    This video shows for the first time 4 generations of VoicePlay baritones on screen. Layne was their first baritone. Tony Wakim (the guard in this video) was baritone a bit later. J. None followed after Tony left to work behind the cameras instead, and after J joined the Navy Cesar became their current baritone, though he also functions as tenor in a lot of songs.

    Layne crushed this arrangement and these guys just elevated this whole thing. Man, if you can take a song done by someone like Alan Menken or Lin Manuel Miranda (We Don't Talk About Bruno) and make it even better... You've really done something! Eli belting an F5, Cesar being a guitar, those harmonies and rhythms... They're just on another level!

    This one just never fails to be as enthralling as when they dropped this video. All of it is incredible. Cesar's air guitar with those high vocals is a step further than the previous instrumental sounds. Eli has just really come into his own - what a powerhouse. Usually I think of Layne and Geoff as a pair but in this video they both had more distinctive parts than the amazing vocal percussion and bass guitar. I love it, as dark as it is. Loved the Kyrie Eleison (God have mercy litany) against the English translation with Geoff's God have mercy on her, God have mercy on me. J None is at home here with VP. Geoff's arpeggios are just a demonstration of what he is capable of. WOW!

    Geoff and Eli are reciprocals. The higher one goes, the lower the other goes...and then they switch. Not to mention the screaming rock tenor creds they both have. Then you add the alien/synthesizer/bastard child of Phil Collin' s drum set (Layne), and Cesar's emoting with HIS incredible voice...
    Well, damn.
    🤷‍♀

    Revelatory for me was Eli's "Destroy Esmeralda". It was such a clean and pure sound. Usually he adds grit to those high notes, but here it is just a gorgeous tone and such a contrast to the actual words. Geoff's tone (especially at the beginning) was so rich and round before "Burn It' and hell comes in with his darkened tones. And while Cesar is a baritone, we usually don't hear him singing in his lower register that often, but the tone when he sings about the devil is striking. While I can agree that often it is Eli & Geoff that hit the 'star' notes, Cesar's strong point is the emotions - especially as we have seen in "Creep" and "I Can't Make You Love Me". And while we do occasionally hear Layne sing, it is usually 'sweeter' than what he did here. This fit the song better than I would have expected from him. All round, a gorgeous rendition which really hits my brain. How can they sound so 'glorious' singing about something so vile. But, I find that fits Frollo's frame of mind quite well. I bet he convinced himself that he was doing the right thing. And isn't that a good reminder these days?

    Beatboxer left, should we look for another one?
    Geoff: Let's see what Layne can do.
    Geoff wants some high parts? Don't worry Eli has this. (Yes THAT Eli)
    J None - Tenor in VP joins the military singing group as a BASS
    And Caesar can break your heart with his emotions and mind with his runs...

    It's always a treat when Layne sings. Hmmmm, have you watched "Warriors" or "Nothing Else Matters," where Layne displays ANOTHER talent of his? J. None shares in it in "Warriors," though to a lesser degree (in the length of time he does it, it sounds awesome).

    In Jack's Lament, the eye effect is pumpkins, and here it is flames. Layne is a baritone, but they ALL have insane ranges. There are no weak links in Voiceplay! I do hope that after his Navy service is over, J None comes back as an official member again--this particular lineup seems to really suit them in what they are doing these days (not to take anything away from their former members, who were also great).

  • @janetdw
    @janetdw 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

    Great reaction as usual. I’m glad I woke up a little earlier than I had planned. They did such an exceptional job on this.
    That choral portion when it segues into something suggesting church bells ringing emphasizes to me the fact that he was a high ranking member of the church.
    I see this as a man going from torment (the crackle in his voice) into madness. There is a point just after “burn it” where he looks at his hands as he’s singing “this fire in my skin” as if he is confused by his mania.
    Then he exposed all the twisted evil of the character. He blames Esmeralda , he blames the devil, and he even blames God. And then that switch gets flipped.🔥🔥🔥
    Layne was the baritone. Except for the departure of Earl who was their super high tenor, all of the changes have been in the baritone slot.
    If you get a chance to watch Death of a Bachelor, they covered all five parts of the song but only Geoff and Earl were in the video. You can get a chance to see Geoff beatboxing. There’s footage of live performances from back when he was a performer at Disney and he is beatboxing. It’s a little disorienting because we tend to think of him as the bass.

