Just to clarify, the reason we don't use straw is because it causes us humans to get itchy and gives me an asthma flareup. I notice the goats cough more with straw as well, and on top of that, it's just not very absorbent, so all the birthing slime slides right off and makes puddles on the floor. Hay isn't a good option because 1) it's expensive and 2) the goats will eat it, which means they are eating hay that has been stepped on/birthed on which means they are exposed to more parasites. Since a doe's immunity is challenged during kidding and parasite loads can easily increase during this time, we don't want to introduce more to her body. Last year we had used pelleted bedding in an effort to find something more absorbent than pine shavings, but when the pellets get wet, it turns to sawdust. It ended up being way more absorbent than we thought and so dusty, getting in the goats eyes and causing more coughing. Looks like pine shavings is the best in the end! Thanks for all your tips over the years -- we really do appreciate it!
Compressed straw is sooooo much better! Have you tried it? We don’t use anything other than that kind because of my asthma. Here in Oregon is great, idk everywhere else.
That makes since especially if your allergic to it. The dusty straw is like the hay good straw won't be dusty. As always find what works best for you and stick to it. Straw works best for us but we have dirt floors and do deep bedding method
You can try recycled news paper shavings to limit the dust and keep the absorption quality of wood pellets. For extra comfort you can top dress with some shavings. Then to limit dust on cleanup you can also use a watering can to sprinkle water on the top layer. It’s not perfect but helps with the dust for both you and animals (I’m a horse person so have a lot of experience with dust and shavings in stalls lol)
@@TheHeavenlyHomestead That's a good point maybe ours is different here in AZ, it comes only in bales here or there are bags of it that is shredded down for things like guinea pigs. Either way it's just allergy-triggering tho, so probably not a good idea to try again.
I have allergies and straw, hay etc causes red eyes, sneezing. So now I use compacted hemp in my chicken coop. If I can’t find it, I will get compacted pine shavings.
It's adorable that Honey will be delivering in the stall she was born in! If Honey has a doeling, you could name her Junebug, and if she has a buckling, you could name him Beans.
@@iloveowls90 We already saw in the video all the names. We chose two names from the list that we thought Honey's kid should be named. It was just a suggestion.
Please please please use Rufio for your best looking buckling! I had a bearded dragon named Rufio who passed away on my birthday last year. He was the best boy ever. Would love to see a spunky little guy with the same name.
When horses foal, we don’t use the sawdust either, usually not even the shavings. We typically use straw so we don’t have the same issue, with the chips/dust sticking to babies face a nostrils :)
Keep forgetting to comment, been around about 6 years...about the time of the kitchen remodel. So thrilled to see your subscriber count where it is...1 million here we come!! 😁😁
Yay! Weed 'em & Reap goat kid babies are almost here. Every year I look forward to your goat kids arriving all the way from Australia. My Mum makes a yummy orange cake with a whole orange in it, skin & all.
It feels like yesterday that honey was a little doeling! We all saw her potential from day one! So happy Junebug made it into the list! Was definitely a favourite of mine, I know I got a bit carried away with cute/funny names 😂
My first cat was called Patricia! I didn't name her, she was a rescue. Funny thing is my next-door neighbour at the time was also called Patricia. There was a lot of comedy when I'd call my cat and 'human Patricia' would answer 😂
Hello De Nelle I'm glad to see you feeling good and back in duty. That's great to see Lydia and Ethan choosing the baby goats names, they always have such a good bond. The orange cake really looks yummy. I can't wait for baby goats, I hope Honey have the baby this weekend. Wishing a safe and fast delivery. ❤
Hi Danielle and family❣️ The waiting is sooo hard‼️ I am eager to see lots of kiddos on the ground.❣️❣️ For the glaze, you can make it with the juice of another orange or juice from the store. My mom used to make a frosting mixture & made graham cracker squares for school lunches. 😋
I just made the orange cake, and it’s delicious!!! I added a splash of milk as gf tends to be dry. A powdered sugar icing with orange juice topped it beautifully!
My young saanen wether was part of a themed kid group, it was bird themed so his name is goose, but we nicknamed him beans because of the Canadian bean goose. We’ve since been calling him beanie. so it’s quite nice to see both beans and goose on the lists!
What I have found so great is just getting the harbor freight moving blankets for 5$. Then we deliver on that. Fold it up with all the splat and goo inside and out the mess goes. Worth every penny.
How exciting!! Can't wait for another year of kidding! I think this is my 5th year?? Also never been THIS early! I refreshed my youtube and it said 42 second ago~ Just watched the whole video, amazing as always
My autism daughter absolutely loves you and wants to raise goats and works with animals when she grows up. She’s currently 8. She picks says first girl/the diva should be Raisin and the golden girl should Flower or Baby and the boy is Chucks lol
I'm sure at least a few other followers suggested 'Baby' for doeling tag too, but still, y'all chose one of my name suggestions - YAY! Now you're truly ready for the 2024 kidding/kid naming season to begin! May this kidding season be one of your most successful, and a year marked for having only healthy births and all doelings too! 😊 Out of the 19 name I suggested, I was rooting the most for 'Crop Circles' (nickname CC). I think Crop Circles would be a cute name for a kid/goat with lots moon spots, but this is coming from someone who doesn't have any goats at all! 😅
