Its a fact that we Indians are deprived of some of the luxury cars in world due to the tough and costly taxation system. I drove Camry ( it costed equivalent to around Rs 19 lakhs only ) for 3 years in Gulf and it was so good that after 3 years too the performance and stability was the same.

The idea is if they build it in India it will be cheaper, if they import it it would cost double, if they produce here in knocked down kits and assemble in India the prices are better.
The companies doesnt find the market rewarding enough to shift a production line here

Ford, another Diesel engine giant, is suffering. Honda, one of my favorites, is also suffering. Skoda-VW are making vigorous efforts to find their feet here. Basically, not only Govt. or these Companies, the tendency of people is to be blamed too. People are so much into safe playing that they get chills in their spine when you ask them to experiment or try to be innovative. If one goes to any society in Delhi, parking lots are flooded with Maruti Suzuki only. In between one will find a Hyundai. Rarely a Honda. And very rarely other brands including Tata. Toyota didn't invest in compact sedan segment in the early 2010s. Honda tried it with the amaze and is seeing the success there. The pricing of Toyota was much higher than the competition, and although we may criticize Maruti for 'Tin can' build quality, we Indians are obsessed with mileage in first place. Also, Toyota didn't and doesn't have cars for first time buyers yet.
