Urban Meyer to Ohio State was a grand slam hire.
Urban to A&M wouldve been
True. Didn't SC Hired Spurier off Florida years back?
I don’t think it was at the time. He was being accused of creating toxic locker rooms at UF. He had to take several leave of absence.
@@getinit56 Spurrier coached the Washington Football Team in the NFL in between UF and SCAR.
Spurrier was doing media for a few years before he went back to coaching.@@getinit56
As an Aggie, I dont understand going to get the consistent 1 or 2 runner up in the East. Thank goodness for the Elko flip. Your right, not flashy, but this guy fits the culture of Aggieland.
Elko is a good damn hire.
yes he is.....sad Duke fan here...
A&M needed a solid coach who could hold onto the current talent while cleaning up the cracks in the program. If we can get a solid OC Elko could have immediate success here
Love this show. Love you Josh. You guys make so much sense and keep college football as wonderful as it is.
There were many Tennessee fans feeling underwhelmed with the Josh Heupel hire, yet now, most will tell you he was the right hire and has the Vols trending upward for years to come. Don't let this 8-4 season fool you after 11-2 last year. Most knowledgeable fans knew that this year was going to be a down year, but 8 wins in a down year is remarkable. I say this to back up Josh's point that Mike Elko is not a splash hire, but he could turn out to be a grand slam hire and with the talent A&M has this could be a quick turnaround whereas Tennessee is still trying to build a solid roster thanks to Jeremy Pruitt's train wreck 3 years.
Someone with actual, rational, and a brain in the comments on a TH-cam video. My man you are as some would say a unicorn lol. I’m a Tennessee fan and all the talk at the end of last year was how this year was going to be a down year. How much of a down year? no one really knew but a down year, or a step back year nonetheless. Now that the season has happened, there are actual Tennessee fans wanting to fire. Josh Heupel. completely mind blown when everyone seem to be on the same page at the end of last year, going into this year. You were also spot on about not everyone being extremely excited about his hire. I was one of them but overtime you can see where we are headed. Also, thank you are correct in thinking this could actually work out for A&M.
Coach Mike Elkins is very solid football coach, and that’s what A&M needs.
He is another acc loser. He will be fired in four years.
No. You don’t fire jimbo and hire this guy, that’s a step back
@@naswhat6223jimbo was hot garbage, played extremely passive
@@naswhat6223Nice causal fan comment. Thanks
@@SignalCorps1 cry some more 🤡
If you put Mike Elko, and Mark Stoops in a room could you tell them apart?
😂
Both of them could afford to "drop" a few!
Aggie is saying that the difference is that Elko can win next year without rebuilding.
Big thing with Elko is he recrutied a good chunk of the players and brought in Elijah Robinson. Hopfully he makes E-Rob the DC, finds a good Olinr coach and looks into OC. He was ny pick from the get go and good to see him back at A&M
Excellent hire Elko in 6 years will win a SEC Championship and Natty with Elko with all the facilities and Recruits that he built the number 1 class absolutely Gigem Aggies
Nailed it. This is a good, not great hire. A solid base hit. Maybe he can stretch to extra bases.
Welcome aboard Coach Elko. Happy to have you.
Elko not the person for A&M. Smart man, takes the job and if successful rides the financial pony for a while. If not they buy him out and he takes the buyout and retires????? Next old timer that will do the same thing is Brian Kelly at LSU. If he does not win a Natty next year he is gone. The old coaches ‘whom get these out of normal contracts know how to play the financial game.
@@pitchshot2868 I agree with you. I hope he's successful, but I expect to be here again in 3-5 years.
I think Mike Elko was a good hire. He recruited well at A&M. The players love him and I think he’ll do a good job
Careful-Anytime I hear “The players love him”, I immediately see big red flags. But this is the first time I have heard anyone say that, so maybe it will be OK?
He is also familiar with the university, and the returning seniors will be able to vouch for him. He's a very stable hire that will limit the number of resulting transfers, and be able to recruit well defensively.
