- The M1128 Stryker Mobile Gun System was introduced into service with the United States Army in the 2000s. Built as a sort of stopgap solution to the failure of the XM8 AGS, the MGS earned a fair bit of criticism for itself. The autoloading system had issues, there were bugs with the software, and its ammunition capacity was fairly limited. Opinions among the soldiers that crew it are mixed, but it has survived for a fairly long time.

I've seen it stated before where protection from x calibre MG rounds actually meant protection up to a certain distance (so not point blank)

Yup. It’s rated to stop 14.5x114 B-32 API at 200 m. So not only it’s from a distance but also only against steel core rounds. BS-41 has a tungsten core and penetrates 1.4 times as much. So at point blank distance it can only stop a 50 cal at most.

The protection level is based on STANAG levels of protection going from 1-6. Stryker is a Lvl 4. Which protects up to what a previous comment said
I work on these vehicles in real life. Our troop door took a .50 like a champ back last NTC rotation.

Yeah I'd love to play a clean and sleek Stryker, would probably be pretty nice for its mobility too.
I really wish the "cage" was an add-on armor modification, not the default configuration. It just looks wrong to me, not to mention the advantage of lightening a vehicle like this in War Thunder.
You can literally strip away the cage armor in the CDK without it looking weird too, gaijin is just being lazy and trying to make you suffer
Funnily enough maybe it was luck, but I've had cage armor protect me against two Khrizantema missiles while in the AMBT
New update will allow us to remove it finally
My first three years in the army I served as an MGS crewman. When I saw the bit about the unreliability of the auto loader I had to laugh and remember a time when a 105mm round landed in the lap of one of my friends while trying to reload. The radio transmission between him and the range tower was quite hilarious lol

MGS Stryker, the only thing I knew about it is the fact that it's the one thing that people point to when talking about Modern Tank Destroyers....even though that wasn't its role.
It's even sillier when you consider that there *is* a Stryker tank destroyer that isn't in the game. They already have the Stryker chassis modelled, and it seems like a no brainer to add the ATGM Stryker. They could also go ahead and add the Stryker Dragoon while they're at it.
In game it really is a struggle to use. It's only two advantages are the m900 and the gen 3 thermals. In almost every single match it's only real use is as a hull down sniper which is difficult anyway because it's so tall. If they just gave the slat armor a toggle and made its fun depression a little better on the side and maybe idk made the transmission work it would be a totally useable tank in game.
Tranmissions are one of Gaijin’s many Achilles heels. I don’t know why they can’t, or want, properly model transmissions. So many vehicles in game, Type 10 for example, are hindered by poor transmission modeling.
@7shelties it's one of the most infuriating things in the game, honestly. Trying to get the Stryker up a 25 degree incline, fully aced, with a running start is impossible. If you get stuck in a hole with that thing, you're dead. Same with the fiat cars (not the r3 of course).

@@supersarge24 they don't mean much when you can't go up hills, you're slow af, have no armor, poor ammo storage, your silhouette is huge, and gun depression is worse than some Russian tanks because of its height.
@@supersarge24 3bm42 and gen 2 for the TURMS at the same br, decent armor, CITV, faster autoloader, consistent acceleration, and is a premium.
The only downsides are top speed, gun handling, and weak hull armor against 120mm guns. All which can be worked around by not being dumb

I'd argue that it needs to have the original version of the C76A1 (M735 I think) so it can do actual damage before finally getting the M900
Reload speed its good. Whatever is not the cannon or the optics, sucks

All through OSUT there was a rumor that the Stryker couldn't shoot its gun 90° to the side bc it would roll over.
When it would fire all four tires on that side would lift up off the ground. Crazy stuff.
There was also a rumor that if someone looked at a Stryker wrong way, it would spontaneously combust.

@@Kurogumo and some similar stuff is even modeled in the game. Centauro mgs with 120mm gun literally jumps when shooting to the side, and almost rolls over. Yet Stryker does not even wiggle that much which negates the feeling of the gun’s power.

I love how the Rooikat MTTD with a bustle autoloader that is in line with the breech (similar to Type 90 but with a 105) loads slower in the game than the Stryker MGS does irl. It's also missing the armor in between the crew and the gun. And last but not least it fires DM23 as its best round... on a vehicle from the 2010s.
and it has 1 less crew member than the mk1, which in wt is bad bc you die so much more easily. the only good thing about the mttd is thermals, thats literally it. plus its kinda ugly ngl. i still use it tho, can be okay sometimes. i prefer the mk1 tbh
Was a medic in a Stryker infantry battalion and can attest, they were not highly regarded. They were constantly down for maintenance issues, of the 4 we had two at maximum were operational at any one time. Cool concept, just not a very reliable implementation (like the entire styrker program)
Wow I missed these. Honestly I kinda have a soft spot for the Stryker after Lock N' Load w/ R.Lee Ermey, and I never knew people complained about its autoloader.
Personally I always saw the MGS more as a sort of tank destroyer; lightly-armored and fast but still carrying a big gun to ambush enemy tanks.
Finally I'm not the only person who grew up on Lock N' Load w/ R.Lee Ermey. Rip he was a legend.
Nah, while it was provisioned to deal with tanks it's main purpose was to be general fire-support. Beforehand aside from full blown tanks (which weren't always around) all infantry really had to hit hardpoints were TOWs, which weren't exactly designed for that kind of thing and rather expensive for the job.

