That's the only time he would cry you know? Frying up those onions. I couldn't find salad, but I picked up kale instead which is the closest thing. So yeah, this kale is for you, mom. Didn’t get me wrong Layne is probably one of my favorite singers ever .. easily in my top 5 ... or even top 3 ...but everyone always praises him for his work and they never say too much about Jerry ... he’s so underrated...I’m sure Jerry Cantrell put so much of himself in every AIC song maybe more anyone else in the band and he’s tho reason they were truly an amazing band ... he pushed the art ... it’s funny that he said that about a lot of the picks he had ... he spoke about the Feel of the songs and the Feel that those bands created ... I think that’s the main reason I love AIC ... the feelings of sorrow ... loneliness.... pain ... Jerry is such a great musician 🙌🏻

      Not to say he wasn't an extremely talented songwriter himself, both from what Jerry has said in the past about how he would compose and write his own personal stuff and how he contributed I think most lyrics to songs on the tripod album, it's obvious that Layne was pretty talented aswell!

    I knew the hipsters would be coming out of the woodwork trashing Jerry's mainstream picks on this. The reality is I think he was being honest and basically showing everyone the groundwork for what truly influenced him to be one of the greatest tone masters in the world of guitar.
    The funny thing is, most people don't realize how influential these albums were, nor do they realize how many albums were created with a goal to achieve the feel of these pieces of classic rock. Whether people want to recognize it or not, just Back in Black alone is the impetus for so many really great albums that came after it. Everyone of those albums are a blueprint for making something really magical- because that's what they were. Anyone that makes music for pure enjoyment and pushes to reach a level of very high craftsmanship can understand these picks, especially from somebody as successful and creative in his own rite.

    • @LFRALPHNSTUFF
      @LFRALPHNSTUFF 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    • @grajmahal
      @grajmahal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, I know- people realize these albums were influential. But I was trying (unsuccessfully) to say that there were and are a lot of producers that really used specific aspects of what was a achieved on these albums as a benchmark for much of the work they created. A lot of the nuances, from the sounds of particular instruments, to the reverb effects used, to how it was mixed- was a blueprint for so much music. Beyond what most realize.

Like one ones going around saying that jerry isn’t a great guitarist, that would be under rating him, he might not be talked about as much as some other guitarist that came before him but that doesn’t make someone under rated, underrating someone makes them underrated. This ad nauseam has been said throughout all of human history, but of course the older generation these days are obsessed with disparaging millennials like no generation that came before (millennials are actually getting up there though - no teenager/under 21 in the world counts as a millennial, so 10 years from now when you’re musing about the “real” and good ol’ days, make sure youse older know-it-alls start referring to the youngest and seemingly clueless and devoid of good taste generation as Generation Z... nah, that’s asking too much from y’all). Btw.. what's wrong with loving your roots? This is about finding what's important to him and of course he's gonna dig up some Beatles or Sabbath for it.

    I saw Alice in Chains open up for Soundgarden a week before Facelift was released. I was in Portland for my brother's wedding, my mom dropped me off to the show at Crystal Ballroom, she was totally convinced I was going to get stabbed for some reason lol. The ballroom had wrestling mats in the pit so the hardwood floors wouldn't get scuffed up but I thought it was was posh to mosh an fall on a mat. AIC blew my mind, how could a local band be so friggin great. Their set is over, I walked to the back of the hall, admiring this amazing venue and was stunned by the beer selection on tap. I am in heaven. I traveled from South Carolina for the wedding and when I ordered my hammered ale, dude beside me ask where I am from, turns out he was stationed at an air force base in South Carolina, small world. I asked him if he saw the opening band, tell him how friggin great they were...and the story begins. Guy behind says thanks dude, glad you liked the show. I turn around and it is a 20 something year old JERRY CANTREL!! I bullshit for a moment and Jerry picks up on my southern accent, I introduced him to my new air force buddy and tell Jerry we are both from S.C. Turns out Jerry was a big history buff and was interested in the civil war. Of course the civil war began in Charleston,SC so Jerry kept picking my brain about the south. All of a sudden he seems more interested in me than I could imagine. Have some laughs, completely in tune with my new friends but can't get over how cool this guitarist is and he was kinda feeling the same vibe when the singer in his band walks up. That's right, Layne strolls over with sun glasses like he Corey Heart with his sun glasses at night. Jerry tells Layne they made 2 big fans tonight but dig it, they are all the way from South Carolina! Layne Staley turns to me, pulls his glasses down on his nose so he can look me in the eye, makes a hissing sound, shakes his head and says...COUNTRY COMES TO TOWN!! Pulls his shades up and walks away LMFAO.. I tell Jerry your singer is awesome but where does he get off acting like a friggin rock star before his first album was even out..Jerry says Dave he's gonna be a rockstar next week, trust me buy the album. Jerry shook my hand, told me to have a great night and he was glad we met. Jerry was just an average Joe acting dude and could not have been more down to earth and cool. I love that Layne insulted me for no reason, just proved he was always in his own lane. Oh yeah Soundgarden played almost the entire Loud Love album that night and were phenomenal. I left the Crystal Ballroom levitating and didn't get stabbed.

