I own one of these lenses, used it almost exclusively on my last vacation. I think its flexibility is its strength. I was on a safari at the end of the trip and the lens made it easy to capture photos of animals from a distance.

Hi Cris! Thank you very much for doing a great review on the Tamron 18-300! You just sold one! I just purchased an XT3, and have been looking for a lens just like this for it. When I used to shoot a Nikon D70s, I had Tamrons 18-200, and absolutely loved it. I expect I'll love this one the same.

I'm considering this for Urbex photography. A lot of places I go have limits as to where I can physically go without putting myself in danger, so a higher zoom will help with that. And not having to change the lens in dusty, dirty environments is a massive added bonus.

I recently bought one of these in Sony emount. I have several fast prime lenses that I use for specific shooting situations. But, the 18-300 is on my camera all the time. It's an excellent all around lens that works well for just about any impromptu shooting situation I find myself in. A very useful lens and well worth the price.

XT-5 user here for the last year. I have been shooting Nikkor glass via a Fringer. Great stuff, but while my NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR is a FINE lens, combined with the Fringer is a heavy, unbalanced beast. An awesome looking one for sure, but tiring when working street and events.
This is my first native X fit lens, and MPB just sent me one that was in the OEM box and that I could not tell a difference from unboxing new. It's as light as my beloved NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR (actually a bit less without the Fringer) and is balanced perfectly.
Sleek (almost too much so) and the focus is instant! The zoom ring is a bit stiff, but that's OK as I sure won't worry about lens creep. And a very big surprise for me (something that no one seems to mention) is that at a full 300mm extension, there is ZERO wiggle or slop!
You are right about the construction feel. Metal has its own aura--but all plastics are not created equally. I feel the plastic--but it has a nice dense, solid, well-made feel. Not as substantial as the substance of metal barrels, but a hell of a lot lighter to tote around!
I think that this one is a keeper...

Thanks Cris! I travel with a 3 lens setup, so this is probably not ending up in my kit. I would travel with a 23 f/1.4 or 35 f/1.4 lens, a Sigma 18-50 2.8 Zoom, and either the Fuji 55-200 or 70-300 lens (mostly the Fuji for its faster aperture). At the moment I have the Fuji 18-55 and 35 mm f/2, and looking at the Fuji 55-200 to complete my travel kit :)

Thanks. Well you really do gain the extra length (up to 300mm vs 135mm). They are very similar to be honest but I’d root for Fujifilm in terms of image quality (due to the size and versatility of the Tamron lens) but for an « all in one » type of lens I’d take Tamron. Ok I got this lens today. It will not be the most sharpest lens but sharpness is better than I expected. I actually never buy super zooms, mostly primes. But hauling with a bag full of lenses is not a picknick either. With good light and ISO at 800 the shutter speeds are high enough. Even at F8. Great adition to my Fujifilm gear.

    • @cris_photography
      @cris_photography  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi there, thanks for your message.
It very much depends on what you want to do with your lenses and the type of photography. The 17-70 has a better aperture throughout but the 18-300 is much more versatile in well lit environments. The 70-300 is a very nice and well made lens but if you need to go wider you’ll have a problem. You need to decide if you a) need a wider aperture and b) what type of framing you’ll need to have and if you need wider than 70mm. Hope that helps take care

  • @maciejstrzelczyk1990

I think it's a great lens for landscape photographer because you don't need wide open ap. like 1.8 - 2.8. You need f8 and more usually (f11, f16). So if you connect old body like X-T3 with this lens on a tripod - you'll achieve great results!

