  • welcome back to another reading vlog - it took me a little bit but I finally decided to count all the books I own since a lot of you have been asking :) There's also a huge lightning storm at the start of this vlog so if your eyes like mine can't handle the flashing lights please skip to 1:06! I also can't stop smiling and thinking about how extremely charming and magical A Castle in the Clouds was, I ended up loving it so so much. How was your week????

There's this poetry collection called Mother Love by Rita Dove that was published in 1996. I have no idea how that book fell into my hands, but it was an actually interesting and thoughtful collection based on Demeter and Persephone. It is weird how modern poetry almost has a time limit to recommend it, so I've never really talked about Mother Love. But I honestly think you'd like it (at the very least, you'd like it more than that fire kindling calling itself poetry 👀).

I'm so excited that you're reading Castle in the Clouds, Kerstin Gier is one of my favoruite authors :D I would highly recommend her "Dream" triology, it has kinda the same vibe as the Castle but it's set in a fancy British school and it's about a group of mysterious boys who seem to be able to visit other people's dreams and manipulate them!

I miss those kinds of thunderstorms. We do get thunder out here on the west coast, but it's not as common, and when it does happen, it's likely to set large swaths of forest on fire so it's harder to enjoy the experience. sigh. I got a good chuckle out of your comments about the poetry book. I also bought a contemporary poetry book. It wasn't BAD poetry. It was mediocre poetry. A few of the poems were "nice". But it felt like I was reading someone's high school poetry journal AND after a dozen pages I was pretty convinced I was reading the same poem, using the words, just reworked slightly to say the same thing over and over and over... What made it worse was that apparently the author is wildly popular. So that's a depressing thought, that culturally we have such a low bar for the writing arts. Well, to each their own. I gifted the book to someone who was delighted to receive it.

Also you doing the math on how many read/unread books you own really made me feel better about how many books I've bought this year. I mean, I love having a lot of options because I'm a complete mood reader, but things have gotten slightly out of hand these past few months, lol. 😅

So jealous of your stormy weather! We don't get storms like that in my part of the Pacific Northwest US. 😭
I've basically given up on contemporary poetry. I've tried so many times to appreciate it, but it all reads the same to me -- cringey pretentious pseudo-deep prose with arbitrary line breaks that amount to little more than banal aphorisms. The work of truly gifted poets like Rilke, Mary Oliver, and Cummings (among so many others!) has set the standard too high for me.
It's been a while since I last counted my personal library, but I do know that at least half of them are unread. I was trying to whittle that down this year but bought/brought home another 20-30 new books over the summer and completely borked it. 😂 Ah well, at least we're never without something exciting to grab next!

So I overheard the title of the book you talked about in the beginning... and I was like "oh yeah, that sounds like this book by Kerstin Gier" and then you said SOPHIE.
I got so confused because I was pretty sure the girl in Wolkenschloss was not called Sophie. But apparently they changed it when translating it (I'm German).
She's originally called Fanny, and I love this book with all my heart.
And please check out the original cover! It's purple and after you read the book, you will appreciate the detail on it.

Girl, I so understand the post-panic-attack exhaustion. Ugh. I love a good cup of lemon balm tea before bed, especially after a panicky day. It's not a knock-out sleep aid, but it's very relaxing and has a really nice taste and texture. Have you tried it?
I'm so sorry you can't go back to uni this semester. I've been in that place where it feels like your life is on pause while everyone else's is still rolling along, and it truly sucks. But I guess the bright side is that you'll miss the frustration of pandemic-era schooling? 😂 Seriously, though, I've been there, I get it, and setting up a little curriculum for myself and calling it "schoolwork" really helped.
I'm curious to count my own books now. I'm sure it won't be as many as yours, but probably fairly close if I count all the children's books I kept!
