"From the age of 11, Elton John was my biggest hero. I loved his music, had all his albums and I hoped one day I'd play the piano like him (I still do). When I asked to be involved in this project and was given the choice of a track it was like being asked 'would you like to fulfill a dream? would you like to be Rocket Man?' ... yes, I would." - Kate Bush
Elton John had an album of others covering his songs. Kate's was the first single he released off that album. He also said, that at his wedding, out of the 600 famous people in attendance, the only one everybody wanted to meet, was Kate.
Very interesting challenge! Kate Bush's version was part of a tribute album for Elton John/Bernie Taupin's work and Elton John loved so much Kate Bush's version that it was chosen as the single to represent this tribute. On the B-Side, she also covered "Candle in the Wind". Long time ago, in a newspaper (I think it was the Guardian), there was a poll in which they asked their readers to choose the best cover version of all times and KB's "Rocket Man" went first! NOW, you really have to react to Kate Bush and Elton John's duet called "Snowed in at Wheeler Street" (from Kate Bush's album '50 Words for Snow"). In an interview I read, Elton John was asked which song he ever recorded was the most challenging for his voice and he replied Kate Bush's "Snowed in at Wheeler Street". You have to listen to it as his singing has never sounded so beautiful and emotional. Great lyrics too, as always with Kate Bush. I couldn' really choose between both versions because Elton John's definitely iconic, but I think Kate's version is so different and interesting as she really crafted it like one of her songs and never tried to copy it. Now, if you really want to compare a cover version for which she's undoubtly the winner, try "The Lord of the Reedy River" by Donovan. She transformed a good enough song into a magical piece. Just wonderfull and so mysterious.
Elton's version is a classic, but my vote goes to Kate. Kate and Elton are very good friends and she was thrilled to be ask to cover one of his songs for the Elton John / Bernie Taupin tribute album "Two Rooms." Kate even got to choose which song to do: Kate said: "From the age of 11, Elton John was my biggest hero. I loved his music, had all his albums and I hoped one day I'd play the piano like him (I still do). When I asked to be involved in this project and was given the choice of a track it was like being asked 'would you like to fulfill a dream? would you like to be Rocket Man?'... yes, I would. ...And I wanted to do it differently. I do think that if you cover records, you should try and make them different. It's like remaking movies: you've got to try and give it something that makes it worth re-releasing." (Kate Bush Encyclopedia)
There's no "better", without the original, there would be no cover. At Elton's wedding, everyone asked him if Kate was coming. All the mega stars there, but everyone wanted to meet Kate Bush. They're both genius'.

This song is a classic and I really enjoy both versions. To do a cover is not so difficult and to make more people like it is not impossible because you can stay true enough to keep many of the fans of the original, but you can also change it enough to gain many new supporters. The main purpose here for Kate was not to sound better than Elton. She most likely just cared whether her own fans would like it or not. When the three Mexican sisters of *The Warning* were invited to participate in Metallica's anniversary album _The Blacklist_ in order to celebrate its 30 years since release they were told they could turn a song upside down or inside out as long as they stayed true to the original lyrics. Most of the around 50 artists from totally different genres in music still stayed pretty true to the original songs but The Warning took a different path together with the Grammy award-winning pop artist Alessia Cara. They were told they had one week to create and present a song for Metallica and due to Covid restrictions Alessia and The Warning could not meet each other but coordinated via Zoom online. They adjusted their sound to Alessia Cara's line of music and to me it's a totally new song, and I really like it even if I still like Metallica's original. I think that at least one of you will prefer the softer more female touch to the song compared to the original, but hey, I could be wrong. The original music video is beautiful and you can see Alessia being projected on the walls ( _they still couldn't meet in person due to restrictions_ ) but it's not live, just a studio production. Their live video is somewhat different for obvious reasons. The main reason is they can't drag Alessia along for every gig they play it on so they had to take over her parts of the singing except for a few sounds by her I think they kept on a backing track. If you react to one or both of the versions I think it would increase your view stats back to what they were the last time you reacted to The Warning. *Alessia Cara & The Warning - "Enter Sandman" (Official Music Video) - The Metallica Blacklist Album* This is what you get if you listen to it on Spotify. and/or *The Warning - ENTER SANDMAN Live at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX 08/29/2022* This is what you get if you see them perform this live. I think Kate's main motivation for her version was to pay tribute to an artist she'd always admired and looked up to, while also contributing to a whole Elton tribute album along with several other artists, titled 'Two Rooms': "I was really knocked out to be asked to be involved with this project, because I was such a big fan of Elton's when I was little. I really loved his stuff. It's like he's my biggest hero, really. And when I was just starting to write songs, he was the only songwriter I knew of that played the piano and sang and wrote songs. Kate Bush's cover is okay she doesn't come close to Elton John's original song "Rocketman". I have heard a cover of "Your Song" by Ellie Goulding and that was very good, it's a much better cover of one of Elton's songs. Not as good as Elton John's original one. Very few can come close to him. It was used in the Winter Olympics by one of the female figure skaters in 2022. Look up: Higuchi Wakaba performs to "Your Song" by Ellie Goulding/Elton John
