When installing a battery the positive cable should be installed first. Negative removed first, installed last. This keeps the positive from accidentally touching a ground and shorting.

Because there are so many computer-dependent functions, as soon as you disconnect the first terminal, some of the memories are wiped, You should have a back-up power source connected while changing the battery.
For the new battery installation, the negative terminal should never be connected first. If the wrench slips while connecting the positive terminal and contacts metal while still on the terminal bolt you'll short the system and possibly damage some circuits. It's always positive, then negative.

I use a trickle charger to charge and recondition the battery and the battery may last a long time before replacing it.

Dude, charge it before testing, and fully charge before replacing. Those Motorcraft batteries are good for 5-7 years.
