This album came out when I was headed right into the worst depression I've ever faced. A year later, I can say I've made a ton of progress, and I still love this album; but I did put it on the other day and it does bring me back to that strange, dark period. If nothing else, Brighten is already a part of my personal story in that sense.. Which is nothing new for me, considering how much AiC has played a role in my life already. It's just crazy how this kind of music can have such a huge effect! Hope he keeps makin em.
As someone who dabbles in darkness, the best advice is, get outside and throw yourself into social situations . Even if it's just going to a bar/ library/gym/ cooking class. Inside leads to too much inside.
I felt that with Degradation Trip...I managed to get Volume 1 & 2 (thank you dad's credit card) and found my discman. This album is like a light...well, the title says it all. It's amazing Elton John, was the inspiration for so many grunge/metal artists...Madman Across the Water is amazing. I loved it when I heard Jerry doing backup with Gov't Mule doing a cover of Effergy from Creedence...
I love you Jerry Cantrell. You have helped me through some very low tragic times, and been there through some super happy fun times as well and everywhere in between. I graduated in 1991 and man in the box of course was my first favorite AIC song but I've kinda followed Jerry specifically. I wish I could thank him for his art and tell him how his writing saved my life many times over. Literally physically and mentally . Thank you a million times over.

Of course I immediately dug Atone, but I was particularly struck by Goodbye. I stopped dead in my tracks and was completely floored by the amount of emotion I felt listening to it. The brevity of it too I think enhances the power of it, and I was completely stunned by the end. At the time I didn't know this was an Elton John cover, and I worried for a minute that something more serious was happening with Jerry. I absolutely love the album and I've had a great experience with it. From the release of Atone, through listening to the album front to back multiple times and then culminating in San Antonio I felt very connected. The western feel that's mentioned in the documentary is something I connect with too especially after walking through downtown San Antonio eating the local food and exploring museums. Thanks so much Jerry.
Goodbye slayed me. I was born in 67 and Elton John was my most profound early influence, along with some Beatles, and Paul McCartney/ Wings "Uncle Albert" which was popular when I was about 4. I heard the San Antonio show was amazing . . . was trying to coordinate with my friend there to go, but she wasn't available that weekend (she is an on call doctor who loves music). Missing the Brighten tour is on my list of regrets in this life, lol. I'm grateful for this documentary. It's a very special album . . . alongside all of AIC, and all of Jerry's solo work.
Yeah...that one hit me hard. I lost my son three years ago to an overdose. Jerry has carried the loss of Layne for all of these years, and I feel that sorrow in my heart as well.
Loved this album from the first time I heard it! They don’t call him #RiffLord for nothing! Saw him in concert in April, we were 10 feet from the stage, was completely mesmerized by his awesomeness! A true rock legend! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Jerry’s music is LIFE, I don’t want to live in a world without his music, keep it going Jerry many of us depend on you, we lost Layne and still missed , by you carrying on its softened the blow, im in my 50s and been metal since early 80s not a big fan of newer music but your music is an exception, just masterfully done unique genuine the best, hands down thanks for the tunes
I feel an actual sense of pride having gone through my adult life with both AIC & Jerry Cantrell by my side, musically speaking. "Dirt"was released when I waa age 21 & was the only album, besides my discovery of the first three Led Zeppelin albums the summer I waa age 12, that literally drove me to my living room floor, where I lais in front of my stereo system & plugged in the headphones to spend the entire weekend listening over & over & over to something that in 1992, a girl living in her hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida, a resort town on the Gulf of Mexico, completely captivated by the seductively dark sounds from a far-off land called Seattle. My musical love affair began with love at first listen & I've been slayed by Layne & Jerry, then Jerry, ever since. I believe the harmonization is better than my parents' generation with Crosby, Stills & Nash (I can take or leave Young), & Simon and Garfunkle, both groups I love & reapect, I was raised listening to both, but Layne & Jerry belong to Gen X. Every offering JC has put out has been wonderful to liaten to.
Love Jerry's music. Enjoy always listening to his story telling. He deserves more respect than we can give him. He had nothing and came from nothing and is a master at his craft. Thank you Jerry!

Never knew how much of an influence Jerry was until I started writing my own songs after quitting guitar for over 20yrs. Lost my dad and stepdad in the same year and started playing again which turned into creating my own songs with a buddy. Our song Falling is in itself I believe is directly influenced by Jerry.