      @hweber4229 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Very good analysis! In the book and the musical, he is a member of the church, which makes this song make much more sense, but in the movie, he is a judge.

    If you want to hear how just 2 VoicePlay singers sound,check out some of their older Partwork covers.
    For instance Death of A Bachelor with only Geoff and Earl, their previous high tenor. Geoff doing the beat boxing.
    Here you saw all of VoicePlay baritones in the same scene, though not all singing. Tony, who was baritone before JNone came in as his replacement, did the cameo ad the guard, but the voice was Eli voice acting.
    Go to the very bottom.of the VoicePlay videolist and you'll find a recording, made after a group performance in a NY club 'Eli killing Superstition' with a solo performance of Eli alone singing. A little backup by Earl in it.

The visual of the fire in Geoff’s was a nice touch. To me it represented him being overcome and possessed by evil. He had an answer to his prayer when the guard came in saying the gypsy escaped. This was just mesmerizing I couldn't tell you how many times I've watched it. You didn't comment on what Geoff was doing during J's solo. He was doing a vocal arpeggio that was brilliant. I've heard him do it before in The Dragonborn Comes, but this one was even faster. And Cesar's instrumental sounds in the air guitar moment - amazing. He's done instrumental sounds before, specifically in In the Air Tonight, but the vocal flexibility in this, WOW. And there was a bass line during Geoff's baritone solo, There is some debate whether that was Layne, Eli, J, or a second line from Geoff. I don't think they have answered that question.
    The whole piece was brilliant, thank you, thank you for reacting to it.

    They are that good all the time. Watch some of the BTS, they often sing in them. Eli in In The Air Tonight hitting those high notes full strength once he got warmed up and it just made J laugh. They were outside of Pattycake Productions, in a loading dock and they had a few people that had saw the lights and wanted to see what they were doing. They had offers to be extras. J and Cesar dueting in the same BTS, In My Room they pause for 'bass and tenor lessons' as Geoff saw how low Eli could reach and then they had Geoff hitting the high notes. You can hear Cesar signing in almost every BTW and chat. Layne signing Geoff's part in the BTS for a mini as he was showing the guys how he wanted a particular part to be acted out. BTS for 7 Nation Army and Geoff starts signing in overtones (I think) while they work out an electrical issue. I love all those little extras we get on Patreon. 🥰 Thanks for the reaction, enjoyed it!!

    You guys are awesome! Loving your Geoff and VoicePlay reactions.
    Geoff mentioned he had a vocal coach have him sing his range and sing it also with vocal fry up and down his range. He said it smoothed out the vocal breaks between his passages, giving him a smooth transition from his top range to his low range.
    If you want to compare Geoff solo vs. with VP on the same song, look for "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold". Geoff did it a while ago solo, then they recently did it as a short (I think) a cappella. It gives a pretty good side by side, auditorially speaking. VP also did "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" years ago when Tony Wakim was still the baritone and Earl Elkins, Jr. was the tenor 1(the position has yet to be filled), and Geoff redid it last December for his solo channel, they're quite different.
    With the Holiday season on its way, may I humbly suggest Geoff's rendition of "God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen". You will not regret it, it is beautiful. He kept the classic origin of the song, while also bringing it up to date with the arrangement. Personally, I keep it on my regular playlist, it's just too good to confine it to one season.
    Anyway, before I start to ramble...😅
    You can't go wrong with any of their offerings, and I'm loving your reactions and interactions with each other so much. ❤