Just ordered this lens and having switched from Olympus, Nikon and, here it comes, Leica Q2 ( ?!? ) the reason I ordered it was as you say in the video, to try out what I prefer in focus length. What do I like? In my life, how do I shoot? What is it that I need? My oh my, I've got grandchildren now…
Now, you might say having owned a host of cameras and lenses, shot more pics than I care to count, I should know what style, what preferences, what feel in a picture I want. Not to mention that I sold my Leica Q2 due to the fact that I found myself trapped in the focus length. I know, I know, but that's a personal experience and you know… it just wasn't me, was it? But my god, what a camera! Jeeezus…
So having just switched to Fuji X-T4, I have to reinvent myself. And this is a lens that lets me explore what I want from a lens and what focus length I use. Or tend to use. To be creative. To find that childish, youthful kid in me that lent my dads camera to just play with… and now and again actually got a decent picture doing it.
( And for all of you out there that's focusing on tech, “searching for sugerman” was partially shot with an iPhone. It went and got an Oscar. And more photographers than just Todd Hido uses one now and then. So have fun! Just shoot some pictures 😉 )

If you’re set to 6.3 there won’t be any change. However if you’re set to a lower aperture and you zoom, the aperture will vary as you zoom in (since it can’t open as much when it’s zoomed in)

    • @professionalpotato4764

Excellent question. Unfortunately I have t tested the 50-230mm so can’t tell you. However and that been said, i would tho l the Fuji lens might be a tad sharper (as for most of my Fuji prime lenses) but that is not a tested opinion. Might do a video comparing the 2 - why not.

    • @paoloreyes2397
      @paoloreyes2397 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I would personally get the XC 50-230mm. This is my favorite. Even I have the 70-300mm.
18-300mm becomes out of focus and extremely blurry. 50-230mm is surprisingly not like that even if it is varifocal. The IOS is even better with the 50-230mm than the Tamrons. The only downside of the XC 50-230 is the plastic mount. While the Tamron 18-300 has a versatile range. Good for vacation and minimalist. But quality wise overall, video and photos, I would NOT get the Tamron.
As for sharpness, Tamron lack in this area as well. For quality photos, I would not go for the 18-300mm. But for vacation, fast and light travel, 18-300mm is good if you dont care about photo quality.

@@cris_photography Thanks for checking. That is super surprising. Does the 90mm focus breaths like crazy? I see the camera in the picture is bigger from the Fuji lens. So in reality at this distance the 90mm is more like 120mm? Also, were the exposures the same (same ISO, shutter speed?). Other possibility is that the Tamron is not truly a f/5 at 90mm.

@@cris_photography Thats is the point I want to use this 18-300mm with X-E4, Want to see how good is the OIS for walking!

The XT4 has a great IBIS plus the VR of the Tamron lens I believe the combo will be good. Not the lightest though (it’s a zoom lens and you’ll want to keep the lens at 18mm for vlogging)

Ummm, you are the only one that gave this lens a good review and the Fuji 70-300mm a bad...

Fujifilm is also making the same lens but with better image quality

No they don’t. 18-135 or 70-300. A 18-120 is expected this year too. Where did you see a Fujinon 18-300? Am VERY curious!

@@cris_photography yes sorry your right a new 18-120mm by Fuji will be announced very soon!!! And the tamron definitely looks great but the tamron I believe is a lens that can be used only on a bright sunny day only especially at the longer focal length as it’s aperture doesn’t let much light in

@@Snapit551 Well there are no details about the Fuji 18-120 lens yet, hopefully it does come out this year. Yes obviously the Tamron is not a "fast" lens but it's a great all in one option. It can also be used at night if you know how. Mine should be arriving very soon, hopefully tomorrow!

Nice Amit! Yes it is great for all purposes. Would not trade my 18 and 56 for weddings but hey, if you need all those focal lengths in one lens it’s per-fect! 😀
      Take care

As you can see what? This was the worst comparison of lenses I have witnessed on youtube.

  • @Audimann

Ok I got this lens today. It will not be the most sharpest lens but sharpness is better than I expected. I actually never buy super zooms, mostly primes. But hauling with a bag full of lenses is not a picknick either. With good light and ISO at 800 the shutter speeds are high enough. Even at F8. Great adition to my Fujifilm gear.
