We’re not asking you, we’re telling you that you were wrong. A&M is a bad job right now, you just don’t know what makes a tier 1 job. Even Bama can be a bad job, Texas used to be a bad job.
My take on A&M's hire of Mike Elco is very positive. I've watched him coach a lot of games and have found him to be a great in game coach! He makes good adjustments on the fly that produces results. Some coaches cannot do that. He also is a great judge of talent!! I wish the team I pull for could have landed him. A & M will prosper the first season. They have the financing to recruit well and to work the portal. If Mike could take a team like he inherited at Duke and turn them into a legit competitor against anyone, then he should be able to turn A & M around quickly!! I hope the cupboard is not to bare. If it is, the portal should be a great help to find good seasoned players to start. Give him one good QB and he will win very soon. POMO One more note. Josh Pate is the very best at what he does. There isn't a close second to even think about! Keep it coming!
So, A&M fans are happier about a guy who just finished 7-5 in the ACC and lost 23-0 to Louisville than a guy who also finished 7-5 has had two 10 win seasons at an SEC school with 0 five star recruits and beat Louisville ? 😂 Typical A&M fans
Look, as a Duke fan I'm sorry to see Elko go, but we'll hire another good coach. I'd love to see someone come up who has won at the G5 level. Now, for Elko. A &M hired a good coach. He'll be a consistent seven to eight game a year winner. And that's about it. But I don't see him winning championships. Just look at the neighborhood he's in. Gonna be tough. But I do see them becoming more consistent!
Texas A&m is the one football program in the country that looks in the mirror and sees an elaborate beauty queen.... When in reality they look like the girl next door
Jimbo fired for 7-5 in sec. Answer hire Elko who’s 7-5 in the ACC. Aggies won’t ever get past 8-4 bc of their administration not bc of their players of coaches.
I'm a two-school fan (which makes me part-pariah, lol) and follow Tennessee and TAMU. My wife is a Wildcat, and I've watched UK football very closely during the Stoops era. He has done some great things for the football team of this basketball school. I think that he is a great coach for the tools that he has been given, as he alluded to after the UGA game. I posted on TexAgs X my thoughts on Stoops and my hopes that he would do a good job if he came to TAMU, and my post was taken down. They had DEFINITELY decided that they didn't want Stoops, and they didn't want anything vaguely resembling support for Stoops to appear. Still, I'm excited for Elko. I think we are headed into brighter days. Gig 'em!
Kirby was very much a part of Alabama's championship teams and went on to take Georgia to a national championship game in his first 2 years on the job. Now he has that team going for their 3rd consecutive championship. Sounds like a grandslam hire to me.
Even though Elko was A&M's 3rd or maybe 4th choice, this is the best hire they could have done. Not a bad hire, but whether he can get the Aggies back to national prestige is still up in the air, even with all the good players they have. Defense is already strong enough (also Elko's strong suit), but the offense is suspect (even with Petrino around).
Premier is correct. If not, we would be struggling like Texas to get all the 5 stars! Elko makes our recruiter even stronger cause no one liked to listen to Jimbo Fisher talk.
Yeah, this is one of the "elite" jobs. One that was so elite that they hired a lifetime average coach, only to dump him in a few hours. And then they hire the coach of Duke! Keep on dreaming about those "names you wouldn't believe" that are interested in this 2nd tier job.
He was 22-2 at Utah. Undefeated (I think) in his second year and won a BCS game prior to being hired at Florida. I think that counts as a "grand slam."
Brian kelley...won championships at grand valley st...succesfull at central michigan...took cincinnati to a new yrs day game...took ND to a national championship game.and the playoffs...and an seccg game in yr 1 at LSU
Aggies now "What a great hire, I think he is a great fit" Aggies in three to four years "He's got to go, that sorry Son of ****** can't win a game". Typical of now days see it in business its all about instant satisfaction. 🤣😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Kalen DeBoer turned out to be a home run hire at Washington. But I don't think anyone envisioned it at the time - certainly not nationally from a media standpoint
Have a couple question marks but he should be a solid hire. Whether that’s good enough for Texas A&M remains to be seen. I also think that the jury’s still out on a couple guys Josh mentioned because of a small sample size.
Stoops wouldve been a good hire. He has done an amazing job for Kentucky, considering its a basketball school with low expectations and a ceiling on its football program.
As a Sooner fan, love Pate. Josh sticks to facts and stays rational! Nothing in life comes easy. Coaching greatness isn't purchased it develops and grows organically.