Elko has been my number one from the start. The guy can coach football and winning fixes everything. Ross Bjork hired Schloss and now Elko. Let's play ball!
Woodward, not Bjork, hired Buzz right before he left for LSU. Ross botched this entire coaching search and should be fired immediately.
You are 100% correct. Thanks! I do think Schloss is a great hire and the football HC hire was a goat fuck but in the end they got it right in my opinion. Time will tell.@@texasaggie6287
Congrats to Texas am and Elko thats a great hire!
As a TN fan we a take limbo jimbo in Knoxville as a recruiting coordinator or some but idk if we rlly want him coaching anything too much
You didn’t mention Jimbo Fisher as a Grand Slam hire 😂 He is a championship winning coach…and A & M landed him…then fired him still owing him $73million guaranteed.
It was a slam hire at the time. But the specs of the extension after ‘20 was the mistake
I should hope the athletic director who agreed to such a ridiculous contract is no longer the athletic director.
Well it was at the time. He also recruited the best recruiting class ever which just added more to the hype. Guy just couldn’t get it done on the field
@@josephc28He’s at LSU
@chillxxx241 hired a baseball coach won a title.
Hired a wbb coach won a title.
This is a hire that makes a ton of sense for Texas A&M, he just needs to go out and keep a lot of those big name guys that they recruited from jumping into the transfer portal.
It’ll come down to who he has as an OC. The defense is there and has been there. Getting the offense going is what has been killing us. I’m excited for this off-season and next year. We’ve had everything to be successful for years except offensive coaching and execution.
How did we go from “there are names you wouldn’t believe available for this job” to “grand slam hires like that don’t happen”??? I’m confused
Both are direct quotes from this show
Right! I was waiting for the grand-slam, and nearly choked when they said Stoops. Even funnier is the rumor that Stoops wanted too much money! 😂
That's because he's being pumped information by aggy people (Looch for one) and simply passing on what he's told. Eventually Josh will learn aggy isn't the type of program he wants to tie himself to, but it may take a while.
it blows my mind how few brain cells you donuts that watch this show have
He sure said last week that it’s one of the best jobs ever and major big name coaches were just drooling to be a part of Aggie nation. SMH. We tried to tell him.
@@jbm0866yeah cus I'm sure the doesn't know anything about college football on his own yet we listen to his show crazy huh
I like Mark Stoops. I think he makes the best out of what he has at Kentucky. Even the middling teams of the SEC are consistently gonna have better players than him. IMO winning 10 games at UK is a an accomplishment.
Yeah I think they missed out
Stoops is one of the longest tenured HCs in the SEC he's done well for the school he's at, but I think its reasonable to expect that in year 11 he would have a program consistently winning 8 games especially in the SEC East where there's Georgia and maybe one other good team each year.
I think he would have been an ok hire consistently winning around 9 games but I don't he'd be making a championship.
Sentence structure please
Yeah he basically has the same record at Kentucky over his time span as ATM, with 1/10 of the resources 😂
Ok let’s be real. UK schedules absolute garbage out of conference games, then gets to the SEC play and gets wrecked year after year after year. so sick and tired of hearing how he’s a good coach. He’s a good coach at Kentucky period. You would think after 10+ years. He would’ve at least sniffed the SEC East championship but that has never been the case. And you all think him going to A&M would have been better😂 he would still get wrecked in the SEC, and he would be forced to play better competition out of conference, which means he would suck even more.
A&M is a premier college football program. Always liked them and hope for success with there new coach.
Premier?? Lol ok
What is your definition of premier? How many premier programs are there? They aren’t even the premier school in their state.
Premier is correct. If not, we would be struggling like Texas to get all the 5 stars! Elko makes our recruiter even stronger cause no one liked to listen to Jimbo Fisher talk.
