I love these Hold Outs... What instantly attracted me to them was the Full Flat Ground Blade and the handle shape.. Triad is a Hard Use Lock... only mod i would make to this knife is to take my dremel drum sander and both enlarge and deepen that finger choil in the G10... The Six inch bladed Hold Out One should be available from CS within the next few months...That one will be a keeper for sure.
Great review. I picked one of these up today as a more solid replacement to my Emerson A100. Dollar per dollar you just can't beat this knife. After owning every knife under the sun I had to wonder where this gem was hiding from me. Being in law enforcement on patrol this knife is perfect for everything and the grip is amazing just like on my American Lawman. I look forward to putting this knife through hell and knowing that my fingers are safe :)
Hey man thanks so much for stopping by. Glad to hear you are enjoying it, and it's very interesting to hear you are using this as a duty knife. How do you like the deployment, does it work well for you in the field?
I love the spearpoint shaped blade! I have two CS knives that has the Tri-Ad lock and they are indeed extremely strong. I did wish they would make their thumbstuds truly ambidextrous. Great looking knife, I may have to look into this one:)
@TheDishD This knife has not received a ton of attention but I figured that would be a nice change of pace as I tend to cover some pretty popular knives. I think you raise some valid points. I like 8Cr13Mov but thought something like VG10 or 154CM would be cool - not necessarily on this one but definitely on some of the classics like the American Lawman. An American Lawman in 154CM would really be awesome - even if the price went up to say $70. As always man, thanks for stopping by. :)
Awesome question! I would recommend the rat 1 over the hold out 2 - especially if you want to get some EDC use out of the knife. The ergonomics on the Rat 1 are much more friendly, the rat 1 is easier to open, and I generally think it's more useful for utility work given the blade shape and ergos. If you are looking for a dedicated fighting knife the HO2 might be the better bet, but for a broader role I like the Rat 1 a lot more.
Not sure exactly - I know they make 3 sizes of this knife. Sometimes stuff on Amazon isn't labeled properly. The smaller version is probably the Hold Out III. Might want to double check against the Cold Steel website.
nice review. I have owned the Hold Out III for a month. I made some slight mods to it just to make it more functional in my mind. Just under the clip where the clip comes in contact with the G10 I smeared a little J.B. weld on the G10 and then sanded it down so that it would be real smooth and not tear up my pocket. All of the JB Weld is hidden by the clip so you wouldn't even know it is there. I took a mico file and cut three very small notches in the thumb stud so that I can get a better grip on the stud with my thumb. I also found on one video where someone had left the knife open at a 90 degree angle all night for about seven nights to get the action to soften a little. And then just one more thing. I took some gun bluing and stained the clip so that it is now black and not so noticeable in my pocket. I really like this knife. It is so light and so thin and the overall shape and design really holds my attention. So what do you do if you like the Hold Out III, you buy the Hold Out II. I cant wait to get it.
@rafterrs Thanks man, very interesting to get your thoughts on the steel because I am interested in what others think about it. I need to get a Rajah 1 at some point, I've been hearing a lot of great things about it recently. Honestly, any big blade w/ the Ti-Ad lock is gonna get my attention. Thanks again for droppin by.
@DrWrongPaul $54 is a good price for it. Check out the Voyager series too if you haven't already - I'll be doing a review soon, but they are great knives. Thanks for watchin.
Pleasant, informative video for a great knife. I gave mine to a friend who really liked the no-nonsense design. I just ordered a new one and although I was tempted to go with the 6" version, I picked up the 4", knowing it will probably get more pocket time.
@TheLateBoyScout My pleasure man. I know you have a couple great reviews on the new Voyagers that I enjoyed watching. Cold Steel is definitely heading in the right direction with these new knives!
I agree that Cold Steel should upgrade the steel type in their knives. But having said that, I love Cold Steel products. My tagg video, the one folder for everything, my knife is the Cold Steel Rajah 1. Good video man!
Sorry but I still feel that if there is a weakness with this knife it's the steel. Some people like AUS8, others don't - can't make everyone happy (unfortunately). And I'd be curious to hear what the cost differential would actually be for something like VG10, 154CM or S30V - I think that we perceive the cost of these materials to be much greater than they actually are.
@bobmellon Very interesting Bob, thanks for letting me know. Glad to hear these are easy to take down - I figured as much but I didn't want to say so without confirming. Thanks again for the info.
Cool review, I totally agree with you on a sprint run or just a better grade of steel now and then, Aus 8 is a good working steel and does the job well enough for edc, but I'm not that crazy about it, :) . I do have the spartan and really like edc-ing it, so I guess I shouldn't complain to much, but a different steel is still in my thoughts,,,lol. I'm liking this hold out 2 you reviewing, the over all shape and appearance anyway. Good stuff.
@benmeister332 Oh man, good question. Honestly, I haven't handled either and think they are both equally ridiculous! The Ti-Lite will deploy much faster so if you are looking for a defensive item then that would be my choice.
Great reveiw BR! i hadnt heard to much about the Hold Out before seeing this vid.. looks like it would be a great folder, only thing is the "look" of the folder, i dont mind it but its a lil too "flat/blocky" for me. Aus8 is ok steel, your not going to get better unless you go 8cr13mov (IMHO a much better steel) for the price point, thanks for sharing, hope you have a top weekend, best wishes and take care brother
I've been cayying and abusing a FOX knives Deimos (micarta version) for a week or so now awesome blade. You might want to check it out neptuneknives did a test vid for it, so the lock is really strong despite the look of it. Would be really interested in your opinion on it.
nice review, just so you know to take it apart just remove the obvious torque screws, and the pivot screw, the scales will pop off, there is at least one pin that you cant see from the outside on the interior, very easy, my recon 1 that pin that you cant see it came overmilled in the area of g10 where it sits, so it rattled i had to jb weld it in there, so if you ever here a weird rattle from it thats more than likely it
@interista7878 The Tri-Ad lock might take some getting used to if you aren't familiar with it. I ran into the same issue with the Spartan but found that as the lock broke in it got easier and easier to close. For me, my Hold Out II wasn't as bad as the Spartan, and it broke in pretty quick. My advice would be to keep working that lock - should get better for ya eventually.
didnt realize that it was so big, its a cool knife, i dont own any cold steel, im just so on the fench with them, one day ill pull the trigger on one, im just not a huge fan of aus8 as well
@pyaoliang Dude I really look forward to your thoughts on it. It's a tough knife, should be fun for you. The AUS8 might surprise you - it won't hold an edge as long, but it's quite tough. I'm glad you will get a chance to take a close look and really beat the hell out of this thing. :)
@james460xvryee I watched some of Neptune's vids on it - they look really cool (especially after being pimped by TuffThumbz). I'll see what I can do man, it looks like a great knife. :)
@thomassmyth65 Dude I was actually gonna suggest the lawman but then I deleted that portion of my comment. Yeah that is one of my favorites - can't go wrong with it (although there is an example of another knife I'd like to see in something besides AUS 8...)
@EDCblade Right on man! lol. I have a left handed Military that I'll be putting a vid up on real soon. Someone has to "keep it real" for us southpaws. ;)

