  • Step back in time to the pivotal Stage 13 of the 1991 Tour de France, where cycling history was rewritten before our eyes! Join us as we witness the emergence of new contenders and the dramatic shift in the peleton's dynamics. From Greg LeMond's valiant defense to Miguel Indurain's stunning rise, this stage marked a turning point in the sport's landscape. Don't miss out on this thrilling chapter in Tour de France lore! 🏁
Greg LeMond was defending winner of the Tour de france and felt confident he would win again in the 1991 TDF edition.
Greg LeMond was among the leaders going into the Stage 8 individual time trial, and eventhough he was riding extremely well, and his effort had put him into the yellow jersey as leader of the general classification, he lost eight seconds to the young Miguel Indurain.
Greg Lemond kept the yellow jersey for the next four days until Stage 12, where he struggled on the first climb and finally broke on the Col de Tourmalet and lost a lot of time to Miguel Indurain, Claudio Chiapucci and lost his yellow jersey to LeBlanc.
He continued to race, but during stage 13 the next day, it was obvious that something had changed in the peleton. Greg Lemond struggled immensely and was unable to challenge, and lost a lot of time again.
Greg Lemond finished the 1991 Tour seventh overall.

This stage was like the formal announcement of the EPO era of cycling.

that day did seem like hell for Lemond. RIP Paul Sherwen.

His career was over by this point. Other riders trained better and were stronger than him. There seems to be a pervasive legend that Greg was the greatest ever and that he was unbeatable. Some people need a reality check. His Palmares doesn’t come close to many other riders in his era. Just look at Fignon’s wins in comparison. Even 1989 is debatable. What kind of meds was Lemond on to help him recover from his hunting accident?

@@jasrod2012 never said he was the greatest ever, if you think Chiappucci was clean in 1991 you are de luded. Also, what other riders had a better palmares in his era? Kelly in the classics but not in the Grand Tours? Fignon never won a world championship but was better in the classics and also won the Giro? Lemond was the best rider of that era, along with Fignon and Kelly.

You’re forgetting that Fignon also placed third in the Vuelta and even won the combination classification. Greg was at best a two trick pony.
      What about Hinault?
If you think anyone was clean including golden boy Greg you are luded!

Stephen Roche also comes to mind.

Stephen Roche was better than Lemond? For what? 1987? What did do outside of 1987?

Greg was not beaten by better riders, especially the Spanish as we know they were all drugged to the eyeballs, the really dark days of epo had begun.

Indurain and Chiapucci doped to their eyeballs.

Pedro Delgado and Lemond raced clean and they should have dominated that day. Fignon was doped up too and wanted revenge for what happened in 89
