5:53 This is the reason why my father was furious out of his mind when I decided to not go on to the medicine or engineering career path. He believes that wealth AND reputation is much more important than one's passion so he'd keep trying to persuade me to pick something that can be guaranteed to provide a stable income when I know, for a fact, that if I choose the career path I do not like, I might end up with a lot of mental health issues
Hi, Sana!! I'm also trying to make my own decisions about my career. My parents say I can do whatever I want but in fact pressure me toward certain paths. It's understandable because they grew up with a strong need for security, but I have different needs and want a change. Hope you find lots of success doing the things you love.
Note, Qin Shihuang didn't establish a monetary system, we had that for dynasties before that. He just standardized money across the kingdoms in China to facilitate trade.
Yep, the 2nd and 3rd part is good. But I think the first part does not apply to chinese diaspora who are few generations in wealth, even though they are also showing the same behaviour towards money and as opportunistic behaviour as the one in the chinese mainland.
When my family moved to our new house 5 years ago my dad put my study table at a specific corner and I asked him why he said cuz that space would help me to concentrate according to fengshui and I’m like .-. Dude
A few things to note: - Media representation and the news tend to focus on the very rich mainland Chinese - Those are also the people that get to do business/ study/ travel outside, so those are the people that other countries are exposed to And finally --- the perceptions do not hold up the same way for diaspora/ overseas Chinese who do not share the same recent history as Mainland China Once again - great content!! :)
Their obviously gonna focus on the mainland as there thats the overwhelming majority of the Han ethnicity and thats what most foreigners think of when referring to Chinese people.
i think it needs to be more specific, we as a group love financial stability, which is completely different than loving money in my opinion. If we actually love money so much, we'll be promoting more entrepreneurial culture like starting your own company, pioneer into new technology and creating new demand, invest in the stock market. Instead of advocating for stable career like engineer and doctor and invest in "safe" asset like real estate. The earning ceiling of these "high risk high reward" careers are several order of magnitude higher than those "financially stable" career like engineer, lawyer and doctor. But yet if we try to purse these career, our parent would definitely be against it, despite the much much much higher earning potential. A lot of time, even if you succeed in these high risk/high reward career, Chinese parents would still want you go to back to financially stable career. I think it's more accurate to say they love financial stability way more than they love money. Even in the dish washer clip they shown, if they truly love money, they would realize the opportunity cost of not use the dish washer to save time, time that they could spent on developing a new business idea, grossly overshadow the benefit of water/electricity bill saved. And would opt use a dishwasher or just hire a house keeper, and use the extra free time to expand their business and earning several order of magnitude of greater money than the bill saved. It's more of an obsession with financial stability than actual purse of money imho.
Money is nothing. We won’t have any more space of improvement if we abuse money. Those Chinese were like picky and spoiled children to own all toys by themselves.
I really wish more of this content was on mandarin. I'm looking for channels to practice my listening while enjoying good content and this is great content.
You are not looking at the correct channel. This is more for people of Chinese culture who are rediscovering their heritage, or for non-Asian people to learn about the Chinese culture. To practice listening Mandarin, you are better off watching Chinese dramas with subtitles or trying to translate Chinese songs
oooh that's why my dad keeps insisting to buy an apartment for me cuz then potential dates would "be more interested"...and I'm just like no that's not how it is....
So, you started talking about a so-called "stereotype" and in the end admit that there is evidence and history behind it. : -) Everyone who has lived in China for some time can testify about it. It is better to be prepared for it, that helps, so thank you for this explainer, hope future expatriates will have a look at it first to smoothen the cultural shock.
High external locus of control. Collectivism. Prosperity theology. Feeling lack of control over their own life. High competitiveness. Putting family and community first in a toxic way that leads to a high focus on hierarchies, honor and "saving face". Focus on conformity and discipline over standing out and exploring. No other way to express themselves.
Nice series ! Where is this channel based though ? What intrigued me is the commentator who sounds like a Malay lady from either Singapore or Malaysia covering a “Chinese” series
But generally speaking in the US people value other things more than money. I had a friend who was making 70k, she felt it was the right time to move on, took a job that pays 45k a year. This will never happen in China and except if you have a chance to make more.
It comes from genes. China has been such a big country. Non-money-obsessed culture has a history of collective action and warfighting. We're talking about wholesale mobilization. While China has a tumultuous history, it had long peaceful periods during which collective action was not required. During those periods, the Chinese compete with one another for money. Consider this: once China has been unified, it has no equal-size competitors. So, the Chinese turn inward and fight for money.
Chinese people are obsessed with money? Have you ever heard of these people and their obsession with maximizing profits ie Capitalism? Those guys have a healthy relationship with wealth right 🥴
WHY? Very stupid question. Can u live without money in this world? If so u hv weapons and When u r hungry, can u eat Yr guns? Chinese appreciate money bcoz they work very hard for it. Unlike the west, their money comes easy, "social welfare".
7:13 These banknotes are from a former puppet state (Empire of Manchuria) occupied and colonized by Japan during 1932 to 1945. You can see on them "大日本帝国 Empire of Japan". They represent imperialism, foreign invasion and humiliation for all the Chinese and therefore shouldn't be used in a video about Chinese culture. I strongly suggest you delete that part. Thank you!
I live in Vietnam. Many of us think that some Chinese kill Vietnamese to take internal organs (heart, liver, ...). Even now, our children will heard from adults: I will sell you to Chinese, in case children don't obey adult. Hope that Goldthread have video about this story.
I believe you. Golden triangle has a lot of chinese triad activity. They even moved to mexico to help the cartels move money. Chinese people will do anything for money.
While many of the things you said about the obsession are correct the reasons you used to explain couldn't be more shallower than this...maybe this is what happens when you try to explain a cultural thing by doing "one Google search at a time"...The whole premise of what Buddha was trying to teach was to stay away from material things or attachments and you say Buddhism is the reason for the wealth obsession 🙄🤔😳....for god sake he is the prince who gave up all material pleasures of life😡😡😡....the concept of Karma doesnt say if you are born into a rich family you have done Karma, are you guys listening to the how nonsensical that logic sounds...😖😖 And lastly many cultures across south east Asia, India, Arabian peninsula and old times Rome were all great trading societies do you see them obsessed with wealth ??? I'm saying this to explain how silly and shallow your explanations are and all you did was just to add to the stereotyping Chinese people more than explain why it is so...and I am not even Chinese bit someone who lived long enough to know this

