      While I agree in general, there was no innovation on this one other than the pen holder. How about 1440 instead of 1080? Or smooth diagonal lines. Or a 20" screen--not too big, not too small. ...This was a "me too" product.

    For your line wobble test you could create a benchmark for all products reviewed matching against what many consider the best (wacom)
    *The test could go something like this:*
    Draw a line from point A to point B under fast, medium and slow conditions where fast is 1 sec, medium is 3 secs and slow is 5 secs. Then look at the wobbles produced.
    *Note:* The line length from A to B should be the same distance for added accuracy.

    *PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING BUYING:* I've been using this tablet for about a year. At first I had no issues with it and highly recommended it for the crazy value, but today I'm trashing it. The biggest problem with Veikk is lack of support. Whenever I ran into software/hardware issues, I couldn't find any sort of solution online...
    Live chat is useless, their phone number doesn't work, and none of my emails to Veikk support were answered to this day. My pen began squeaking after the first month. They don't sell replacements, you have to buy the whole tablet again. I wore headphones to ignore it, but what really put the nail in the coffin is after I updated my Windows and Mac, the tablet pen started double-clicking with each stroke, then when I reinstalled the driver, the tablet stopped working on both devices.
    Lines come out wonky in Clip studio paint and Krita. Paint Tool Sai is unusable because the pen treats a tap as a double click. They still haven't released a new driver to fix the issue. I sent another email but I highly doubt they'll answer. It's a real shame because I love everything about this tablet, but it's now unusable and finding help is nearly impossible. I'm using an older Cintiq model as a temporary replacement but I'm moving on to more reliable brands like XP Pen to prevent future stress like this from happening again

    Hi Brad,
    Love the review and the video. The drawings and the shots are awesome and the animations too (more please!). But may I ask you to lower the music please? :D It's a bit distracting. Not the sound effect though (like the bird sound) that is cool. But just the music. Even without music it's perfect.
    Otherwise keep the excellent work! You are my go to artist that I watch on youtube.
    Have a great day!
    P.S: sorry if my english is wrong. It is not my native language :S :D

    I started watching your videos a few weeks ago and while I'm not actively looking for a new tablet, it is nice to see reviews like yours. A somewhat curious side-effect is, that I'm beginning to think that a lot of the problems I noticed in my own drawings aren't due to me messing up they're actually technical problems of the devices. Never thought that would be the case, but I see those jittery lines and I just know: THIS bugs me! Why is this happening!
    Maybe I'll be able to replace my old Cintiq at one point and your reviews will be helpful, so thank you for taking your time to make these videos.

    Amazing review. But lol, I can't live without the two pen buttons, so, more than a con, having those as this one has, is a total PRO (ctrl+z or the like and ALT for color pick are so great for a fast workflow). In Wacom driver at least, u can set the button as "disabled", so, no harm...
    Hearing your comment about jitter, here's my take : First of all, *THANK YOU* , for including the stabilizer test. I've been crying for it in every channel for a while, lol..... And about your comment... ehm....yep, that's true....BUT....mostly in PS. If you check that in Clip Studio Paint (one time purchase, no subscription, heavily focused in comic and illustration, freaking amazing, as you very well know. No idea why don't more ppl use it, is crazy) there the lag is WAY minor compared to PS (and not only in that matter... performance-wise, with a huge canvas, and crazy number of layers, it beats PS down badly. Not a PS hater by any mean! (dislike the "purchase" method, with a passion, tho).
    And man, am I a fan of PS, aaall my jobs, I got'em mostly thanks to my PS skills through so many companies and years.... So, there you have it. Is way less of a concern when used on Krita, or, very specially Clip Studio ( way better in performance than Krita, too. And than practically anything). Other than that... if you were getting, the lines' lag, with only 10 smoothing ( I tested the CC 2018 trial very intensively, and configured it deeply for best performance, crazy level of it, too) , and getting that lag...something is off. Might be the machine is quite under-powered (could be) , as mine is ultra old from almost 10 years, tho was a middle-high machine in its day. OR, maybe likely, is not everything configured to crazy performance (is a crazy digging in several system matters, I''ve heard of few people attacking all those fronts, to that level, with these issues. With older PSs, it was not needed. But CCs eat the hardware. Indeed, happens kind of since CS 6, then that did grow exponentially in the CC).
    I dunno Mac world, so, can't make assumptions there, but in Windows, I frikin' know the deal, and how a decent modern machine, in live tests, does perform worse than mine no matter what in the painting department, just because of very careful digging for performance in the OS and other matters. (and very careful fine tuned PS prefs. Never ever defaults). What I mean: well configured, PS "10" level of smoothing, should not lag, should be comfortable, and from what I have seen in all these videos, you don't have an style of crazy lines speed, but pretty standard speed ( a bit above the average in some moments), so, should not be experiencing that lag...
    That said... is indeed great if you have there some issue in the hardware, hehe, as then is a tough test for any tablet, and not the usual thing other reviewers do, setting all in a super shiny high end machine noone has, and of course, once the average person purchases whatever the tablet, experiences struggles that were not observed in the reviewer's experience (yeah, so, is better so....) Sorry if am telling you this, but I think it is important to remark that with 10 of smoothing in PS CC 2018, it should be a fresh inking experience.... Anyway, again, if that same tablet , in you own hardware, does not have that lag in CSP or Krita (probably in Krita it will have it) , then there you have it, problem solved. Just people with average machines, IMO, should not use PS ( or, be prepared to fine tune their machine even using a full day for that! If having the know-how for it (rarely)) . Should not anyway due to the pricing model/forced subscription, anyway, but that'd be way much of my own personal opinion, lol.