It wasn't built to be a tank destroyer it was built to be a fire support vehicle, busting bunkers and enemy infantry.
They quickly found out however, that a Stryker can't do a light tank's job.

0:29 you said the FCS accidentally allowed the gun to strike the engine deck in the rear. I think you meant to just say rear deck or maybe crew compartment roof, since the Stryker has a front mounted engine as you know.
Always wondered why it was called the crew compartment, there ain't no way anyone is going to fit back there
@@Lumadous Well I can't say for sure what it's called on the Stryker MGS, but since it's a variant of the Stryker LAV which carries troops in the back I just used the same language for the area. It probably goes by something different on the Stryker, hence why I said "rear deck or..." Keeping it vague to point out it's a minor error without giving further wrong info.
Back when I was in 3-41 Infantry we got some MGS and being one of the few tankers we got trained up on them. One thing we got drilled into us in training was not to fire over the side on an incline. Not sure if it was an actual risk but we were told they had an issue of rolling from firing over the side on uneven ground. I hate those things, getting pulled off the M1 to be on the MGS really soured any like I had for them.
We had a 2ID unit attached to us in Iraq in 07. Their strykers were getting torn apart with IEDS so much that across from our CHUs was a junkyard with 8-9 hulls. AQI was using stacked soviet AT mines daisy-chained together that could blow the turrets out of m1s and disintegrate Brads down to their power packs, what the hell did the army think was going to happen to a stryker? There's a reason we started calling them "Kevlar coffins".

Let's not forget the mgs should almost always flip over if you fire it's gun when pointed over the side of the vehicle
I love these videos because you can learn so many little things about these vehicles what work what didn't work what could be done to improve it what's not properly represented in game and what's missing.

They made the armor mandatory to artificially gimp the vehicle. I really wish we could remove it as it very rarely saves the vehicle and the increased mobility would be far more advantageous.

Also when lowered completely, the safest speed is 15mph, going faster WILL cause a wheel to fall off or a fire.
U should make more vids on U.S. tank news or any other armored vehicles, like the one u did on Mobile Protected Firepower. The only videos I see on TH-cam are "NEW AMERICAN SUPER TANK, WHY RUSSIA SHOULD BE SAD" and its a robot voice readin an article. Very few good channels that actually cover updates on those programs

When I was in, the MGS was pos. For the 30 or so we had in 3CR, about only 4 ever were up and working. In general it was a failed project, bad rear suspension(it was the stock configuration suspension) blew out, and the auto loader failed regularly. When the Army came out and said it was a failure and said it would be retired by the end of 2022, I breathed a sigh of relief for all stryker mechanics. Hopefully the dragoon is more reliable.

The second-hand Stryker MGS turrets might end up finding their way to Taiwan. There is currently a proposal to put them on the 1st-generation Clouded Leopard platform as an interim wheeled light tank.
Although I do not know (I am not being sarcastic here but genuinely don't know) if the ROC Army is as enthusiastic about it as the contractor who came up with this proposal is.
@@dy031101 Knowing the large amount of electrical issues that turret had, probably not the best idea. Though Taiwan will pretty much buy anything that's offered to them. Honestly if they were smart they would focus on improving and enlarging their SAM defense(both patriot and manpads), and heavy equipping and training their infantry in both conventional and guerrilla warfare. Having a small amount of high end maneuver warfare equipment like the Abrams or god forbid these shitty MGS turrets will do little as most of this equipment with be a priority for naval-based cruise missiles and airstrikes before a naval invasion anyways.

Man I remember crewing a Stryker, that mention of flipping over alot brings back memories. So many times I have seen them in precarious positions
And don't forget if someone places a head light in wrong during maintenance the whole electrical system gets fried and the vehicle must be gutted and the wiring sorted and fixed.

I'm seeing a trend with these. American tanks seem to be heavily hampered compared to their real life counterparts in warthunder while Russian tanks are usually overstated. How curious.

@@justyourdad4469 like the fCt that in real life its proof against 14.5mm, has adjustable suspension, can and is fielded without slats, has much better depression angles, has a wider variety of rounds, etc. Thats at least 5 positive things. All things that it should have to make it more realistic and most of which are already mechanics in the game. Similar to say the Abrams which is missing many features, armor specs, ammo types, penetration values, etc
@@casematecardinal it's not proofed against 14.5x114. Otherwise it would also stop majority of 20mm rounds that use similar case and propellant volume, but APHE instead of APCR projectiles.

