As someone who religiously plays Fe10, jumping into Fe5 was actually pretty easy apart from the door keys in the final chapter.
Wise men use Dalsin. 25% growth + Ced scroll. Hammers dont hurt when they dont hit.

It's really nice to hear the happiness and passion you have for this game and this project..this is a game I've always avoided playing because it felt daunting. It looks really intimidating to be honest since I've only played FE4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 13. What little I've seen and know is from what I've seen in your Ironman videos. What you and Chaz said about playing blind is true I guess I'll take the plunge sometime soon. It'll be nice to get insight on the game though since I'm not too familiar on the story or characters and my only experience of using Leif and Finn were from FE4. I've really been enjoying the memey intros you've been coming up with for your reverse recruitment videos by the way; keep up the great work and stay chill Mekkah.
It seems like you put a lot of effort on making the guide as ambiguous as possible to avoid spoilers, that's so nice of you. I'll have to bookmark this!
The problem is how many missables it has: if your safie is fatigued before the pan character and you overwrite your save you will never get tina and miss out on unlock AND thief staves, which will save you the problem of using steal/capture/warp/rescue, and even then you MUST warp someone to talk to pan or she will keep using it against you until it breaks and will stay lost and there's no warning you will need safie in that chapter until AFTER it begins so you can't really go back unless you use an older save. And how could anyone forget about running out of locks or staves in the final 2 chapters, and don't give me that "should have saved them" crap cause' no other fire emblem soft locks you like that and the whole game teaches you to keep using staves so of course you'd be running low. No repositioning fucking sucks too.
For me, the most annoying thing is that all stats (expect HP) cap at 20. It wasn't a problem in games like Gaiden, but this one has items that increase growth rates, which make those 20 feel like little

I just wanna say that many years later, I finally decided to play Thracia and used this guide as my main help (plus occasional visits to FEWoD for more specific doubts I had). I beat the game yesterday and I can see why the people who have played it praise it so much. I admit some quirks of the game design didn't age very well in my opinion (staff misses, hit rates capping at 1 and 99, status changes lasting forever--it makes the game easier lol--, side characters who feel well written lack supports to enjoy them more, etc.), but overall I think these are nitpicks and I would give this game a solid 9/10. Tight maps with amazing tools at your disposal to tackle them however you want, with themed objectives that accompany the story, and unique mechanics that you can hardly find in any other entry. Hoping for a remake down the line, hopefully with a harder difficulty, actually! I'd love a challenge.

Just started Thracia earlier this week, I hadn't started it sooner because admittedly its reputation scared me a bit, but this guide helped me overcome that mental roadblock and I'm thankful for that because it's been a really fun and unique FE experience so far
I'm a completionist
Every FE I've played, I played with guides on the side to not miss out on characters/secrets
BUT
I always pick whoever the fuck I want
If a "good unit" (by the general standards) sucks ass, they'll get benched
If a "bad/mediocre unit" surprises me (like Barst rn in FE1), or I like their premise even tho there are better alternative, well I welcome them to the team : Macha got that treatment in FE5, after she got 3 Mov growths before C10

In chapter 2x there is a thief atop a castel holding a lockpick.
You must capture him, but do not release him, he must be held by one of your uints when you end the chapter.
The eyvel and leif conversation hints towards what ur supposed to do (mekkah mentions the conversation)
While Mekkah already mentioned it, it's really important to have a healthy amount of Door Keys, specially if you are playing an Iron Man run. You NEVER have enough Door Keys on an Iron Man run.

Ugh. It's a misquote from a post on an old IntSys forum board, that listed a bunch of Thracia features.
"* If you don’t look in guidebooks, you won’t find special tips, hidden events or hidden items."
All it means is it has obscure, non-essential content, a very common practice back then that didn't have much to do with marketing schemes. Apparently there's some guy that's been running around claiming Kaga wanted to get rich with strategy books (????), but really, that's a gross misinterpretation.
Not that game directors benefited from merchandise like that. Plus, Nintendo maintained an online strategy guide for Thracia anyways, so uh... that money scheme wouldn't have flown very far.
Said forum post had some more interesting announced features like Luck being a hidden stat, regional weapons, and the game originally having 15~20 optional/branched maps, but I guess the guidebook thing is what stuck.