    It seems like they mashed together the Artisul D16 and the Xp Pen tablets! I'm assuming they made a deal with UC-Logic (manufacturer of pen displays for other companies and parent company of Artisul), or were heavily inspired by them.

      I am torn between this, the GT 191 V2 and Xp Pen 15.6 pro. Seems like the XP Pen display is laminated and generally looks to be within this new generation as sRGB/Adobe color goes. I will be taking mine on the road a lot. Any suggestions on these three as build quality goes?

    • @fpagliarde
      @fpagliarde 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@RiccardoPearlman I Have a GT 191 V2, colors are very Washed out, and the pen on the edge of the device sometimes loses its precision, but since you draw mainly in the middle of the screen, that is not that big of a problem. Now i am interested in the XP PEN 15.6 because of the colors, laminated and precision that might all be a better improvement in exchange of the screen size. :)

    Hey Brad, I love your tablet reviews! As a budget techie I always look out for tech reviews often. I had a question though, I noticed you review pen tablet monitors but what is your computer setup? I've heard a lot of people making budget pen tablets work more responsively with less lag and parallax because they have stronger computers. Have you tried testing parallax and lag on a stronger workstation? Thanks

    Great video Brad!
    In regards to pen jitter, it's a baffling argument to be made; I shouldn't have to use stroke smoothing to fix the shortcomings of hardware, especially when the core function of that hardware is intent on representing a quality line, bridging traditional and digital work as one cohesive whole. Fiddling with software and just "living with it" should never be the right answer. If you are spending 300 dollars on a screen tablet, that core functionality should be rock solid. I don't particularly have a need for things like Bluetooth, tilt, and touch; Those are totally optional in my mind. But there is something inherently aggravating about living with a really strange (and widespread) issue that exists across many on-screen tablets. I can live with some slight parallax, but wobbly, imprecise lines impact the quality of my art, and as a result, my end product suffers.
    It's the equivalent of buying a (slightly) cheaper mouse that decides to dart around the screen and make things impossible to highlight or click with any degree of confidence. No one would put up with that. I tend to draw with a rather slow stroke, and I had two iterations of the Surface Pro tablets that had the same exact issue, and my art ended up looking more like fanart for Ed, Edd, and Eddy than anything even remotely resembling my own style.
    And so the question I ask when I see a tablet like this is: Who is this for? you can't draw overly fast and get some quick gestural lines down because of the crazy parallax, and you can't do much precise inking and coloring because of the obnoxious pen jitter. The only positive thing I can say is that I am happy that screen tablets are getting cheaper and cheaper, but people have to be careful.
    It reminds me of your review of the pixel slate, where it became immediately apparent that the thing was sort of marketed towards creatives, but drawing is not a strong suit, and the options given were super limited, and massive concessions had to be made for the drawing experience to be anything close to adequate.
    It's weird to me that in (almost) 2019, we are still having issues with pens on displays. Microsoft has promised over and over again to fix these nagging issues. In fact, I believe it was your video of the surface pro 3 that alerted me to this issue in the first place. I thought I had gotten a defective one. Hopefully, things change, and things get better. And while I am a huge windows guy, I look at something like how the apple pencil works and see them put out a nearly flawless first gen product on their first go.
    As of now, I am looking at the LG Gram 2-in-1 that has a Wacom digitizer that was seen online recently. We will have to wait and see.
    Keep up the good work! love your videos!