@@sergiorios1596at a high level? Go look at his numbers as defensive coordinator his teams were ass on third down and in the red zone. The expectations at Duke are way lower than the ones at A&M, they expect titles at A&M and he just doesn't strike me as the type of coach built to recruit the types of players at A&M who can win titles 🤷
While as a Tennessee fan I thought it was funny, I thought the same as you. Anyone who can put down two 10 win seasons at Kentucky is most likely a good hire. Great? Probably not, but at least good. I thought he'd be better than Jimbo. Elko is a decent hire too.

Keep up the great work Josh...your much needed an allways keeping it real man....
He's saying you can't name "Grand Slam Hires" and defines it as a coach who had won championships at a previous school. And the irony is A&M already HAD one in Jimbo Fisher. Which proves the point that having the championship on your resume doesn't give you a special kind of magic that an up-and-coming coach doesn't have.
The only reason why they take the job 😮is cause the huge amount of money 💴 they throw , this is why the Aggies r never gonna be contender again in the sec , should had stay in the big 12 , try to go somewhere where they don’t fit , the shirt is too big 😮
Grand slam hires. Alabama hired Saban, South Carolina hired Spurrier (maybe South Carolina hiring Holtz). Florida hiring Meyer. Perhaps UCF hiring Malzahn However, I agree the idea of Grand slam coaches is rare. DZ
Elko was the best hire for Fisher. Since he left we tanked. Will he be the awnser year one? I don't think so. But the reason we had the defense we have was because of Elko. Elko, Robinson should be beautiful, I'm not sure petrino will stay.
If we can get our offense to be functional, then we have a shot. Defensively (minus the secondary) we have been pretty solid. But the offense has been holding us back these past 3 years.
Urban Meyer to Ohio State was a grand slam hire.

Lol 😂funny but so true!
Elko was always a Top 3 running candidate. We LOVE the hire in Aggieland.
A&M is a premier college football program. Always liked them and hope for success with there new coach.
Premier?? Lol ok
What is your definition of premier? How many premier programs are there? They aren’t even the premier school in their state.
Premier is correct. If not, we would be struggling like Texas to get all the 5 stars! Elko makes our recruiter even stronger cause no one liked to listen to Jimbo Fisher talk.
Great point on searching for “Grand-Slam” hires, they are rare and improbable. Go for hungry to win and able to build a coaching staff and program.
Yeah, this is one of the "elite" jobs. One that was so elite that they hired a lifetime average coach, only to dump him in a few hours. And then they hire the coach of Duke!
Keep on dreaming about those "names you wouldn't believe" that are interested in this 2nd tier job.
Urban Meyer was also a "grand slam" hire. He won at Florida before being hired at tOSU.
He didn't go directly from uf to tosu. He retired from coaching when he left the gators. Health issues. Is a slight difference.
Meyer went 17-6 at Bowling Green, 22-2 at Utah, and 65-15 at Florida before retiring "for health reasons" in 2010.
He was 22-2 at Utah. Undefeated (I think) in his second year and won a BCS game prior to being hired at Florida. I think that counts as a "grand slam."
@@phillipmetzger6945Utah -> Florida isn’t a lateral move. That’s not what anyone’s talking about.
He retired because of health issues.
Great hire 👍
Thanks for bringing up Jim as a home run hire. He needs the good press he can get.
Jimbo. He was a grand slam hire - championship coach. They had him. And they couldn’t do it.
Jimbo was a fraud. Outside of 2 good seasons at FSU he was a mediocre coach.
Not with the way FSU was going
As a ND, not psyched to play aTm next 2 years
Brian kelley...won championships at grand valley st...succesfull at central michigan...took cincinnati to a new yrs day game...took ND to a national championship game.and the playoffs...and an seccg game in yr 1 at LSU
What about Urban Meyer?
Legendary gig'em
Pick a fit? Like Sark at Texas?
Aggies now "What a great hire, I think he is a great fit"
Aggies in three to four years "He's got to go, that sorry Son of ****** can't win a game".
Typical of now days see it in business its all about instant satisfaction. 🤣😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
“Don’t give me Lincoln at Oklahoma, cuz he didn’t do anything there…” TRUTH!

Gotta say, I’m of the same mindset as Josh here.
Jimbo Fisher was most definitely a flashy hire. Look how that turned out😂😂
Hiring Jimbo Fisher WAS a grand slam hire… proving A&M can do it. It didn’t work out, but at the time, it was huge.
