      If you are victimized for "Estafa" in a local province then you can kiss your $$ goodbye. There is NO law enforcement to speak of. Just a few cites for registration or not wearing a helmet! White collar criminals have free reign and all they have to do is pay a little under the table. Any official document can be altered and even notorized for a few pesos. If your a foreigner, I definitely suggest to reside in a metro or somewhere where it's a little more westernized. English speakers are few and far between in a province. Emergency services barely exist and no one is trained to handle. No matter how much financial backing you have if the locals aren't trained or can facilitate a physical emergency then you are sure to die. There are no emergency services, no street signs, residential addresses only neighbors and landmarks.

Having said that twenty years ago I (along with at least 30 other people) was scammed out of $170,000 by a friend/business partner and if the justice system is bad in the Philippines I can tell you that white collar crime justice is even worse in Australia. It’s too much in detail to go into but I can assure you I never got my money back and I can certainly sympathize with this gentleman. My wife had a very small amount in a Philippines bank because she's a filipina. You can't just withdraw the money. Only the bank manager can do that and he was always off, on vacation, sick that day or left early. Then they ask you why you need it. It better be a very good reason they agree with or else you're not getting it. She had to contact an uncle in manila who worked at that bank hundreds of miles away in order to get her money. We're talking less than two hundred dollars..so yes by all means put your money in a Philippine bank. Can't wait for your horror story. It's like a never ending drama book.

    Most people trust far too much. If you stop trusting people, you'll learn that you don't actually need to trust nearly as much as you might think. For example, you don't need to trust professionals (doctors, lawyers, mechanics) to use their services. It's far better not to. With doctors, get a second or third opinion. In all cases you're better off doing your own thinking and research and holding their feet to the fire instead of giving them blanket trust.

    Pea, this is eye-opening about your justice system. Countries that are successful have justice systems that are efficient and actually work. It goes far in explaining why no single mothers can get support for their children and why major global corporations hesitate to engage in direct business in the Philippines and instead, license their operations to native companies. Your country needs serious judicial reforms and the right to a speedy trial, which protects victims as well as the public. It also goes far in explaining why corruption is rampant there because they can get away with it. One thing I would like to hear you cover or explore: I have had several native residents tell me at election time that even though it is illegal to do so, politicians often buy their votes from voters. That might explain why Alice Guo, a Chinese national from what I understand, managed to become a mayor.

    Once my regular girl in Manila (and when I say regular we were together 6 years and even spent time living together in Europe) let me use a spare bank account of hers in Manila to send myself cash for living expenses as I could not open a bank acc there and I hate paying ATM charges. She gave me the ATM card for the acc and the PIN and she never used the account herself for any transaction.
    When we were living together in Europe she owed her dad money so decided to empty the account without my permission and without telling me to pay him. When I confronted her about it she promised to pay me back.
    4 years later when we broke up she gave me back the exact amount that she took and no more. I guess I just lost interest in that relationship.

      On a domestic level, they all eventually stole from and/or lied about me to deflect from something awful they did. I knew my ex-wife's family as friends for over 20 years. Just recently, despite all the bonding and everything I did for them, they made up complete lies about me to the rest of that family. Now, nobody in that family will talk to me. And a few people outside of that family did the same type of stuff in addition to stealing. Forgive if you can, but never forget. I'm glad I brought my Pinay to my home country, away from all that sleazy corruption. Sure, there are less desirables everywhere. But the rate is way too high in the islands (careful with my words).

    • @ARedMotorcycle
      @ARedMotorcycle 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      They'll get mad at you in the islands if a lie is told about you, and then the truth surfaces revealing the person to be a liar. It's awful psychology, but they believe it is your fault that an inconvenient truth about one of their family members arises. "It's your fault that I had to realize that my niece is an ungrateful liar." It's just like when people get mad when you catch them stealing from you or lying to you. Same lowlife psychology. You're wronged, then wronged more for being wronged.

    The legal system is stacked against Foreigners. Eg a British guy finally exited Cebu jail this morning having been found not guilty of selling P600 ($10) of marijuana 3 years ago. Of course besides 3 years in terrible conditions in jail he's spent something like P1m in legal fees and now has to find around P300k to pay the BI for visa overstay fees.

      Thankfully he was found innocent - he probably never would’ve seen the light of day again 🥺

      There is no justice there, you are right the odds are stacked against foreigners.
      That 1.3 million pesos is worth less than £20,000, to be honest I would be angry too but it is a small amount to get free of the jailhouse and free to leave the nightmare

      Yes, this guy was only 24 when arrested so has a hopefully long life in front of him. Sadly William Lee Matteson is now 77 and still there facing a mandatory life sentence charge for growing 3 medical MJ plants in his condo. YES a very stupid thing to do, but he hadn't figured his estranged wife would “incentivise" the police to corruptly obtain a warrant to raid him. Unless someone can get through to Bongbong or Biden/Harris he will die in jail.

    Everything in the Philippines moves incredibly slow. There is absolutely no sense of urgency in the Philippines unless they are driving a car

    One extra caution. The Philippine justice system doesn't move any faster when dealing with "non-bailable" offenses, primarily drug or sex related. If you manage to get accused and charged for such an offense you will spend the entire time it takes for your case to move through the court system in the local jail. Even if you're eventually found not guilty you will spend years in a jail that often makes the actual prison system look like the better option. Just something to keep in mind if you're contemplating anything that might be misconstrued as questionable.
