As a Canadian it is SO weird to me to hear Americans talking about whether or not they can access basic healthcare. Anyways, I'm glad you're getting to some answers and solutions for what you need!
Thanks for sharing this with us! I'm looking forward to hearing how it goes for you. I've taken injectable T off and on a few times and gotten most of the permanent results I wanted (especially voice) but now that I'm off, my cycle is still a problem for me and I can't afford a hysto. I'm interested to hear how gel works for you, especially being "older" (I'm a bit younger than you, 37, but still getting closer to that range than a lot of the young folks whose experiences are much easier to find).
I've had a lot of success stopping my cycle on a low dose of T, low enough that I don't have a "masculine" amount of body hair, but enough that I'm nice and androgynous looking. A low dose also enormously helps me depression and anxiety. I'm 31, for context.
I’m discerning having my hormones more aligned with my gender and really appreciate hearing from folks who are older - meaning over 35 - since I’m entering a new decade of my life. It’s encouraging to know it’s not too late. It’s also helpful to hear how the cycle comes into play as well. Thanks so much for sharing your journey!
This is so helpful! I’m non-binary and I have PMDD too. I was concerned about hrt, but since I’ve started I have only started to feel better. My pmdd only got diagnosed as recently as 2013 (age 29), but I’ve definitely dealt with it since puberty. However, it got a lot worse in my early 20’s when I started taking birth control. I cannot tolerate any type of hormonal birth control that I’ve tried, and I tried it all. I could say more, but I’m just really grateful to hear from someone who is both nonbinary, taking hrt, and has pmdd. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
a lot of people who cannot tolerate birth control have connective tissue disorders and dysautonomia. obviously i'm not trying to diagnose a total stranger on the internet, but for me, it was very helpful to find the answers involved in understanding connective tissue disorders. estrogen and progestin are both mast cell triggers. only bioidentical progesterone, which is not what the POP is, and testosterone are mast cell stabilizers. this is likely why you respond so poorly to hormonal BC
Dara, I love that you’re so open and willing to share your experiences with us. I am a pansexual cis female and don’t deal with gender issues myself but love watching your videos for all of the information and personal experiences you share. I think it’s great for all people of all genders and sexualities to learn about others’ lives, struggles and triumphs. I love watching you and I love your honesty. I truly wish I could know you irl but am happy to at least have your videos. Thanks for everything!!
Thank you so much for sharing! I'm so used to thinking of hormones as either a transperson or rare disorder type treatment that it's eye-opening to how our endocrine systems play so much to our experiences.
Thank you for talking about this. It helped me feel a bit less alone today. I have a consult tomorrow for a hysterectomy/oophorectomy to treat my severe PMDD because I have tried everything else. But it's pretty daunting given how permanent it is, as well as the fact that they want to do top surgery at the same time so I only have one recovery period. And looking at HRT for the rest of my life is complex because I feel like my goals aren't for full out masculinization, but only taking "female" hormones feels like that will cause dysphoria. It's also just frustrating to be out of other options for treatment. I am no doctor, but from everything I have learned in the PMDD groups, progesterone is typically the hormone us PMDDers are super sensitive to, so if you notice any big mood swings or extra PMDD symptoms, that could be what is going on. I feel like doctors are quick to dismiss PMDD symptoms and usually don't see the connection with what they prescribe (hopefully yours is better than the 5 I have seen), so I just wanted to point it out just in case. I really hope it works for you though. It sounds like you have a good doc and a good plan for going forward. It was nice to hear another non-binary person has similar goals to me. And to not feel so alone in the fight against PMDD.
Thank you for this video. I’m trans mtf (47) and am using the evopad patches for oestrogen and taking androcur as a testosterone blocker. I’ve been struggling with my energy levels for years because of an autoimmune disease, but HRT is really messing with them. Less testosterone in my body makes me feel a lot weaker and leaves me without any energy. Even out of breath sometimes. But then of course there’s the dilemma that I want to feminise my body. Your remark that a ‘right level’ of hormones depends on the person made me realise that maybe I can live my life as a woman with more testosterone inside than the average woman. Just because my body needs it to function and give me enough energy. I’ll look into this. Thanks again. 🙏🏻
Thank you for sharing! I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos in my exploration of myself. Your approachable and accepting demeanor is such a welcome “safe harbor” amid all the animosity out there in the world. I wish you the best on your journey as well!
Thank you for sharing this! I'm afab and non-binary and have recently been having new pms symptoms, so hearing about your experience and the reminder to get my hormones checked is really appreciated!
