Spearfishing huge fish in the fjords of Norway

- Every winter, there is a window where huge fish can be shot in an unusual type of spearfishing. We gave it a go!
"Pipe diving" refers to spearfishing around pipes where discarded water from land based fish farms are flushed out to sea. Bits of food attracts shoals of coalfish, and all the noise attracts bigger predators. 20kg cods can come within range, as well as other beasts.
With fish generally diving deeper during winter, this is a great way to harvest fresh sea food. The meat of anything but the coalfish is superb!
In this video, there were generally little food in the water. The reason for the cloud coming out of the pipes is that fresh water from the pipe mixes with salt water.
We talked with several local workers, who told us that better filtration was mandatory the later years.
This is great for the environment, but also means that "pipe diving" might be a thing of the past.

That monkfish wanted a piece of you guys, such a cool fish. Congratulations on the 14kg cod too, great for winter, I wish we had more cod in the UK.
Yeah he was not happy to say the least. Thanks, but according to the stories about that spot, five spearos could dive down after one another, all coming up with cods bigger than mine. Guess we'll have to return next winter to check again;) No cods in the UK, or just few and far between?

British waters used to have huge Cod, but as they were in open waters they were hovered up , the Fjords offer protection , the Icelanders protected their waters , Britain .....

It depends on the wetsuit,… 1//4” neoprene will keep your body temp pretty stale in very cold water but you will be more buoyant,… that means more weight bullets you must wear….

I couldn't believe that you only had 2 thousand subs. This video alone made me want to go to Norway. @@AkselOrstavik Lingcod, Rockfish, Greenling, Various flatfish. I know of one Halibut taken by a freediver in our waters.

@AkselOrstavik been freedive spearfishing there for ~25yrs. It's not the tropics, but as you know, the deep, dark, and cold waters hold their own challenges and beauty.

Thanks! It’s all what you’re used to;) Most of the time, winter Spearfishing is swimming in the surface and looking down for fish, and the occasional dive to shoot. A lot easier to stay warm then compared to long aspetto dives!

We all used 7mm wetsuits from the Norwegian brand Frivannsliv. Use it all year round, down to ~2 degrees in the coldest dives. During this trip the water temp was surprisingly nice at 5-6 degrees, except for the rivers which were freezing

Man dude that video was dope, I’m not into free diving a whole lot considering I live in North Louisiana USA and all we have are dirty lakes, plenty of fish though. Love fishing and hunting.

How do you swim when there is snow on the ground that’s really crazy to me
On the coldest night dives the gloves freezes on the outside, and the ocean is ‘damping’(?). After that, a bit of snow is no worries;) In all fairness, changing into the wetsuit is cold, but staying an hour in the water us rarely an issue
I dive cold (4c) water most of the year. Any recommendations on gloves/mitts and socks? I use Yazbeck Hunter 7mm socks and VISSLA 7mm mitts, but only get about an hour of dive time at 4c. I also bring hot water in a thermos and pour it into my mitts/socks periodically throughout the day. Any good cold water techniques, online shops, or brands you guys recommend? Thanks!
I use the Norwegian brand Frivannsliv for all my gear. Mostly 5mm gloves, sometimes 7mm mittens, and 7mm socks. The thermos trick is smart, but after your feet/hands are warm, be sure to empty all the water from the socks/gloves. If not it will quickly get cold and you’ll freeze. Same principle as peeing your pants to stay warm.
Other than that I’d say swim a lot. During winter, visibility allows us to scout much larger areas for fish, and it’s more swimming and less diving. Where in the world are you diving? 4C is pretty chilly hehe

Do you think the salmon farms are killing the fjords? I visited Norway a few years ago and they seem so awful. So much junk, medication etc. getting pumped into the water.
That's a difficult question I'm not really qualified to answer, as I dont know for sure. The locations of the pipes are definitely affected. An article called "Laksegriseriet" in a Norwegian newspaper showcased some of the issues very well. The use of antibiotics is very low in Norway, so the issue is mostly welfare and local areas getting suffocated in shit. On the bright side newer ones are a lot cleaner, and older ones are being upgraded to comply with environmental laws