      Btw even wacom pen displays have Jitter. And this Jitter shouldnt be a problem while ur inking sth. U can fix the Jitter if u draw in an other wise. Zoom in and Zoom out, like u should do and the problem is away.

    Hi Brad, thanks a lot for this review. It's clear and done very well; congratulations for your drawings, so smart! I'm considering buying this Veikk tablet, so I'd have a couple of questions for you.
    First : does the fact of the parallaxe consists in a problem when you draw? ...I mean about precision; is that a bug you can fix or you just have to get used to it?
    Second : are the short-keys on the left of the display touch-sensitive or pressure?
    Many thanks in advance for your answer.
    Bye, Luca

    i have heard that xp pen has low initial activation threshold just as good as wacom, but it doesn't have a bonded display. Huion on the other hand has bonded display but initial activation force is even higher than that of Ntrig/Surface crap. So, in short Wacom has its cozy niche cut out, and it's gonna stay there for a long time to come. I have not seen ipad pro event yet, i am hoping that they make ipad pro a real pen display for Mac. What Astropad does utilizes too much resources on the ipad pro side, what i want is direct hardware connection like the one that wacom makes with a pc or mac.

    I think if you're gonna test jitter using a ruler, you should draw the line with the tip of the pen right up against the ruler. Every time I see someone use a ruler to test jitter in their videos, there's a gap between the tip of the pen and the ruler, which could lead to human jitter in the lines.

    • @thebradcolbow
      @thebradcolbow  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I like that advice.
      Another thing worth mentioning. I use a wooden ruler because sometimes metal throws off magnets but the wooden ruler isn't 100% straight like the metal ones. So I think I'll always get some bumpyness so a lot of these test are trying put onto video a gut feel I have after testing dozens of these things.

    • @3polygons
      @3polygons 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thebradcolbow It's easily seen when the 'ink' is going for their own free-style dancing on its own, and how there's no bump in the wood right there, and the tip had no twist or whatsoever (even if does in other moments). There's where you totally catch the hardware's shameful fault...Not gonna explain, but there are ways to download the video and check it zoomed-in crazily so there's little doubt left....

    Veikk or XP Pen? I was going to buy the $350 XP Pen tablet and since the Veikk is just under 300 with the $50 off, I thought it was a good comparison. I think I'm leaning towards XP Pen a bit more just because the company is pushing more of their products out on the market.

    • @Lilyium
      @Lilyium 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd go for XP pen as there are more reviews for that and it also has more recognition thus service might be a tad bit better but Brad's review topped so many others I'm somewhat persuaded by Veikk. Huion is also a suggestion. :)

    Can the tablet be flipped or is the stand solid? If latter, that's automatic not-going-to-even-consider-buying-it for lefties like me.
    I also felt that this review didn't spend much time on the product especially considering it's (to me at least) an unknown name on the growing tablet market.
    I don't know if such a video already exists but I wish you made a video to explain drawing tablets and screens for beginners, their differences and what to look out for when buying one especially parallax and jitter tests and reasons why you do them, I'd link to everyone when I'm asked about buying advice.

    I picked one of these up today, and had an absolute nightmare with the drivers. (Using Clip Studio Paint and Windows 10) The fact that the only one they had was 1.0.0 suggests they’re not upgrading them. I’m not sure if it was Windows 10, CSP or the nVidia drivers making them have a tantrum but I ended up not bothering and just going with plug in and play which worked fine, and with excellent pressure sensitivity and accurate calibration.
    Also, for it to work properly, I found I needed to have it on Extend Display instead of Duplicate (I can’t do duplicate because my other one is 4K) with duplicate I found I had to set my Veikk as the main display otherwise it started acting like a screenless tablet.
    Anyone else have these issues too?

      Rosiea if you want something that’s stationary at home, maybe this would be the best for a workspace. However if you want to draw anywhere with mobility, then maybe you’d want to go for the iPad. Photoshop is coming to iPad next year so you won’t be missing out on that. But if you’re using zbrush or toonboom- heavier programs then you might want to go for the tablet in the video!

Wait until tomorrow to see what Apple has upgraded with their new announcement for iPads though!
