal and take it to your local appliance repair shop to see if they could find you a replacement.

How u go about ordering replacement seal rubber
Just Google the model number of your fridge followed by "door gasket". You should see results for places like Repair Clinic and Appliance Parts Pros. You can either purchase from one of them or, using their sites, find the exact part number for your seal and then check Amazon or eBay to see who has the best price.
I have the exact same fridge!!! How do I get a seal for your exact one?? My freezer has iced up and now it won't stop beeping because the seal is warped and old! I'm going insane! Help!

@Mike attempts Thanks ! Does yours have the beeping thing when the door is left "open"? I tried to turn it off and pressed buttons. Now it had some wierd code and I hope I didn't turn the whole fridge off. Omg

@@melmelbry5754 Mine doesn't have the door beeper. I'm no pro but I wouldn't think the gasket would cause the door alarm. If you don't have frost/ice buildup around the inside of the seal, it could just be a faulty door switch.
@Mike attempts when I close it, I can see light coming through the cracks of the seal.
Maybe it's the butt tons of ice forming that keeps it from sealing?
I can't open the top wire drawer at all. I don't know how to even defrost a freezer without ruining all the food?
@@melmelbry5754 Yeah, it's probably the seal if you can't even fully close the door due to the ice. You could put all of the freezer food in a cooler with the ice cubes from the freezer and then use a blow-dryer to melt the ice buildup. That will buy you some time to replace the gasket before the ice builds up again.

There are many online options that should have the gasket you need. You could try Amazon, Sears Parts Direct, Appliance Parts Pros, Repair Clinic, eReplacement Parts, Part Select, or Easy Appliance Parts.
Do we hav to take off the doors?
I only took mine off to clean it, but you should be able to replace the gasket without removing the freezer door.