😔 Why is China so flawed nowadays?

True story:
I had a Chinese classmate who named himself *MONEY* 💵💸😂
fun fact: ronnie chieng's surname, Chieng, literally means money in mandarin
Okay we just googled it and you're right. Mindblown
It’s true.
Ask why "WE" are obsessed with China, if we deserve to laugh at China.

B4 Qin Shihuang how many dynasties were there?
@@laicheewai8264 夏,商,周,春秋战国
It's not a stereotype, it's truth. Other people work to live, Chinese people live to work. That's the difference.
Money doesn't bring happiness, but it does bring freedom.
the chinese would sell their freedom for more money
That last section on the relationship of money in their history was really insightful. Nice vid!

Love this series. Keep up the great work and best wishes and happiness. What ever you do today have a FANTASTIC ONE
Chinese people invented banknotes! xD
This channel should have millions of subscribers, great content.
When my family moved to our new house 5 years ago my dad put my study table at a specific corner and I asked him why he said cuz that space would help me to concentrate according to fengshui and I’m like .-. Dude

They are stingy as hell
my dad was like when u buy a house and want a water fountain hire a Feng shui master LOL i would be so clueless
These are really great videos!

Yes I grew up Chinese I’m obsessed with money
If everyone in the world were like the chianse, the world would be a horrible place.
Totally ...
People who are obsessed with wealth and money are shallow.
It’s the most important thing in life to survive everything needs aExchange so it’s just a way of life
The reason why we live is to survive it doesn’t matter how we survive but money is key to survival in this age

We love money so much that we literally have a God of money

In defense of Buddhism, love of wealth and material items only causes you dukkha and in the end binds you to the wheel of Samsara.
What kind of question is that? Who doesn’t like money? U should ask Every American

Yes it has been from many years ago.
Didn’t know wanting money was a cultural thing, I thought it was just called capitalism.

人生应该有更值得的东西去追求。现实是:只想着钱并不会让人变得更富有,只会诞生出众多短视、浮躁又惶惶不可终日的可怜人。