I'm also taking testosterone and progesterone, but just as female HRT. I have been using progesterone cream which fixed my heavy painful periods but it isn't strong enough to improve my anxiety and poor sleep. I have just ordered natural progesterone capsules and can't wait to try it. Since starting testosterone 3 weeks ago my sleep quality has gotten worse and so I feel even worse than I did before I started!!!! Fingers crossed things will improve soon!!!
Great share. I am very interested to discover how people come to terms with how they are. My hormones are not as troublesome as yours but facial hair growth has frustrated me until I came across a youtube video that just suggested get the right equipment and enjoy your shave ! It's amazing how helpful sharing is on an emotional level as well as practicalities . I am very grateful to people who can be open and calm about it
PMDD is the main reason that I started testosterone. I absolutely could not function at all during the PMS week. It turns out that whenever your body is in any kind of stressful situation, it prioritizes stress hormones over making sex hormones. Progesterone is really important as a neurotransmitter. Estrogen can't pass the blood-brain barrier the way progesterone and testosterone can. So during PMS, progesterone levels decrease, you don't have enough neurotransmitters in your brain, and all hell breaks loose. If you take testosterone, this problem will go away - even before it stops your cycle - because you will not have this huge dropoff in your brain of neurotransmitter. Taking estrogen BC does not help. If you want to stop PMDD without taking testosterone OR birth control, you can take DHEA. Your body can turn this hormone into whatever hormone it needs. I feel very strongly for people who struggle with PMDD but don't want to take either T or BC, so I want you to know there is hope. You CAN stop PMDD without taking testosterone or birth control (or an antidepressant), if that's what you want.
Thank you for sharing this! I was put on birth control early on, too. They had to put me on the highest dose because apparently I was hormone resistant. It really sucked. I have a copper IUD now and am so glad to be off of hormones. Knowing that I'm non-binary kind of makes me wonder if my body was rejecting the hormones for that reason.
While I am by no means trying to say that there is a "trans/nonbinary" gene, there is SOME evidence that SOME gender variant people have a genetic mutation that causes their body to turn one hormone into another. This is likely the cause of things like PCOS or other conditions where DFAB people have uncommonly high levels of testosterone or aldosterone. So perhaps it wasn't that your body was "rejecting" it, but that your body was transforming it to what your body wanted on its own. Pretty badass if you ask me ;)
@@chironOwlglass I've never heard of that. I will look into some research on it. I've acted "like a boy" since I was a toddler. I learned to cover it up in middle school because kids started calling me a dyke and my parents were not accepting at all. Now I'm a confused mess because I've been "faking it till I make it" for 20 years. Anywho, thank you for the info!
I had a similar experience as you. I took BC pills during college, and my mental health was so bad. Granted, there were a lot of elements during that time that might have contributed to my bad mental health, but the weight gain and chest size increase made me feel more negative about myself. When I got on the copper IUD, it was like night and day. My mental health and energy levels greatly improved. I also suspect if my body was subconsciously telling me that the estrogen was the wrong hormones to put in my body since I'm nonbinary.
Hi Dara, I'm new to your channel and just watched this and WOW. I have gone through the same experience almost. I'm 23 years old and also identify as non binary and have always had a kind of high level of testosterone until this year it suddenly dropped off and had very similar symptoms. I have such trouble finding a doctor who believed my symptoms were real and finally was able to also get a prescription for a testosterone gel and it has helped me a lot with making my hormone levels feel normal again and it has helped my gender dysphoria a little too. I am so thankful that you share your journey as I haven't found many people who I can related too through my non binary-ness.
I'm on the same combination of hormones myself! I have a progesterone IUD and use T gel, but I'm taking a lot more T to masculinize. Both have helped so much with my mood.
I’ve heard this happening for a number of people. My own family has the same issues. My sisters, cousins , and aunts. In addition the males also have similar issues. As you may know I clear have an intersex condition that I believe , for me, is the root cause of my gender dysphoria issues. My issues center around germ cell sexual development issues. With one testis being totally a germ cell teratoma and the other testis only maturing to half of normal adult size. Keep in mine the intersex conditions as a whole are about as common as people having red hair within the human population.
So glad for you! And also thanks for sharing your story with us ❤ I've been thinking about starting low dose T for years, going back and forth about it, and people sharing their stories helps me remember that I'm not alone

