Perhaps after thousands of years of war they figured it was a terrible waste of life. Sadly for them, the rest of the world hadn't reached that level of understanding.
Let's not miss out the ancient repeating crossbows - Zhu Ge Lian Nu (諸葛連弩) ... a piece of mechanical crossbow which greatly simplifies the 3-stage actions of stringing the bow, loading a bolt and shooting it, all to be accomplished with a single one-handed movement, while keeping the crossbow stationery. Evidence from the archeological excavation revealed its earliest existence could be dating as far back as 400BC, with its design and performance being further enhanced during the Ming Dynasty later.
Xun Lei Chong. A five barrel musket/spear with a battle axe monopod and a shield for protection. Better than the Mughal cannon shields. One of my fantasy novels: "Ghost Army"; is about a hypothetical "Thunderbolt Battalion" manned by volunteer non-Han Chinese and equipped with the Xun Lei Chong. Detective Dee might be smart . . . but these guys are more highly motivated and equipped with force multipliers.
