Animated and wide-ranging sitdown w/STRAIGHT EDGE author Tony Rettman and Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Government Issue, Dag Nasty, the Meatmen, Doggy Style, Junkyard, Bad Religion) at Holdfast Records in Asbury, Park, NJ, on November 18, 2017.
This is the full nearly-an-hour talk session, post your highlights and we'll add them here:
    0:00:05 Introduction
0:15:50 the formation of Samhain w/ Glenn Danzig & Chuck Biscuits
Thanks to Holdfast Records, and all involved!
Read STRAIGHT EDGE: A Clear-Headed Hardcore Punk History, by Tony Rettman (Bazillion Points, 2017), and see if you agree with these guys:
"Tony Rettman's book is the choice for a firsthand account of the history, inner workings, and real truth of straight edge, one of the most important cultural influences of the last century. Straight edge kicked down the walls, and opened the doors to music and choices that formed a new core of cool. This book ensures that legacy continues."-Al Barile, S.S. Decontrol
“Fxcking loved it!!! A great book. Tony Rettman did it once again.”-Mike Ferraro, Judge
“This book accurately recalls a counterculture within a counterculture, a movement that changed the course of so many people’s lives, including my own. A crucial and authoritative glance into that world, shining light for fans around the globe on a time that we will never forget.”-Ray Cappo, Youth of Today
“What separates hardcore from punk is that punk was just saying, ‘fuck this place.’ Hardcore was saying, ‘let’s make a difference. Let’s make our minds stronger and focus.’”-Toby Morse, H2O
“We were out to create a revolution. We loved the power and energy of hardcore, but not the whole self-destructive punk ethos. We were into being healthy and living clean, mean, and smart.”-John Porcelly, Youth of Today

Interesting to hear Brian speak so candidly and with such humility. Seems like a great guy not to mention amazing musician. Also notable that he was so tolerant of the many inane sxe questions and the fucking beeping. I checked my fire alarms in three different rooms while watching this.

I can't think about Minor Threat without hearing NOFX's cover of "Straight Edge." 🤭

This is cool. Hopefully a good book, since there's been so many on not just hardcore but straightedge as well.

I think people that make the choice to be straightedge and keep true to it have made a good choice, I think the dedication to being sober could maybe be the same to not being sober.

One thing I'm noticing through all the interviews I've seen with Brian through the years, the man is absolutely not a fan of the Fender Stratocaster.

How does Brian Baker have time to be a hand model?

The call in people were vapid, “does being straight edge make you want you to make your records sound better?” Lame.

It's nice to see Brian finally admit that he was just an @$$hole who wanted to be a famous musician. And Junkyark was terrible!

The alt right is just surface level shit. I'm ex-straight edge and got into punk/HC in highschool and now I'm 36 and a Nazbol. My old drummer and I are making a new band. First Nazbol punk band in the west. Not about hairstyles, not about image. Just music. And the message.