I guess each body is way different than another! I am an AFAB Pre-Testosterone FTM and have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and I take Medroxyprogesterone every 2 months in order to bring on My T-Rex Week (Monthly) because otherwise, for the most part, I don't have them.
What you said in the beginning about puberty really hit me, its the same expereince for me the only difference is i still dont know 100% whats causing it; im learning about testosterone levels just now, i really want to check those as soon as i can.

I wanna make me another hormones test so maybe i'll get that T gel and so:)
Dara, thanks for sharing. And for your TH-cam channel. Like so many, I always try to find out more about the reasons for being trans. I was born the youngest of seven. In addition, at birth assigned as male. When I was born in the early 60. A lot of pesticides where used. I ones read these pesticides could be the cause of hypospadias. Until my SRS, I suffered from hypospadias. My urethra opening was not in the correct place. It was not wat they call a severe case. A severe case of hypospadias is often identified as an intersex condition. However it troubled me all my live. Never daring too pee standing up. In addition, having a very small sometimes-blocked opening. From childhood, I was always very self-conscious. And unhappy with my body. Until I transitioned in my early 50st. I never knew the condition I had was hypospadias. After HRT, I got worse. I went to an urologist. And finely got the diagnosis. From the medical profession I get no answers. Hypospadias patient organisation do not talk about intersex conditions. Personally, I think a different mix of hormones in my mother’s womb causes being transgender and having hypospadias. I was never as masculine as my brothers were and luckily never had their bald spot on my head. But I wonder about it all.
I have a question for you if you don't mind. Even if I shave my head I look "cute." I have a very feminine face. I've been compared to Betty Paige, for example. I am clocked as straight and cis no matter how I dress. I was even told by my brother that I just don't have "a gay face." Whatever that means. I don't plan to go on hormones or have an additional surgery (I've already had one chest surgery and it didn't really help.) Is there anything I can do?
@6 ! Great advice, thank you! I have a colleague who is AMAB and put a shock of teal color in their hair, and it has greatly increased the number of instances they are seen as gender non-conforming, queer, etc. :)
I really suggest you look into low dose T combined with things like starting and stopping. I was the same - I just looked SO damn feminine and adorable and sweet and I wanted to die. I'm on low dose T and now I look like an uber butch lesbian, which is much more what I was going for.
Can you elaborate on access and affordability of T-Gel? Thinking about the possibility of low dose T and wondering without insurance if this is accessible for a reasonable cost at PP or other free clinics that might offer this? Is it crazy expensive? Wish they sold this at CVS :) Also would you not recommend this as an option for folks just looking for minor aesthetic changes considering it may mess with hormone or other biological levels? If folks don't want much mood/personality change, should they just settle on changing clothing, hair, etc. rather than starting to mess with body chemistry? Just frustrated that I present so female, but don't think a haircut and wardrobe change will do much...
Hey Dara, Curious to hear an update on how T is going. Been thinking about small dosing myself and wondering what you think about folx trying it for a bit and possibly going off it after certain results such as voice change happens. I know you can't pick and choose what happens when you go on T. But instead of being on it long term, what do you think about dosing for a bit and then going off it? Hope you have been well.
@Adulthumanfemale84 Women typically have naturally lower levels of testosterone, falling in the range of 9-55 ng/dL while men fall in the 300-1000 ng/dL range. Jun 4, 2019 When a biological woman is transitioning, she must inject an unnatural amount of testosterone into her body to achieve her goal.

Hey, Dana What do you think about the theory of different kinds of gender dysphoria? Do you think people with Child Onset Gender dysphoria, Rapid Onset Gender dysphoria or Autogynephilia have all different backgrounds and storylines? And do you think young people with Rapid Onset need hormone replacements to feel more comfortable in their body? I'd like to hear an answer of you to this topic - either as a written message or a video. Thank you very much for your time and work!
There's solid research that Rapid Onset Gender dysphoria and Autogynephilia are not rooted in actual science. medium.com/@juliaserano/everything-you-need-to-know-about-rapid-onset-gender-dysphoria-1940b8afdeba www.juliaserano.com/av/Serano-CaseAgainstAutogynephilia.pdf
"Rapid Onset Gender Gysphoria" and "Autogynephilia" are not real. They are concepts that cis people have manufactured because trans people make them uncomfortable. It is only an attempt to police trans and nonbinary people's identities. There is absolutely no validity to the "theory" of autogynephilia, and similarly, "rapid onset gender dysphoria" is really just cis people being shocked that trans and nonbinary people withheld/avoided feelings that were not societally acceptable and then one day decided to be open about them. You're a troll and no one is going to play your game.
@@chironOwlglass , I was just asking out of curiosity, because I have stumbled about these theories. I have never said anything about my stand on this matter, please be careful about the assumptions your are making about me (being a troll)

@6 ! Oooh, I hadn't thought of that! Thank you so much for the suggestion.
I'm on low dose T and now I look like an uber butch lesbian, which is much more what I was going for.
thank you so much for sharing
I used the "Good Rx" app to get mine, check it out!
Serious question. If you have to inject something into your body that is foreign to your natural body, isn't that unnatural?
@Adulthumanfemale84 Women typically have naturally lower levels of testosterone, falling in the range of 9-55 ng/dL while men fall in the 300-1000 ng/dL range.

When a biological woman is transitioning, she must inject an unnatural amount of testosterone into her body to achieve her goal.

Injecting MUCH more than natural levels, is unnatural.
Hey, Dana
What do you think about the theory of different kinds of gender dysphoria? Do you think people with Child Onset Gender dysphoria, Rapid Onset Gender dysphoria or Autogynephilia have all different backgrounds and storylines? And do you think young people with Rapid Onset need hormone replacements to feel more comfortable in their body?
I'd like to hear an answer of you to this topic - either as a written message or a video. Thank you very much for your time and work!
There's solid research that Rapid Onset Gender dysphoria and Autogynephilia are not rooted in actual science.

There's only one kind of gender dysphoria... it's just gender dysphoria.
Did you say you are a therapist? Seeing vulnerable people about gender issues and sharing personal information in public is a severe boundary transgression and unprofessional. You are not a bone fide therapist.
