    I'm from Northern Ontario, Canada, and all tips are very familiar. And snow burn is a fun thing to explain to people who live closer to the equator. 🤣

      Oh totally 😅. Its always fun to see the face of people when you explain how sun can burn you when its -25 degrees Celsius.

      I was thinking the same thing! (Also for your winter car kit--to have clay kitty litter for traction on ice and extra hats/mitts/candles 'just in case.')

    I'm from Minnesota where, despite being at about the same latitude as Croatia, we have quite a similar climate to Finland thanks to being so far inland, so this was extremely familiar to me! I'm hopefully coming to Tampere this year for my Bachelor's studies, and this video nailed down why Finland was such an easy pick as my top destination for the next stage of my life. Here we are well prepared for the winter (plows come through regularly, homes are properly insulated, etc) but we don't have the same appreciation and respect for nature that Finland seems to have. Leaving the city here, you have to pass through hours of suburban sprawl and corn farms to truly find a natural landscape. In Finland it seems that easy access to forests, mountains and lakes is an inalienable right. I've always been indifferent towards touring historical or cultural sites, but enamored by the idea of taking trips to see the world's natural beauty, and Finland's location in the far north might be the perfect place for me to do so. The long hours of darkness and especially the blue hour that you mentioned are treasured times of reflection for me here, and I can't wait to experience them even more intensely once I get to Finland. Thank you for your amazing and helpful videos!

    We love the Finnish winter. The lights, the colors, the -30°, and the heavy ice and snow. The iced sea and people ice-fishing. People with theirs scooters and bicycles everywhere like there is no snow. Everyone enyoying the winter with heavy clothing.
    I think the most striking to me, anyway, was how bad the road condition was in Helsinki. Many people think Finland is all flat. Let me tell you Finland is NOT flat. Helsinki is NOT flat at all. And you have the tramway, lots of road lights, buses, bicycles, lots of pedestrians. Which means that you need to stop very often. And really, I was shocked to see heavy icing all over the main roads, with ice-potholes sometimes 10 cms deep. Everywhere, on all roads. A red light, and you might have big issues being stuck on the tramway way. It took us about one hour to travel through Helsinki to each the port. That was crazy. We wondered if people in Helsinki are used to having so much snow.... ?

    I think darkness and cloudness are the biggest problems during autumn and winter and spring times in Finland. There is literally lack of sun and it's depressing not only because days are short but also because sun just doesn't appear for weeks! I think it is impossible to help here, just to go to some sunny vocation to another country.. All other winterish things can be beaten but absence of sun can't be replace with anything..

    Huh, it never even occurred to me that snow on top of a car could become problematic for others, but that does make sense.
    On that note, l have 2 questions: do winter tires not work in hot climates the same way summer tires don't work in cold ones, or is there something else as to why winter tires aren't used outside of winter? And about moisturizers, can you go into detail on why you'd need one in Finland even if your skin isn't dry?
    Thanks in advance, Oliver.

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some of these things (like brushing the snow of the roof of your car) are things that many Finns dont even think about so i thought that these would be the last things that many internationals would think of without a reminder 😅.
      To your questions:
      1. Winter tires do work during the summer as well. In fact, they work too well. The whole idea of having studded or friction tires is to create that extra friction. However, the problem with this during the summer is that this extra friction has a really negative impact on the roads as the studs (which are basically sharp steel bits) grind the asphalt faster than normal tires. You would not necessarily see a difference if just one person used winter tires during the summer but when you have hundreds of thousands of cars doing this - you are going to ruin the roads. Also, studded tires are much louder on bare asphalt so having everyone use them during the summers would also make a lot more unnecessary noise. For these reasons, you have to change back to summer tires (by law) by a certain date (which i dont remember right now).
      2. Simply put, during winter the air is dryer than during the summer. This is especially true inside because heating our houses dries the air as a bi-product. Some people have more delicate skin and require moisturisers. However, this is often recommended for everyone just because of the fact that the air is dryer - its just generally better for your skin.