Great hire
Kalen DeBoer turned out to be a home run hire at Washington. But I don't think anyone envisioned it at the time - certainly not nationally from a media standpoint
That’s crazy. Dude said he was excited about a Mike Elko press conference.
Stoops can win 7-8 at Kentucky. He could win big at a and m. Elko will flush out in 3 years.
I would not be thrilled if I was an A&M fan.
I am. You’ll see. Elko was great when we had him before.
Pate always makes so much sense!
So Josh said A&M is a keystone program and they can get whoever they want - everyone disagrees - they hire MIKE ELKO - “KEYSTONE”
Have a couple question marks but he should be a solid hire. Whether that’s good enough for Texas A&M remains to be seen. I also think that the jury’s still out on a couple guys Josh mentioned because of a small sample size.
Great choice, better fit than Stoops
Stoops wouldve been a good hire. He has done an amazing job for Kentucky, considering its a basketball school with low expectations and a ceiling on its football program.
Kinda like Duke
As a Sooner fan, love Pate. Josh sticks to facts and stays rational! Nothing in life comes easy. Coaching greatness isn't purchased it develops and grows organically.
Grand Slam Hire: Chip Kelly at UCLA when the deal was made. Didn't turn out to be grand slam results, but it was a huge signing at the time.
Thank you for the level headed common sense analysis
Ryan Day is a great hire if you wanna take a program and leave it right where it is. It won't get worse, but it won't get better either.
Ohio St. might be the best he can do with them, but that doesn’t mean his ceiling at A&M is 7-5.
Ryan Day would instantly make A&M way better. But why would he ever go to a worse program?
Elcko will do just fine. He will go 9-3 like those who have come before him.
How about Brian Kelly to LSU
You give stoops that talent and money and he would rock it.
Urban Mayer to OSU, Jim Harbaugh to Michigan, Erickson to USC, some back in 90s Holtz and Spurrier but failed.
Coaching at Duke is not the same as coaching at A&M. This will not go well.
Your point would stick if it wasn’t for the fact that, Mike has coached for multiple years at A&M at a high level.
How come people reacted so harshly to stoops he’s done a good job at Kentucky
While as a Tennessee fan I thought it was funny, I thought the same as you. Anyone who can put down two 10 win seasons at Kentucky is most likely a good hire. Great? Probably not, but at least good. I thought he'd be better than Jimbo. Elko is a decent hire too.
Simple: Stoops was getting $9 Million/year at Kentucky. A&M just agreed to pay Fisher $76.6 Million between now and 2031 to leave.
Because he’s got too much in common with Jimbo 😴
All this. All this. And yeah, you could lump Jimbo into the Grand Slam hires that didn't work out all the way.
Great comments...an a great hire hire for
A+m....welcome back to the meat grinder...the only other grand hire you were talking bout ..long ago..which of course is not now....but would have been
Lou Holtz from Norte Dame-- to-- south
Carolina..in tha day that was a big hire...
Keep up the great work Josh...your much needed an allways keeping it real man....
Don’t know why but would love if Gary Patterson were to get the call from Elko to run the defense at A&M. That would be lethal.
Okay... this is the funniest one this year. "This quarterback drop back is brought to you by..." LMAO!!!
Congrats Coach Elko. 👍
KY just beat Louisville. Duke scored ZERO points against Louisville. Good luck.
Dan Lanning to Oregon was a Grand Slam past the parking lot.
DId Oregon know it was a GRAND SLAM HIRE beforehand?
Urba Meyer: Grand Slam.
❤What a great video! Love “SEC Shorts!” ❤
You lost a lot of credibility in this search. You made us think a lot of interest in this job. Duke was 7th place in Acc.
Was waiting for Riley...Am a USC guy but correct,,
The only reason why they take the job 😮is cause the huge amount of money 💴 they throw , this is why the Aggies r never gonna be contender again in the sec , should had stay in the big 12 , try to go somewhere where they don’t fit , the shirt is too big 😮
I don’t think it’s that the grand slam hire doesn’t exist. It’s that we never really know who it is.
Ohio State getting Urban Meyer would be one. On paper, A&M getting Fisher was thought to be one at the time.
Grand slam hires. Alabama hired Saban, South Carolina hired Spurrier (maybe South Carolina hiring Holtz). Florida hiring Meyer. Perhaps UCF hiring Malzahn
However, I agree the idea of Grand slam coaches is rare.
