In case anyone's wondering, all the NPC spawning in this episode was 100% authentic, no modding. It really felt like it was glitching out, however I am using the same build of HL2 that was out when I started FM2.

Yeah, infinitely respawning zombies are a thing, and definitely intentional. I was honestly surprised you didn't have your modder patch that out in the name of either realism or ammo conservation, both of which have been priorities in the past.

Yup. And this whole episode was spent stumbling around in circles while eating through ammo on various zombies and crabs. He kept referencing that he was out - first shotgun shells, then magnum rounds. Good call.
The problem being, the gravity gun in Freeman's Mind obeys the laws of physics. Pushing something pushes back on the object as hard as you push it. Firing something with the gravity gun at 20mph should push Gordon back with that EXACT same amount of force. That's how guns work in general anyway. To negate that massive recoil of the gravity gun, Gordon would have to brace his body against strong vertical structures like walls, doors, cars, dumpsters, that sort of thing. That said: *Unless he holds the stock of the gravity gun AGAINST a wall or flat surface, that recoil is going directly into HIM. If he lets the wall "hold" the back of the gun, it'll take the recoil instead. The only issues would be how hard the gravity gun fires. If it fires hard enough to jam itself into drywall or puncture wood, Gordon might be in trouble. If it fires hard enough to break itself apart without Gordon being used as cushioning, he's DEFINITELY in trouble.*
I think my favorite thing about Freeman is that he's utterly brilliant but is utterly incapable of figuring out what is actually going on around him, often stumbling on to the most insane conclusions and refusing to let go of them. Gordon Freeman is never wrong. The WORLD is wrong and it's doing it on purpose!

For those wondering, the film is Assault on Precinct 13, made in 1976. It's basically a zombie invasion movie, but the zombies are just deranged people who belong to a gang/cult.

I would describe it as "okay." Like I said, it's basically a zombie movie, but the zombies are just a crazy street gang. I can't speak for the remake from 2005, or whenever it was.

Been watching this since I was a kid and it was literally released hours before I had my first kid come into the world and it's just monumental to me personally. Not just where I am now, but also how this series has stuck with me through so many changes in life and yet it still has that same charm and quality it's had since that very first episode, this is truly something special indeed.
Ross attention to detail always makes me smile. How Freeman doesnt use the gravity gun as a weapon, cause to him the gameplay cues in half life seem like odd dips in reality.
My favorite moments are where he climbs fences or breaks through doors/gates that you can't pass through in order to bypass the mandatory physics puzzles.
Calling it now, Ross is setting up Gordon running into ammo problems so that he can discover how epic the Gravity Gun is later in the Ravenholm finale.

Just rewatched the whole series the quality hasnt dropped so thats very nice. Alltho there are episodes so old they almost feel nostalgic so they have that going for them.
We're meant to think that Gordon running low on bullets is to set up for him finally using the gravity gun. But knowing him, he'll go through the mines exclusively with the crowbar. He's not going to use the gravity gun until he has literally no other option during the finale.

The best thing about this episode is based on the level design in Ravenholm, it DOES make sense that this is some sort of game show/obstacle course made by Gregori.
As someone who has been watching Freeman's Mind since his developmental years, I can confirm that listening to the dialogue has had an adverse effect on my own inner thoughts. Which is to say instead of thinking inside of my head, I externalize all of my thoughts by talking like a pirate and constantly screaming at the slightest inconvenience.
I started watching this when i was 9 or 10. I am 24 now. This series has been the one of the few things that was constant throughout my life and has got me through some incredibly tough times. Being bullied in elementary school, moving around multiple times, growing up poor, the passing of my father. My first breakup, my first job, depression. This series is an integral part of how my sense of humor developed, i was watching it years before i even got my first laptop in 2012, i remember i went and mowed yards and then rode my bike 8 miles into town to buy a steam card and then 8 miles home to buy my first video game. Half-life. Thank you Ross. Your kinda a HUGE part of growing up for me. Its amazing that I still get to experience the childlike joy of seeing a new episode coming out in my mid 20s. This series is something truly special to me.
Or Bethesda. They really dropped the ball on Starfield. I can forgive a lot of things - I've enjoyed indie games that were mechanically worse - but a story driven rpg with lazy writing? That's like having a bolt action with low accuracy, or a pneumatic rifle with non-reusable ammo. Sure, a lot of effort was made, but they clearly made no attempt to be good at the one thing they were allegedly good at. For all of Half Life's quirks and datedness, AF can only make good content out of it because it actual has usable content.
Let's be fair; Disney and the AAA games industry have fallen so far from grace than a child could write and design better than all of them combined. Ross has it EASY to beat them, but his only focus is playing the game with a fun commentary that isn't half-baked. He's one of the few reasons I stay on TH-cam, or even watch things in general. Good creatives exist, just not where shareholders and executives are involved.
If you told me back in 2008 that Freeman’s Mind would be still going strong as ever in 2023, I never would’ve believed it. …nor that there’d still be no half life 3.
The fact that he reflects back to when he crawled through the floating alien spores spotlights this series's strength of not just focussing on important plot relevant topics, yeah crawling through those floaty things would be concerning because it's actually HIM, his mind like as if he was lucid through this whole experience and I know that's the whole point but Ross does such a good job at writing that into these videos that i can hardly imagine someone else would do a better job. Good job Ross.