If they made the SLAT armor an addon on in the modifications tab the Stryker would feel way more stealthy and lighter to use.
Don't forget this one. "If crew level is not high enough, chance to start with damaged equipment is more likely, which can increase repair time." And "If the drive is experienced, repair time varies based on crew level overall, due to teamwork needed to replace parts" and "Chance of Transfer Case explosion is significantly higher in MGS, due to overweight on the chassis"

I was at the Yakima training center when they were testing the MGS in 2007. I was driving by the test range when they had a runaway gun the was pretty exciting to watch

I feel sad when ever I hear about the Stryker MGS. Something that pretty much served as a wheeled counterpart to the Abrams had to have so much strife to it.
The one single time I was upset that gaijin didn't make something a modification to be unlocked was the slat armor on the MGS was incredibly disappointed.
Funny thing about the monochrome, speaking from experience?
Visual fidelity can be higher with it in older-style monitors and cameras, as silhouettes can be easier to distinguish with the limited color palette. Unless it's a perfect match, the grays can be sharper and easier to distinguish. One technique for UAV spotting is to use monochrome/IR to display silhouettes, right angles, etc. easier. Though we also had a full-color camera, which made identifying easier. In Sim Battles it would be a disadvantage past initial acquisition though, yes, but in Realistic identifying is just checking for a blue tag beyond 'Hit tank in weak area'.

I know these videos are mostly satire but I would love to have the ability to remove the add-on armour and give it it's historical suspensions systems, perhaps even the spall shields for the ammo.
Oh my god, I so wish we could take the slats off and gain more gun depression towards the sides. It's so miserable with the current gun depression because the thing is so wobbly and tall it's very hard to play with. Suspension control would be neat too, to make it a smaller target. Currently I'd take AGS or XM8 over this because they have better reload and gun depression.

dont forget the APS system. that gaijan even has modeled onto the tank.
Don't forget: every time you fire your suspension will be shifted/"damaged", decreasing accuracy as firing continues and meaning frequent repairs will be needed between bouts of firing

Seeing that fact about the all-aspect protection against 14.5s I'm reminded of the Puma, on which the ERA is supposed to protect against 30mm Auto-Cannons making its front and sides immune to that kind of incoming fire. We'll see how the Puma holds up when the update goes live, and if it doesn't deliver, maybe we'll get one of this type of video for it ;)

The Hydropneumatic suspension struts for the front 4 wheels should be modeled internally, they are rather thick and heavy, and would likely stop at least a 30mm

The delay between a trigger pull and the gun going off gives ma a bit of insecurity. Imagine having a lag in real life and loosing the element of suprise because of that

2:00 technically true but it can't roll with the HMS in the down position because the wheels rub on the hull, also there's no in-betweens it's either in the up middle or down position and the down position is only used for transportation or boresighting. Source: I drive a Stryker

At 1:25 this is not the cooling system for crew but it is for cooling the 3 computer in the stryker.

I actually made a full on post with army sources I cited and everything asking to make the slat armor optional on the forums in the suggestion section and it was denied and so never got cleared for posting which is fun after spending hours researching...
I mean the slats make sense in urban guerilla warfare situations like Iraq. But in near pear combat its just dumb. I mean. Look at the new Stryker Dragoons stationed in Europe I haven't seen a single slat cage.
I honestly really wish canister was a shell type in game, and not just as a gimmick shell. The US 37mm apparently had a pretty potent canister round, and being able to equip that to my M3 Lee or Grant could give it both a viable soft-target round for the 37 (it only gets two rounds; an AP shot and an objectively better AP shot, and as someone who likes ammo adaptability that’s always bothered me) instead of just being limited to HE from the 75, plus a potentially viable AA shell as the elevation of the 37 on the M3 is something like 60 degrees. It’d also be a more reliable shell against fast moving soft targets, as with the spread inherent to canister shells there’d be less chance of missing a rapidly moving target than if you were trying to lead with an HE shell.
And if anyone says gaijin wouldnt add such a specific-use round: we have the 76 shrapnel round already
M1128s are one of those vehicles I hate fighting. Almost as much as the AGS.

The teamates in this game are worse than the enemy because you cant kill them. They always push me out of sniping zones and mobe my shots and get me killed. Its honestly really stressful

@L cage armor didn't do anything. Its just that there was virtually no shrapnel. And it just missed the crew by inches every time.

Yep, these are all reasons that the Advanced Armored Gun System should have been fielded instead of the Styker.
The problem with the realistic series is that having a single mgs is unrealistic. Mgs are almost always operated as a platoon so they should be seen 4 at a time per match.