He absolutely killed this segment damn💯
What happened to " I'm happy at Duke ? " Duke gets a good coach to bring them up in their conference football standings and they lose him just as fast. What these coaches don't understand is if you bring success to Duke football, and that means you aren't expected to turn them into national football champions like the basketball program, you as their football coach has it made for life probably, without all the high heat do or die pressure. Choices in life. Jump into the fire Tex A&M will light under you Coach Elko. I'm sure your contract won't have the financial oversights your predecessor had. Enjoy the heat, it's hot in Texas.
Josh, two points for the discussion. Lincoln Riley did not make the strategic error when he was hired. USC did. Lincoln Riley has never recruited for the defense. Had USC skimmed his past, they would have realized this. Second point. Ohio State made a grand slam hire with Urban Meyer. Won two titles at Florida. Yes, he was not coach at Florida when he was hired.
Way to go aggy. You always know how to keep us entertained with your incompetence. Who in their right mind pays one coach over $70MM to walk away then turns around and hires a guy that was 7-5 at Duke with a loss against what may be the worst P5 team in the country this year? Looking forward to the lulz with the upcoming AD search and the next HC search in a couple of year.
Sarkisian will be fired in 2-3 years, right after he gets an extension, count on it.
So you're saying nobody wanted the Texas A&M job?
That top tier job at the turnkey keystone program.
I would not be thrilled if I was an A&M fan.
I am. You’ll see. Elko was great when we had him before.
Here’s what I know, Pate said 3 years ago that Texas A&M was a 10 win program and I just had to deal with it lol! You’ve been wrong about A&M all along, you’re still wrong about A&M today. Yes we all dunked on you.
2:59
Gotta say, I’m of the same mindset as Josh here.
Jimbo Fisher was most definitely a flashy hire. Look how that turned out😂😂
So Josh said A&M is a keystone program and they can get whoever they want - everyone disagrees - they hire MIKE ELKO - “KEYSTONE”
Even though Elko was A&M's 3rd or maybe 4th choice, this is the best hire they could have done. Not a bad hire, but whether he can get the Aggies back to national prestige is still up in the air, even with all the good players they have. Defense is already strong enough (also Elko's strong suit), but the offense is suspect (even with Petrino around).
Elko was always a Top 3 running candidate. We LOVE the hire in Aggieland.
Kirby was very much a part of Alabama's championship teams and went on to take Georgia to a national championship game in his first 2 years on the job. Now he has that team going for their 3rd consecutive championship. Sounds like a grandslam hire to me.
I read the title and was so confused. I was like “I could’ve sworn I saw Stoops was confirmed as the coach,” and then realized I missed a big time news drop that it got overturned.
As a ND, not psyched to play aTm next 2 years
Great hire 👍
All this. All this. And yeah, you could lump Jimbo into the Grand Slam hires that didn't work out all the way.
Brian kelley...won championships at grand valley st...succesfull at central michigan...took cincinnati to a new yrs day game...took ND to a national championship game.and the playoffs...and an seccg game in yr 1 at LSU
Legendary gig'em
Jimbo. He was a grand slam hire - championship coach. They had him. And they couldn’t do it.
Jimbo was a fraud. Outside of 2 good seasons at FSU he was a mediocre coach.
Not with the way FSU was going
You missed a chance to actually highlight A&M to support your theory. The only other championship coach to be hired by a new employer that was not retired was by A&M with jimbo.
Urba Meyer: Grand Slam.
“Don’t give me Lincoln at Oklahoma, cuz he didn’t do anything there…” TRUTH!
What about Urban Meyer?
Thanks for bringing up Jim as a home run hire. He needs the good press he can get.
Kalen DeBoer turned out to be a home run hire at Washington. But I don't think anyone envisioned it at the time - certainly not nationally from a media standpoint
Pick a fit? Like Sark at Texas?
Great point on searching for “Grand-Slam” hires, they are rare and improbable. Go for hungry to win and able to build a coaching staff and program.
You give stoops that talent and money and he would rock it.