    I LOVE this picks. Rather than do what most people on this show do which is to list down a litany of obscure artists that they might not even listen to as much, Jerry decided to pick music that speaks to him, that continues to influence and inspire his own music. Straight to the classics and there's nothing wrong with that. Nothing pretentious too.

      I disagree. He already has this stuff in his collection and grew up with it. I doubt he would really get that stuff if it wasn't filmed. I mean maybe I have not seen enough of these I know some people want to be "different" but a lot of it I can picture the artist listening to.

    I love how he picks the music that everyone doesn’t want to see ... all these Music geeks expect for all these no name bands wit no fame but Jerry tells you .. “ Hey .. The Beatles are great , AC/DC rocks , Elton John is such a great musician..I love country music and Willie and Cash are amazing .. ZZ Top is the shit... Judas Priest is great metal ... I love Fleetwood Mac ... “ those are the artists that might have a lot of success because they innovate and influence so many... they may get hate from these idiots who think they know better music ... but Jerry is true to himself and doesn’t care what negativity might come his way ... 🤷🏻‍♂️ maybe that’s why his music is so great ... I’m just really surprised that he didn’t add any Metallica to his bag 😂

    Whenever I talk about Alice In Chains to people that have never really listened to them, I describe them as a heavy band that truly shows their influences on their sleeve. Literally everything that Jerry picked up backs that up. Holy shit... I loved the ACDC recognition especially. All of these influences, and more, paved the ground work for one of the most under-rated metal bands to have ever existed in my own opinion. This band changed so many things for me as a musician, growing up.

    Aside from a very nice interview and look at what inspired Jerry. I have to say, I think is so underrated as a guitar player. He really plays to what the song is asking for, and when you gives you taste of what he's capable of doing (technically) it's about as good as you're going to get. He really has a nice flavor for phrasing, dynamics, feel, and groove. Thanks for the cool interview Jerry!

I bought bought Kill 'Em All, Screaming for Vengeance, and Defenders of the Faith when I got the walkman, but I adopted her cassettes after raiding the wood paneled drawer things everybody had in the '90's. Among the adopted tapes were Highway to Hell, Facelift, Ten, Core, Purple, an old Alice Cooper best of from the 70's, and a couple others I can't think of. Oh! All the Lynyrd Skynyrd stuff and a CCR best of. Ah man, the good old days. It's wild to think back and realize 1990 is almost 30 years ago. Time flies.

    Didn’t get me wrong Layne is probably one of my favorite singers ever .. easily in my top 5 ... or even top 3 ...but everyone always praises him for his work and they never say too much about Jerry ... he’s so underrated...I’m sure Jerry Cantrell put so much of himself in every AIC song maybe more than anyone else in the band and he’s the reason they were truly an amazing band ... he pushed the art ... it’s funny that he mentioned that about a lot of the picks he had ... he spoke about the Feel of the songs and the Feel that those bands created ... I think that’s the main reason I love AIC ... the feelings of sorrow ... loneliness.... pain ... Jerry is such a great musician 🙌🏻 thank you for your amazing legacy Jerry ❤️
