    Thanks a million, I will definitely be referencing this on future projects. This tutorial reminds me of how you’d build a scene to serve a storyboard instead of creating a 360 environment and then composing shots inside it. Great work, really awesome designs

  • @DeepanshuSharmaSTARK1115

    Hey hey I had an idea instead of going in blind and painting shadows by guessing stuff, how about after modelling create a light with a very little spread and high intensity so that the shadows will be black and the light will be white. Bake the shadows and voilà export the textures and you have perfect lighting for all the models and wont have to iterate! I haven't tried it yet but I think it'll work

    • @jamesnoellert
      @jamesnoellert  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the thought! in this case one of the reasons for painting in the shadows (besides being new to blender) was that I was trying to match the shadow shapes in the illustration, which might not be accurate to an actual light source. I'm playing with a shader that can do that hard edge light but using colors from an illustration that I will use for future projects, because yeah I don't want to do more work than I have to :)

    it intrigues me how a whole project(like a short or even a feature film) can be made out of this tool, can you make various shots in a scene or would you need to make lots of different blendfiles in order to do a different scene setup/avoid overloading a project file?

    • @jamesnoellert
      @jamesnoellert  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, I haven't done anything with multiple shots in the same scene but it's probably just adding a new camera and pointing it at some new animation!

    When you bring it into procreate, are you working blind? It seems like a pain to paint the uv islands in procreate only to bring it into blender after spending all that time painting to realize that the shadow is off in one way or another.
    I assume the geometry is simple enough to wrap your head around the lighting scenarios?

    • @jamesnoellert
      @jamesnoellert  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Blender you can export the UV layout as a transparent png, I'll send that to my ipad and then start a new procreate file by importing it, so all the painting happens on a new layer underneath. Then you're exporting that as a jpg with the UV layer turned off, so when you bring it into blender it's just the painting and everything lines up.
      And yeah, the shadows are half imagining how the light would actually work and half what would look better as a composition :)

  • @sp4ky91
    @sp4ky91 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    instead of creating all the shadows on the UVs would it be easier to make the UV without shadow, then use your illustration shader but instead of using a separate texture you'd have the colour of the shadow, and then use a sun light or would that not work?

    • @jamesnoellert
      @jamesnoellert  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I started this before I knew how to get the look with a shader, if I was doing it again I would definitely use actual lights :)

    Hi question, how did u time the image sequence (transparent planes) to animate at the right moment? e.g. Cans falling over when the car drives past it

    • @jamesnoellert
      @jamesnoellert  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jont, if I'm remembering right, there's a setting on the image sequence node that says "offset", that's where you choose how many frames away from 0 your image sequence will start