He's saying you can't name "Grand Slam Hires" and defines it as a coach who had won championships at a previous school. And the irony is A&M already HAD one in Jimbo Fisher. Which proves the point that having the championship on your resume doesn't give you a special kind of magic that an up-and-coming coach doesn't have.
Aggies now "What a great hire, I think he is a great fit"
Aggies in three to four years "He's got to go, that sorry Son of ****** can't win a game".
Typical of now days see it in business its all about instant satisfaction. 🤣😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great hire
You’re not going to convince me that Elko is sooooo much better than Stoops that the outrage shouldn’t be similar lol.
Thank you for the level headed common sense analysis
Grand slam hires. Alabama hired Saban, South Carolina hired Spurrier (maybe South Carolina hiring Holtz). Florida hiring Meyer. Perhaps UCF hiring Malzahn
However, I agree the idea of Grand slam coaches is rare. DZ
How about Brian Kelly to LSU
I don’t think it’s that the grand slam hire doesn’t exist. It’s that we never really know who it is.
Ohio State getting Urban Meyer would be one. On paper, A&M getting Fisher was thought to be one at the time.
Grand Slam Hire: Chip Kelly at UCLA when the deal was made. Didn't turn out to be grand slam results, but it was a huge signing at the time.
Okay... this is the funniest one this year. "This quarterback drop back is brought to you by..." LMAO!!!
Urban Meyer at Ohio State was a grand slam hire.
I think you're missing the point that he's making! Meyer was fully available at the time... no one snatched him from Florida or any other team. Are you suggesting A&M should have gone after Meyer? Jacksonville jaguars tried that and it didn't work out. How do you thing the fan-base would've reacted?
Dan Lanning to Oregon was a Grand Slam past the parking lot.
DId Oregon know it was a GRAND SLAM HIRE beforehand?
How come people reacted so harshly to stoops he’s done a good job at Kentucky
While as a Tennessee fan I thought it was funny, I thought the same as you. Anyone who can put down two 10 win seasons at Kentucky is most likely a good hire. Great? Probably not, but at least good. I thought he'd be better than Jimbo. Elko is a decent hire too.
Simple: Stoops was getting $9 Million/year at Kentucky. A&M just agreed to pay Fisher $76.6 Million between now and 2031 to leave.
Because he’s got too much in common with Jimbo 😴
He will be good for now
Elko was the best hire for Fisher. Since he left we tanked. Will he be the awnser year one? I don't think so. But the reason we had the defense we have was because of Elko. Elko, Robinson should be beautiful, I'm not sure petrino will stay.
If we can get our offense to be functional, then we have a shot. Defensively (minus the secondary) we have been pretty solid. But the offense has been holding us back these past 3 years.
Now they have to pay $76 million to Jimbo and you can be assured that Elko required a high buyout in case A&M decides to ditch him. Mistake to fire Jimbo.
"Grand slam" hires:
Successful:
Nick Saban at Alabama
Urban Meyer at OSU
Jim Harbaugh at Michigan (not in the playoffs tho)
Incomplete:
Brian Kelly at LSU
Mario Cristobal at Miami
Meh/bad so far:
Lincoln Riley at USC
Chip Kelly at UCLA
Fired:
Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M
Rich Rodriguez at Michigan (seriously, look it up!)
Stoops can win 7-8 at Kentucky. He could win big at a and m. Elko will flush out in 3 years.
Great comments...an a great hire hire for
A+m....welcome back to the meat grinder...the only other grand hire you were talking bout ..long ago..which of course is not now....but would have been
Lou Holtz from Norte Dame-- to-- south
Carolina..in tha day that was a big hire...
Keep up the great work Josh...your much needed an allways keeping it real man....
Don’t know why but would love if Gary Patterson were to get the call from Elko to run the defense at A&M. That would be lethal.
Elko is a huge get. This is great for Aggie football.
Grand slam hires in past.... nick saban, urban meyer, kirby smart, guess dabo too but took him a while. It doesnt happen often but it does happen. How can say kirby saban etc wasnt?
