I understand what you mean but what I wanted to point out is: There were a lot regular season games with some kind of 'tension' back in the days - so you did not really have to wait that it might possibly change in the finals... But the game has changed (perimeter play, zone defense and so on eliminate almost all one on one matchups) and the players mind set has too (almost all of them prefer to 'keep calm' like Tim Duncan)... I still do not claim, that this is not 'smart' but it was priceless to see how Jordan made his opponents doubt their own capabilities or how Barkley or Payton got more and more heated every minute.
Well it might have to do with the league being softer these days, back then the NBA wasn't that much popular, it was kinda rough. Today we have facebook and every kid can follow the NBA so the NBA can't afford a rough product. I don't want to disrespect LeBron or Kawhi - they are obviously great players.
But somehow their 'battle' seems so bloodless and unemotional...
I know it's professional to play like that - but it was so much more entertaining back in the heydays of Jordan, Barkley, Payton & Miller.
You could still see how much they wanted to win every single matchup against their toughest opponents.
Kawhi and LeBron might play even 'better' than some of these 'old guys' did, but man it was so exciting to watch when Jordan made his defenders despair or when any of the other guys I named had a matchup against their biggest 'on court enemies'...
Seems to me that the only allstar-caliber player who still plays with the same emotional intensity in todays game is Russell Westbrook...
IronWhy It's not unemotional. It's an attitude they both go with. Kawhi is very unique he is just ballin' and that's it. But I saw him laugh sarcastically after some whistle at some point which had never happened. In a possible finals match-up things could change.
I understand what you mean but what I wanted to point out is:
There were a lot regular season games with some kind of 'tension' back in the days - so you did not really have to wait that it might possibly change in the finals...
But the game has changed (perimeter play, zone defense and so on eliminate almost all one on one matchups) and the players mind set has too (almost all of them prefer to 'keep calm' like Tim Duncan)...
I still do not claim, that this is not 'smart' but it was priceless to see how Jordan made his opponents doubt their own capabilities or how Barkley or Payton got more and more heated every minute.
Well it might have to do with the league being softer these days, back then the NBA wasn't that much popular, it was kinda rough. Today we have facebook and every kid can follow the NBA so the NBA can't afford a rough product. Im sure LeBron and Kawhi could have played in that era though, LeBron might have been average but Kawhi would have been sensational like he is today, he is ridiculous.