I've spent quite some time longlining and rod fishing in Norway, but this looks like something I'd like to try one day too. Does learning to aim and shoot take a lot of time?
The true challenge lays in mastering the free diving, and getting close to the fish. In the beginning, shooting at targets such as sea urchins or milk bottle is nice to get to know the gun. When comfortable with that, getting close to smaller coal fish and pollocks is seldom an issue, before moving on to bigger fish. Most of the time you’re gonna be quite close to the fish before you pull the trigger, only 2-3 meters. If you speak Norwegian, check out Frivannsliv’s webinars about free diving and spearfishing!:)

How do you swim up to the surface wihout pooping your lunges? Like technique
No special technique, as we’re freediving!
When we draw our breath at the surface, our lungs are full (let’s say 5L). When we dive down to 10 meters, the lungs would be 2,5L. When swimming up to the surface, the lungs expand back to 5L. Same concept further down.
For scuba diving it’s different. If you draw your breath at 10m and fill your lungs with 5L, and swim up without breathing out, the lungs would be 10L at the surface, which isn’t good;)

Thanks, Jason! The coal fish stays in front of the pipes a large amount of time, where they feed on the pellets coming out. That’s why we didn’t bother shooting them, as the meat isn’t as good as the other fish who’s just passing by. If you search for “DN - laksegriseriet”, the first thing you see is a clip with a coal fish filled with pellets and shit. The clip is from an older facility with worse filtration, but the point stand

That’s part of the hunt. Even though we laugh and celebrate, we absolutely have respect for what we harvest:) It got 20 years of roaming the bottom freely before providing us with lots of dinners, resulting in us buying less ‘industrial’ food where animal welfare and environmental impact is a problem.

That looks absolutely freezing! You're perhaps close to northern Maine or Nova Scotia in latitude which I know the water can be 55F in the Summer. You guys must have ice water in your veins!
It’s roughly the same summer temperatures here, maybe a bit higher actually. With good wetsuits the diving is no problem, only changing in and out of the gear. And of course we can’t dive for that many hours in the coldest months.
LOL that that's bad visibility. I'm in New Jersey, we usually have between 1.5-3m visibility. usually on the lower end...we get excited when we have 5-6m. That monkfish is cool as hell though.
Except for the brackish water in the surface, the visibility was supreme;) Old rumors from when the pipes are at full capacity tells another tale
That's the biggest monkfish I've ever seen. And I've worked at a fish plant for years
And believe it or not, two guys shot one at only 5 meters depth last fall, weighing 33kgs! It’s just ridiculous

In the uk we can only wish having fish those size so close to shore. Especially the big cod too. dont get very much cod here more rather codlings
We’re quite lucky here in Norway, absolutely! I’ve never heard of anyone spearing cods in the UK, are they ‘fished out’ or just heading deeper when they get bigger?
@@AkselOrstavik Well im not a 100% sure why but guessing depth of water isnt best, and trawlers, big boats with the nets that collect all fish that are on the bottom, but alot of the biggers one stay more off shore becuase theres not enough to feed on near shore

Hyse, or Sei, is not called pollock i belive, as that is the name for alaska cod. its coalfish for sei, and Haddock for hyse.

HOW do you avoid brainfreeze in this water?
The first minute is painful, but after that it’s surprisingly alright until it’s been an hour and a half;) good 7mm wetsuits help lots!

Biggest I’ve seen someone catch, but the Norwegian record on spearfishing is 13 kg bigger!
I used to go to spots like this with my dad, he would drop some light lamps to the bottom with a 12v battery in a bin and tractor tube.

@@AkselOrstavik very well, we would throw the crabs and fish in the floating bucket too, and It wouldn't flip because the battery was heavy like a keel.

Hey! They have another channel, but I can assure you that it tends to be a lot of big pollocks in Hitra in September. Look for pinnacles, areas with water flow, and drop-offs. We shoot most of them at ~7 meters depth:)
Definitely on dark days. I would put more surfaces time in the video because even with my brightness all the way up i couldn't see anything.