Heard about the Project Exile patch a while back. That was my first introduction to this game and knowing that it's considered very difficult, it caught my attention. Now I want to try it out for myself. I beat FE7, 8, 9, and 10, although it's been years. This guide sounds like a good starting point. I want to go in blind, but having a bit of a heads-up on the basic mechanics sounds useful.
I was just looking for an english translation of Thracia today so this video coming out today is like perfect timing and I'm very excited to play this game for the first time and experience Leif story so thanks for sharing this info.

Just last night I finally (after 9 years on and off) beat fire emblem 4 for the first time (though my translation patch ended up crashing in the end) and I actually just downloaded the Thracia translation patch before watching this! I've always put off playing fe5 until after I've gone through Genealogy, and of course I've always been intimidated by the rumors of the game's wildly unique mechanics. I am really glad you cut this video up into chapter segments to keep the spoiling to a minimum, and really look forward to playing through it on my own alongside this!

Update: I'm at chapter 4x, Asbel triggered a movement star, and proceeded to get himself captured on turn 2 never to be seen again. Game Good
so i just started playing fe5 and man I can already just feel how good of a game of it. its beautiful music, art, gameplay all come together so well. obv the biggest problem is the lack of help boxes and such so vids like this are great.
alsooo the patch contains many QOL changes which are AMAZING and make it easier for people like us.
It's a mixed bag. So many good ideas but held back by objectively awful choices. In chapter 12 there is a bridge hidden in darkness that you need to cross. If you don't bring a method to get across, you are forced to retry. I'm doing it right now and I have to warp leif to seize. Had no idea there was gonna be a bridge.

Hey I really appreciate this guide thanks! I don't like using guides normally because they usually divulge too much info but you hit the sweet-spot of being vague while still being helpful. Probably would have quit the game otherwise.
I'm playing Thracia right now but watched this video long before for entertainment purposes, which is probably the only reason I remember it existing to help me now during my first time beating the game. I am on Chapter 20 as of this comment, and a thought occurred to me - I would actually love to see a 'spoiler *filled*' version of this video. I'm sure it would be far longer and an immense undertaking, but, figured I'd put the thought out there!

I finally beat the game last night. I ran out of Fire Emblem games I have never tried other than Thracia 776 and Three Houses. I watched this video to get some ideas before I started my first playthrough. I felt very good finally beating it. Thanks for making videos like this. I am not a fan of how you need so many door keys. I debated if I wanted to do 24x but I really love Eyvel as a character so I did it anyways. Your approach of letting your thieves get captured in 4 and 4x really was a lifesaver for me. I managed without doing it but it saved a lot of my sanity when I tried a more effective playthrough.
How do you handle chapter 11? Fred the paladin keeps dying to ballistas almost immediately after they spawn. And any unit that wants to unlock the southern doors will get double shot by ballistas and die.
Ballistas in this game are complete garbage and ruining an otherwise fun game. Do i just restart and power level safy so she can have warp at this point? I don't know what else to do.

You will want Lifis outside and your melee fighters mostly inside like Osian, Halvan, Dagdar. Dagdar needs to be close to Fred as he has to flee atop as ballistas double him. All your melee fighters and Leif gradually open the doors as well as Lifis from outside.
You want to prioritize opening the doors leading to outside the castle so Fred can escape!
My party was very small as enemies other than the ballista are not that threatening. I had Osian, Halvan, Dagdar, Shiva, Asbel, Lifis, Safy, and Dalsin to accompany Leif. If you are okay sacrificing a bad unit I let Dalsin get ballista to death to carry Safy safely across.

You forgot the event in chapter 15 where you can get the most plot relevant myrmidon with the unique sword a unique skill by making her talk to a wordmaster that showed up earlier during cutscenes in chapter 14.
That one is annoying to get and so unnecessary I thought it was better to leave it as a fun Easter egg.

I frustratingly find myself struggling most with chapters that others don’t I can’t find resources to help me on them. I had a few problems in Manster but overall wasn’t too bad. Starting Chapter 9 it’s all gone downhill and become significantly more challenging. Chapter 11 keeping Fred alive is luck as far as I know. Gotta love one ballista missing leaving fred to not heal himself then he dies next turn. Really fun when this happens multiple times in a row. Or they go for someone else with one of them and another goes with fred so he won’t heal himself. I did get lucky though and he survived 2 turns to escape after planning a setup to open all doors same turn.
Now I’m on 13 and it’s just ridiculous. Kill the boss to disable ballistas to get the southern villages? You get overwhelmed by northern ambush spawns. You don’t have enough time. Every resource glosses over this chapter like it’s trivial but I need more help.
I’m so mixed on this game. I liked it a lot besides the start of 4x, and the Shiva recruitment in chapter 7 until I learned the power of capture baiting. Now I’m not enjoying it but I’m invested at this point. Wish more resources with strategies existed because I need more than just general information to survive this game.
There is an older guide by someone who... I don't know if he's around anymore. He made a chapter by chapter guide with potential strats and general information about the game and characters as they come up.
Also chapter 13 for me is the hardest in the game