Anytime brother! Thanks for the excellent question. :)
@PavlovSandor I definitely see some similarities there, and it's a very nice looking knife. Thanks for watching.

@rainmechanic I totally agree. A bigger choil is a great idea. Might have to pick up a 6" and a 3" - can't go wrong with any of these knives.
@BladeReviewscom Props to you, mate. The lock smoothed out nicely and it's currently my favourite knife. Cheers!
@DrWrongPaul $54 is a good price for it. Check out the Voyager series too if you haven't already - I'll be doing a review soon, but they are great knives. Thanks for watchin.

Thank you, Bill. And sorry for the extremely late reply to your comment.
@greatwf Glad ya enjoyed it!
@MrMAX4400 My pleasure man. Thanks for watching. :)

i am used to EDCing with a older CS ak47 with the auto lock and liners
think i would like this just as much
Just finished watching! Excited to test it out. Going to beat the crap out of that aus8. :). Thanks again Dan!

@1Splat Thanks man. I am totally with ya this is a great knife!
Any chances to get this onehanded open without the thumb stud installed?
@interista7878 The Tri-Ad lock might take some getting used to if you aren't familiar with it. I ran into the same issue with the Spartan but found that as the lock broke in it got easier and easier to close. For me, my Hold Out II wasn't as bad as the Spartan, and it broke in pretty quick. this is like a heavy duty benchmade 530. well a larger version too. i like the looks too.
didnt realize that it was so big, its a cool knife, i dont own any cold steel, im just so on the fench with them, one day ill pull the trigger on one, im just not a huge fan of aus8 as well
would you recommend this or an ontario rat-1 as a medium to heavy use edc/defence/tactical knife?
@1Splat Very cool man. The other comanies playing in the $30-60 range really need to look out. Cold Steel has an extremely competitive formula here.
Which is better? The 6'' Hold Out. or the 6" Ti-lite?
you should check out the holdout 1, 6 inch blade. Its a beast.
@BladeReviewscom good to know, ive always like the lawman
great review sir, another interesting blade from CS.
@racerx32 Thanks man - yeah I think what I meant to say was, if Cold Steel offered these in a better steel, people would buy em.
@LookieChannel Thanks man - my pleasure!
@BladeReviewscom awesome im saving up for a left hand sebenza but its going to be a long time before i can get that
@BladeReviewscom yeah i am going to get it, that shape is just to much to resist
Like the one for the ti lite
It screws directly into the aluminum backspacer.
@BladeReviewscom Thanks. I'll keep at it then.
Thanks man, take care.
@hugo2x Thanks my friend! Totally agree.
@enjoiorange Yeah man, this is a very nice knife. I think you would like it, especially if you already know what Cold Steel is all about.
I think it should have the wave feature
@oromoto I totally agree!
@darkchild57 Yeah the blade on this one is really sweet. Totally agree w/ the thumbstuds. I'd say this one is well worth looking into. :)
@DrWrongPaul I agree man! (sorry for the delay in replying back lol)
very nice design, thanks for sharing
@interista7878 Glad it worked out for you man! Enjoy!
That would be cool!
Which Steel is better CTS BD1 or CTS XHP ?
XHP
It's a nice knife but mine is almost impossible to close. I'm powering down on it with both thumbs and just barely get the job done. No joke.
@RECONDO101st Thanks man!
@james460xvryee I watched some of Neptune's vids on it - they look really cool (especially after being pimped by TuffThumbz). I'll see what I can do man, it looks like a great knife. :)
@BladeReviewscom True that! :)
Someone has to "keep it real" for us southpaws. ;)
It's a monster man, might be a little too much blade for me. ;)
$186AUD/135USD here in Australia.
Bro Brah I know.. that's the point -- things are expensive here.
@thomassmyth65 Definitely worth checking out their knives. I've handled a good number of them and they have yet to disappoint me with a product.
power to the leftys lol