Fun fact, I started watching this series in High School, it kept me going through college, I never missed an episode in Seminary, and I still watch new episodes now that I’ve been married for 5 years and have 2 kids. It might be one of the most sporadically constant things in my life.
7:45 I like that at this point, Gordon is so numb to it all he can kite around a zombie like its nothing, the presence of an alien zombie doesnt break his stream of thought or even cause him to kill it.
And when he does use it, he's gonna wonder why he can't just punt the zombies directly, or steal guns off the Combine directly (before the Citadel), be agonized over the high kick it has whenever he punts things, and yet no matter how badly he wants to get rid of it he KNOWS that he knows he'll probably need it later and complain about how much room it's taking up that could be used for more ammo (and drugs), and will just try to keep restocking on ammo down the line. And then when it gets uberfied with cosmic science laser cautions, he'll go mad with power with it. That part ought to be out in like maybe 15 years, give or take.
@@jessegd6306 Considering that FM2 is being produced at a rate of about 3 episodes a year and that this part of the game is maybe one third of the way through, 10 years would be my optimistic prediction. That says a lot. It says even more that I'll almost certainly still tune in to see it.
I would like to think he is using God-Mode for the most part because there have been moments throughout the series where Gordon has climbed ledges and gotten into areas that you normally aren't suppose to get into without solving a puzzle if at all. There was one or two areas where you are suppose to figure out some sort of physics puzzle or something to access the next area and Gordon has either bypassed it or brute-forced it through methods you normally couldn't do in the game naturally.
What you get from supply crates depends on your current health/armour/ammo. If you have lots of it crates contain less, if you're low crates contain more. Seeing as he hardly ever finds health/armour in crates I think he has godmode enabled.

The week this was uploaded 6 months ago I was really sick for a few days. I took some time to catch up on Freeman's mind 2 which I had been neglecting for a while. It was hella fun. Now this video is 6 months old. Makes me think to back then and think about everything I've gone through in the past few months and how different my life is now. Crazy.
I remember getting so stuck on this section when I first played it. Up on the catwalk, out of ammo, a sea of zombies in the streets below. Real sweaty gamer moment.
I got lucky on my first pt. Figured the path because i snooped around looking for ammo and realized i needed to move stuff to get through. I mean, i found the hidden room on that level on my first play through. IRC, when the game was out, it took a bit for people to find it.
I started watching these videos back nearly 10 years ago and what hooked me was your comment in episode 2 "You're in the barrel"... i laughed so hard my sides hurt.
I like the fact that this series has spent over ten years showing a week from Gordon's perspective.
We need to go for 20 so that we get the full Gordon Freeman immersion, a few days in the span of 20 years.

Just rewatched the whole series the quality hasnt dropped so thats very nice. Alltho there are episodes so old they almost feel nostalgic so they have that going for them.
Strong vibes of "I didn't know I was supposed to use the new gravity gun". Which mirrors my first experience very accurately. downright nostalgic.
It's always nuts hearing or seeing the little details- like water dripping off Gordon when he climbs out of the tank- that are added to these videos.

We're meant to think that Gordon running low on bullets is to set up for him finally using the gravity gun. But knowing him, he'll go through the mines exclusively with the crowbar. He's not going to use the gravity gun until he has literally no other option during the finale.