#Thebrigandsdonotmatter Anyhow, thanks a bunch for both this vid and the one where you show us how to exile-patch the game. I tried playing Thracia once completely blind, with only the script translation and no menu one. It was one of my most suffered and yet funnest/funniest playthroughs in Fire Emblem history. Between occasionally not knowing where to go, missing recruitable characters, making dumb decisions, or completing secondary objectives I didn't even know existed (thus unwittingly unlocking gaiden chapters), it was all a blast!
I'm definitely planning on replaying it, properly this time; once I (possibly) obtain AAAA on Genealogy.
Release a single video that's designed to be clicked on multiple times? Mekkkah did it first.

Thracia's 776 infamy is a mix of legitimate difficulties and pure timing. I'm not sure how many reading this were there to experience it, but the timing of Fire Emblem's release to the West really effected the new fan base's view on the series and games in it. How does this relate to FE5? Well from the point of view back then...
1: Emulation scene was different then. Finding, downloading, and using emulators and ROMs was less self explanatory then, leading to far fewer actually playing it.
2: There were no translation patches. This meant people missed out on important dialogue that might warn of reinforcements, point out an item, etc.
3: Experience was limited to the GBA games for most. FE5 is going to be a daunting task if you are limited to a GBA mindset.
4: The internet was younger. There were no dedicated (English) sites. Only some forums and a few geo-cities style sites for it (poor quality).
5: They were still "exotic". This might be hard to look at from this day, but back then the mysterious nature of them only added fuel to the hype fire.
6: The "Japanese = Harder" mindset. While this one isn't without some merit (games being nerfed had happened) it was drastically blown out of proportion.
7: Those who beat it contributed. When every topic in _other_ FE games has "Well in FE5 X is harder, for example..." it adds more fuel to the hype fire.
So you have a fanbase ignorant of the game, who are unable or unwilling to confirm/deny the stories, parroting the word of a few who did tackle it. Pretty soon a stigma starts to grow around it. And because FE5 didn't get a translation patch for a long time, this myth of it being the hardest thing in existence didn't really get challenged too often.
Looking at it retroactively it's pretty stupid, and at this point, especially now that a quality patch is out, it's nothing spectacular. Yes it's certainly one of the harder ones, but it's not some unconquerable behemoth only something as awesome as Joey's Ratata could take down.

I just recruited Xavier without a guide. Jesus Christ that was so tedious. I'm not ashamed to say I used save states for that. A lot of them.
Also, there's a vendor at chapter 12 that sells Wind tomes, really useful for Abel because it's really hard to find Wind tomes mid-game for some reason.
I seriously love this game, it'd be nice if Nintendo were to reach out to the creators of this patch and ask if they can use it in a rerelase of this game for Swtich or something so more people can experience it and support it's creation
Nintendo is too fucking stupid, seriously even sega realized it was a good idea, but if fire emblem was as big as Pokémon, then Nintendo would have taken down all roms and translation patches even though that’s the only way for western players

For the love of naga don’t try to play thracia blind. I recognize mekkkah practically worships this game but even he has to admit this game is cruel to blind players. It’s also not cruel in the super meat boy hard but fair way, it’s cruel in the way where I could see kaga laughing in his office like mekkkah does during the pms. Playing it blind will just leave you frustrated and will probably make you rage quit.

This is the first fire emblem I've played and it's kicking my ass. I think it would take me a year to play through blind.
I played it blind and was fine. Yes it meant I had to retry chapters multiple times, but it wasn't nearly that bad.

