    My dad raised ostriches when I was growing up, and when our breeding male did that we always thought it was his way of trying to look big and tough to scare us away. I never knew it was mating behavior. Also, if you've never seen a flock of ostriches spinning in circles, it's pretty great.

    There is no such thing as a female peacock. The females are called Peahens. The gender neutral term is Peafowl.

      Fair point! The closest I get to bird knowledge is dinosaur knowledge, and that can hardly get me as far as peacock/hen/fowl :)

      Also, a pee foul is when you pee outside the foul line...
      I'm so sorry. I couldn't resist making a pun joke in English. It was too easy. I couldn't resist.

      Following that logic the gender neutral term should be peachicken

    I have a small flock of hens (of the chicken variety). I am also a mother and single parent, and thus kinda the head of the family. The top 3 hens will periodically ‘crouch’ when I enter the back garden. It’s the sexual availability position that hens do when a sexy rooster comes along. I am most definitely not a rooster - sexy or otherwise. I believe that they are actually doing a couple things that reinforce flock hierarchy; firstly it’s only the top hens who get to breed, and secondly that they are showing that they recognise my position as both ‘outside’ the coop (roosters often sleep away from the nesting hens) and the provider of the delicious foodstuffs. But, interesting that they do not crouch when my son who is on breakfast scraps to hen house duty is around, or to any other person but me...
    Of course over time the chooks have come to also enjoy the cuddles they get when they crouch, and the occasional meal worm surprise... so their submissive behaviour actually reinforces each hen’s place in the pecking order as well as leading to extra yummy treats. Chickens are amazing (and so are ostriches)

    Hahahaha that opener, her face was priceless. I believe more likely to be one of two: the dance off. I've seen birds get all featherly exibisionist when saying "I'm the boss" but I wouldn't put it pass the snuggles. And just thought they could get so extra benefits. Like the pandas that fake their pregnancy.
    But awesome episode.

    Just out of curiosity, when humans do some kind of physical exercise, they sweat and that give off loads of smell, right? And smell is one of the flirty attraction things that's really important to us. So if animals do a big elaborate feather dance, it could do multiple things at once: attract visual attention, of course, but it could also generate and spread body odor, especially when you're an ostrich waving around your gigantic feathery bits, those move a lot of air. Odor would at least be a way to check out your feathery crush's body chemistry.

    I believe it was to assert dominance just like when certain males of the same species mounts another one of the same gender. It's showing dominance over that animal. Pecking order per say. That dance is the bird's choice of how it establishes dominance instead of mounting. I think an ostrich rancher would rather be danced at than mounted by a 300 lb bird...lol

    • @keneasley33
      @keneasley33 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bird's telling the rancher.." You're my prison punk." Instead of out right humping his leg..lol
