  • Join Sally and I, as we visit Barrowford Locks on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal where the adjacent Canal and River Trust reservoir is undergoing extensive repair works and then move on to Foulridge for refreshments and a look at the tunnel. Includes stunning aerial views.

      Hi Ed, thanks for commenting, that is a long while back. We had a lovely day and the video will be a nice memento for us. Different canals or lengths of canals used different types of paddle. Best wishes to you from Sally and myself, take care whatever you’re doing.

    A lovely and informative vlog with some interesting drone footage of the reservoir.
    I know this stretch quite well, having been through both sets of locks and the tunnel.
    There are interesting facts about a cow falling into the canal and swimming the whole length, coming out the other end and being revived with a stiff drink from the nearby pub.
    Also, the tunnel wasn't built as a conventional tunnel. The hill was excavated into a valley shape. The canal was laid, then built over and then the hill replaced over the top.😮
    The coffee and bacon sandwiches in the cafe are the best.
    They look as if the top locks have been spruced up since I was there last and I remember the bottom locks being really heavy.
    I remember Paul from Morning Star (Narrowboat Life Unlocked) jumping off the boat near the tunnel entrance and slipping on the wet stones and falling into the canal. Fortunately he was unhurt.
    The Old rail line was interesting. There is talk of opening an old rail line from Skipton to Colne. That makes a change.
    Anyway Alan, now you have recce'd the place, are you planning to come up this way next year? You will love it.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the information Harry, I had heard about the cow but didn’t realise it was here but I wasn’t aware of the ‘cut and cover’ approach to building the tunnel. Any railway reconstruction has to be good. I can’t see me visiting the L&L by boat but I will continue to do so by camper van. Thanks for your comprehensive comment, all the best, take care.

    Can't be too much wrong with a man who likes a drop of Peroni !! Interesting that after travelling this stretch of the L & L on my first canal trip in 1977 I passed this way a few weeks ago when travelling to Padiham whilst on a short break in Lancs (from Cornwall!)

    Hi Both and "One eyed Pirate dog". Hope you are both well. When we walked with our son along the cut, we saw the widebeam "hotel boat" and I was rendered speechless by "Skipton" as it went past. My son reckoned I had become a real cannaller as I had never seen a widebeam workboat before either. Have had a fair bit of sadness lately with bereavements, especially the loss of our senior cat Rory. but this vlog cheered us up.Really enjoyed this . Keep Well both. Bob and Helen.

    We once stayed in Foulridge in an amazing cottage. When we walked the canal we were amazed to find it completely empty of water. A few yards of orange para-webbing and chained up lock gates. No sign of any work being done at the time, mind you, this was about 16 years ago. Metres? Sorry mate i am an imperial bloke.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Frank, there must have been some substantial repairs going on somewhere at the time. The tunnel sign is quoted in metres but I did put yards/feet equivalents. We have a confused measurement system don't we. We went metric in 1965 but it's not fully caught on .... Have you ever heard anyone say how many miles they get to the litre!! Cheers

    Hi Alan, lovely scenery. And they had cyclepaths, brilliant. I would love to have cycled along there. It was nice to see Reggie again. It was strange that those locks were left open. I know they do that on rivers, but not usually canals. xx

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Jenny, sometimes lock gates will swing open of their own accord. When you try and close a pair of gates in a double width lock, the wash of closing the second gate, can make the first closed gate open. It can be very frustrating. Certainly good cycling along there xx

    Lovely to see you visiting my part of the world and great to see that you both enjoyed the visit. Walking this section of canal has always been a favourite with several generations of my family. No criticism but it did grate a little with your pronunciation of the two places though - locals would say Barrow Ford and not Barrow Fud, and its more like (but not quite) Foal Ridge and not Foul Ridge. Also, despite the information board shown in your video about the railway closure, it was not a direct victim of the 1963 Beeching report. It's death warrant was signed by the Labour Transport Minister, MP for Blackburn, Barbara Castle in 1970. What a useful piece of track that would have been today if it had remained open. So sad.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Different dialects do cause issues with pronunciation. Barrowford is one word and not two, so it should sound differently than when spoken as a two word variant. This sort of debate is quite common. Locally, is the River Nene, depending on where you live, it is either pronounced as Nen or Neen, either seem to be accepted. The problem with the Beeching Report is that it had no regard to alternatives, it was purely looked at as a cost exercise, today would be very different the social and wider economic interests would be considered. Trackbeds should have been preserved for the future.

    • @peterrushton798
      @peterrushton798 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Indeed, local pronunciation can follow little rhyme nor reason. I was recently in Teignmouth, Deven where the river is pronounced Teign, but the town it flows through seemed to be pronounced Tinmuth. 😂. So many variations in a common language.

    • @peterrushton798