The best thing about this episode is based on the level design in Ravenholm, it DOES make sense that this is some sort of game show/obstacle course made by Gregori.
I love how Gordon is trying to make sense of the enemy respawning on him.
As someone who has been watching Freeman's Mind since his developmental years, I can confirm that listening to the dialogue has had an adverse effect on my own inner thoughts. Which is to say instead of thinking inside of my head, I externalize all of my thoughts by talking like a pirate and constantly screaming at the slightest inconvenience.
I started watching this when i was 9 or 10. I am 24 now. This series has been the one of the few things that was constant throughout my life and has got me through some incredibly tough times. Being bullied in elementary school, moving around multiple times, growing up poor, the passing of my father. My first breakup, my first job, depression. This series is an integral part of how my sense of humor developed, i was watching it years before i even got my first laptop in 2012, i remember i went and mowed yards and then rode my bike 8 miles into town to buy a steam card and then 8 miles home to buy my first video game. Half-life.

Or Bethesda. They really dropped the ball on Starfield. I can forgive a lot of things - I've enjoyed indie games that were mechanically worse - but a story driven rpg with lazy writing? That's like having a bolt action with low accuracy, or a pneumatic rifle with non-reusable ammo. Sure, a lot of effort was made, but they clearly made no attempt to be good at the one thing they were allegedly good at.
For all of Half Life's quirks and datedness, AF can only make good content out of it because it actual has usable content.
Let's be fair; Disney and the AAA games industry have fallen so far from grace than a child could write and design better than all of them combined.
Ross has it EASY to beat them, but his only focus is playing the game with a fun commentary that isn't half-baked.
He's one of the few reasons I stay on TH-cam, or even watch things in general. Good creatives exist, just not where shareholders and executives are involved.
As a massive Star Wars fan, it hurts how true this is.
If you told me back in 2008 that Freeman’s Mind would be still going strong as ever in 2023, I never would’ve believed it.

The fact that he reflects back to when he crawled through the floating alien spores spotlights this series's strength of not just focussing on important plot relevant topics, yeah crawling through those floaty things would be concerning because it's actually HIM, his mind like as if he was lucid through this whole experience and I know that's the whole point but Ross does such a good job at writing that into these videos that i can hardly imagine someone else would do a better job.

Fun fact, I started watching this series in High School, it kept me going through college, I never missed an episode in Seminary, and I still watch new episodes now that I’ve been married for 5 years and have 2 kids.

7:45 I like that at this point, Gordon is so numb to it all he can kite around a zombie like its nothing, the presence of an alien zombie doesnt break his stream of thought or even cause him to kill it.
I feel like Ross is having Gordon run out of bullets as an excuse to use the gravity gun
And when he does use it, he's gonna wonder why he can't just punt the zombies directly, or steal guns off the Combine directly (before the Citadel), be agonized over the high kick it has whenever he punts things, and yet no matter how badly he wants to get rid of it he KNOWS that he knows he'll probably need it later and complain about how much room it's taking up that could be used for more ammo (and drugs), and will just try to keep restocking on ammo down the line.
And then when it gets uberfied with cosmic science laser cautions, he'll go mad with power with it. That part ought to be out in like maybe 15 years, give or take.
@@jessegd6306 Considering that FM2 is being produced at a rate of about 3 episodes a year and that this part of the game is maybe one third of the way through, 10 years would be my optimistic prediction. That says a lot.

In-universe, he's not being injured much thanks to the armour... or he doesn't realise god mode's on because you would assume it was the plate too.
I would like to think he is using God-Mode for the most part because there have been moments throughout the series where Gordon has climbed ledges and gotten into areas that you normally aren't suppose to get into without solving a puzzle if at all. There was one or two areas where you are suppose to figure out some sort of physics puzzle or something to access the next area and Gordon has either bypassed it or brute-forced it through methods you normally couldn't do in the game naturally.
What you get from supply crates depends on your current health/armour/ammo. If you have lots of it crates contain less, if you're low crates contain more. Seeing as he hardly ever finds health/armour in crates I think he has godmode enabled.

The week this was uploaded 6 months ago I was really sick for a few days. I took some time to catch up on Freeman's mind 2 which I had been neglecting for a while. It was hella fun. Now this video is 6 months old. Makes me think to back then and think about everything I've gone through in the past few months and how different my life is now. Crazy.

I remember getting so stuck on this section when I first played it. Up on the catwalk, out of ammo, a sea of zombies in the streets below. Real sweaty gamer moment.
I got lucky on my first pt. Figured the path because i snooped around looking for ammo and realized i needed to move stuff to get through. I mean, i found the hidden room on that level on my first play through. IRC, when the game was out, it took a bit for people to find it.