If you just accept the fact that you'll have to play certain chapters at least twice it's not that bad. Not knowing the importance of door keys fucking sucks though since even rotating save files doesn't prepare you for that.
As with all Fire Emblems, 776 has some hard chapters, but I would argue 776 has the most tedious maps due to numerous ballistas and reinforcements (especially in certain Gaiden chapters).
But overall, 776 is as difficult as you make it.
If you’re not a completionist - if you don’t care about recruiting every character (especially Xavier) and obtaining all of the rare items (eg, Dragon Lance and Member Card) - this game’s difficulty is not that bad.
And if you’re going to abuse the arena with crusader scrolls, only do it for a select few characters (maybe three or four). Trust me, it’s not needed for most of your characters.
As Mekkah said, calm any obsession you may have with capturing enemies. You don’t need to capture that many.
Basically, take it easy, just relax. I’m not a FE expert, but I beat this game twice. On my last play through, I recruited all available characters and obtained all of the rare items.
At times, it can be especially punishing for blind players, even for people who aren’t completionists, but I think Mekkah’s video is most helpful. Give it a watch.
Thracia 776 is one of my most favorite Fire Emblems. I hope all of you enjoy the soundtrack, characters, battle system, maps, etc. as much as I have.

i did really start blind in thraccia in my first time, i just kill everything and did not know about capturing. i used the old patch and internet weren't so spread in homes in that time, i used cyber cafes to get stuff back there including games and guides. the old patch was way harder to use, you had to either go blind without dialogue or without menues. i had to get lifis so i had to learn about capturing, so i had to use a guide for the basic objectives. but still have to play. it is not a hard game but you have to re-learn a lot of stuff. it is at a leven of dificulty like fe6, ironically I also played fe6 with the old patch. it is really good news to have it now. also fatigue it is a pain to the ass to me.
There is a THIRD option to only look up SOME information, but not too deep! Getting the joys a of blind playthrough while not stumbling in the dark too much in frustrations (as you said at the start Tharcia is not a game you go in expecting to teach you mechanics.....something I found funny enough Engage for all it's tutorials kept one spiritual thing from the Kaga games in NOT TELLING YOU SHIT YOU REALLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD! On one hand, I like it and had a joy discovering shit on my own in this regard, with this one and Engage! On the otherhand, the developers and Kaga get a middle finger for this behavior. But I guess that's the JOY of Nintendo Hard games I suppose so they get my "Grudging" respect! Tharcia 776 I didn't HATE the Fatigue system! I mean the FE games already kind of force you to use different units with limited deployments in that you REALLY don't want to overuse a character and then reach the final chapter to learn OOPS turns out your using THIRTEEN CHARACTERS ALONGSIDE your protagonist and you only used 7 or 8 characters and this is excluding the Protagonist so the remaining four-five are going to be dragging the team down! Especially in a BLIND playthrough! I'll admit, I do SLIGHTLY spoil myself by looking up the FINAL Chapter map! Though only in "how many characters are deployed in it along with the protagonists" as in this way, I do spoil in knowing "I need to pick thirteen characters and STICK WITH THEM! Swapping them out whenever a situation in a limited deployment map requires their expertise IE my bow users are near REQUIRED on maps theeming with Fliers, but Mages are barely worth it on them unless their Dracoknights....or the FE made Wind Magic Fliers "BANES" or in the Tellius games, Thunder Magic for Dracoknights and Dragons! Axe Users if the enemy is fielding ALOT of Lance Users! Riders for Large maps where their mobility will be useful and at LEAST one Armor for baiting and "leading the way!" This is why I'm happy "Boots" are a thing to make them at FITTING mobility! so their not dragging thier feet" Like Pokemon, my team is always balanced to prepare for anything the game throws at me. I have no major strengths....but I have not glaring weakness either!)
I wish the drawbridge in chapter 12 was mentioned. You can easily softlock yourself if you don't have a lockpick/flier/warp and need to restart the map.

Glad I can finally experience the game. For other new players like me, if an enemy captures your unit then they will take all of your units items. I'm the lucky guy with two thieves and no more lockpicks.

I don't really know if I'm posting in the right place, or if I'll even get a reply. I'm copying and pasting this in as many places as possible so I can get a reply, because I know this issue is really niche and there's probably not many people who have ever been in this situation or would even know what to do.
So I just got a game in the mail today. It was the Fire Emblem Thracia 776 Deluxe Pack, it was very expensive. Super excited. For anyone who doesn't know, Fire Emblem Thracia 776 was a game released in Japan only, initially on those Nintendo Power flash memory cartridges that could download multiple games onto that one cartridge. That version of the game is what comes with said Deluxe Pack, and is therefore the one I own now.
Now, normally I believe when you booted up the cartridge, you'd have a menu that would allow you to select which game to play. I don't know if Thracia 776 is an exception though, because the game is so huge that it takes up all of the memory slots on the cartridge. I don't really know if the menu would still come up.
The other reason why I don't know if the menu will come up: the cartridge doesn't seem to work. Whenever I boot it up, I get a black screen. Which is great, the system knows there's something there, but there's no game. I tried cleaning it, same result. I use contact cleanser with a q-tip and canned air to dry it and blow out dust.
So I'm thinking there might be something wrong with my rig. I have other Super Famicom games that I play using my official top-loader model American Super Nintendo. I use an adapter from My Arcade in order to do this, since obviously you can't play Japanese Super Famicom games on an American Super Nintendo.