Reminds me of when FSu fans thought we where getting Bob Stoops after Willie. Norvell has seemed to work out well for us.
So much for that Athletic article from October with his wife saying, we're not going anywhere, money isn't everything, we're just getting started at Duke.
That’s crazy. Dude said he was excited about a Mike Elko press conference.
Welcome back to 8-4 A&M congrats 👍
Congrats Coach Elko. 👍
Aim high. 7-5. 8-4. Welcome to business as usual, Aggy.
So, A&M fans are happier about a guy who just finished 7-5 in the ACC and lost 23-0 to Louisville than a guy who also finished 7-5 has had two 10 win seasons at an SEC school with 0 five star recruits and beat Louisville ? 😂 Typical A&M fans
Urban Mayer to OSU, Jim Harbaugh to Michigan, Erickson to USC, some back in 90s Holtz and Spurrier but failed.
Texas A&m is the one football program in the country that looks in the mirror and sees an elaborate beauty queen.... When in reality they look like the girl next door
Lol 😂funny but so true!
How can we trust any Michigan win as clean?
"I'm hearing names out west for this job." lol
What's funny?
Bad business. We could have backed the truck up for Elko, kept him at A&M, promoted from within, and saved millions.
Great choice, better fit than Stoops
❤What a great video! Love “SEC Shorts!” ❤
Jimbo Fisher was our grand slam hire and we got burned. I like this hire much better.
It’s crazy that the expectation is for Lincoln Riley to be competing for conference championships in year 2 of a total overhaul of a program.
Riley cant rebuild a lego house....
Just a thought: Jimbo Fisher was a "grand slam" hire when he came to A&M. Had a championship and everything.
Coaching is a lot like drafting a QB for NFL teams, the slam dunks often turn out to not be slam dunks -- meanwhile Tom Brady was a sixth round pick (for years the Patriots crowed about their wisdom in selecting Tom Brady *in the sixth round*). You've got to get lucky + have the resources to be tier one (only about 12-15 of those exist to begin with, Texas AM is certainly one in terms of resources), if one or the other isn't there you are unable to fully slam dunk. Having success at Duke in Football is about as solid as having moderate success (albeit hardly tremendous success) at Michigan State (which was Saban's stop prior to high level success at LSU). In the end 99% of programs still have to hope they guess correctly ...
USC laughed at the idea of Ed Orgeron, didn't retain him..He went a won a natty and had more wins at LSU than any coach that USC has hired since.
Funny how the media gave Tennessee fans hell for the ruckus they raised during the Greg Sheono (spelling) potential hire. But I bet they won’t say anything about A&M fans
Mike Stoops, to me, would've been a great hire for Texas A&M. We'll see with this one. Texas A&M has to be patient with him for about three years to make serious noise in the SEC.
Remember when Urban Meyer was hired at OSU, he did delivered.
Big time duke fan here from 919 NC. Super bummed elko left already. No loyalty and left after only 2 seasons..
Mark stoops and Mike Elko are tier 1 coaches. There’s only a very small handful of programs that are “above” those two. I mean damn Duke has a legitimately good football team because of Elko. Thats never happened in my lifetime and I’m not sure it has ever happened.
Urban Myer was a grand slam hire for Ohio State. He brought them there first championships in over a decade
Mike Elko is a great hire. Mark Stoops is fine if he had A&M talent maybe he goes to the next level who knows. I can’t say much my fellow vols fans marched in the streets to stop Greg Schiano from coming we ended up with Pruitt so I think A&M fans got a better deal with their revolt lol.
Condolences to Mike Elko. HC at A&M is not a job I would wish on anybody. Too bad for Duke and for him.
I’m hyped to have Mike Elko. He’ll win the press conference when he wins the Natty next year.
Told ya.... thats the perfect coach for A&M
Urban to Bucks and Jimbo to aggy were also grand slam hires. One program got a natty from this, the other just fired the grand slam.
Super happy about this good ol boy hire especially for my razorbacks