Basically, I'm just kind of really confused as to why the game doesn't work. Does the My Arcade Super Famicom adapter not work with these kinds of memory cartridges? My other Super Famicom songs work perfectly well with this adapter. I also noticed that this cartridge has the extra 8 or so pin connectors. I think the only other game I own that has these extra pins is my SNES copy of Yoshi's Island. I dunno if that might have anything to do with the fact that the game doesn't work. Yoshi's Island works fine with the adaptor on though. (The adaptor is designed to work with both Super Famicom and SNES games.)
So honestly if anyone can give me any sort of lead, I'd be greatly appreciative. But who knows, maybe I just a bad cartridge. Not that I really mind that it doesn't work. I usually just play it on an emulator so I can play the game in English, and I really just bought the Deluxe Pack for all the cool stuff that came with it. But anyways... I've once before beaten the dreaded chapter 4, so I do know what to expect that far but everything after that I'm blind. Doing pretty well, not a single death so far and both Leif and Dagdar have gotten a movement level up. But next IS chapter 4 so that will likely change...
If anyone reads this, make sure to visit the church in Ch.17A, as if you don't do it, you won't be able to get a certain character in 24x.

I’m real close to finishing the game with the old patch. Fell into the hole of looking too much up on the wiki cuz I didn’t want to miss anything. Maybe with the last few chapters and a new play through with the new patch ’ll be able to go through without wiki.
I did start this blind like a month ago and dear god this game is frustrating, especially the ambush spawns and the rng. I'm at chapter 20 or close, so I wil finish it, but after that... never again.
i'm one of the people that looks up guides for games like thracia, but to the level of Mekkah's guide here - I feel uncomfortable playing a game and not knowing what I'm doing
I like knowing what characters I can recruit and how to get gaidens, but apart from that it's better to see the story and how to get through the map otherwise myself

Love this video. Wish there was a little bit more info about 24x and I think you need a lot more door keys than he recommends, but I can see why people would hate this game playing blind. I really liked the game because I used this video
I think buying 14 is about enough, you still have lockpicks and the unlock staves as well as a couple free Door Keys here and there.
24x is a bitch but there's not much to say on it that makes it more enjoyable. I didn't want to tell people how to trivialize warp tiles.

Finally tried Thracia again after over a decade, got to Chapter 4, got bodied, and I think that's it for me, haha The game is BRUTAL.

Please please please put a disclaimer in chapter 8x if you can (dunno if you can do that afterwards on a TH-cam video). You put a disclaimer to rest the mage in chapter 8 just to make it slightly easier in chapter 8x even though Leif+Flame or Light sword also works, but no disclaimer to rest the knight in Chapter 8 and 8x when you can get his personal legendary sword in the next one? x)
I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else. I even power-leveled him in 8x... this took more than an hour and half or so... fuck man. Enough Thracia for today, I don't wanna redo all this bullshit. I'm going outside.
Great guide for the rest though, really thankful that this exists and it's awesome! It's normal that some things get overlooked along the way, but... fuck. Fuck. What a waste of time that chapter 8x was :( this is especially frustrating because he got insane level-ups all throughout 8x so I fell in love with him and let him get all the XP and he got insane stats. And now he wouldn't be able to get his personal sword. Ouch. I'll redo 8x I guess...

Personally I'd advice to capturing Shiva since Eyvel has the immortality flag on her. Getting an early killing edge helps out Leif a lot.
I think that's just too tedious, plus Shiva starts moving at some point if you take too long. I'm trying not to encourage players to go after every valuable trinket they can find.
I'm gonna throw this here and maybe someone who is also trying to use this guide and play FE5 blind will get this before they suffer the same fate I did:
On Chapter 2x, if you take too long, the "really strong enemy swordfighter" will attack.
So in ch 14 I have to visit 3 Houses? *X files theme intensifies*
