      Anything in the VST world that get's close to this? I could probably emulate with a tape emu vst and vintage sounding delay, but there's nothing quite like this in terms of functionality as far as I know. So if you know anything close... Anyway, some nice textures you created there bruv.

    • @AlexBallMusic
      @AlexBallMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The best tape emulation I've used is U-he Satin. You can't do tape looping / tape speed tricks with it like on the hardware, but I guess you could do that in software. Cubase has an algorithm for repitching based on tape speed.

With the ARP 2600 and it's built in spring reverb I got a sound _almost_ like playing chords but only when you played at just the right tempo. It worked even better with a digital delay pedal.

    I appreciate the effort and I love your videos in general, but you _really_ should not start with long decay phase sounds for this. Please begin with short, percussive sounds to demonstrate the exact sound of the module before moving on to atmospheric, but mushy sounding patches. The way it is, it is very difficult to tell the sound of the dry signal and how much of this is the delay unit.
    Other than that, great work and thank you for going to all the trouble of digging up and featuring these oldies.

    Don't demo delays with keyboard swells, it's impossible to hear the original signal separate from a repeat. Use something with a clear attack, so that each repeat is distinct and its sound quality can be easily assessed. A guitar is ideal, or a percussive synth sound if you only have keyboards.

    This is SOOOOOOO cool. Can't think of a way to punify it, though. My memory reverberates with faint echos of a band I worked with who had an Echoplex. I never used it myself, but I remember the bassist showing me the tape loop inside. If I recall, it only had one play head that you could slide back and forth to provide the echo delay. I also know that Jerry Goldsmith used it more than once on the scoring stage (Alien and Patton come to mind). Question: the tape has to wear out at some point. Where do you get more analog 1/4 inch tape in this age? Is it even still manufactured? Perhaps in small runs, like 35mm motion picture film. Anyway, great video. Love the tune at the end!

      The Echoplex has one of the coolest "futuristic" logos ever. Never used one though.
      Yes, that's right, Goldsmith did run the woodwinds through on in Alien. Became an identifying motif in the score and I was pleased to hear it in one of the more recent sequels.
      Guess they require maintenance, have a lot of moving parts and are bulky, so manufacturers can't see a practical market for them. The El Capistan from Strymon is absolutely excellent though and emulates it very nicely (and in stereo).

    Been waiting patiently for this! This was my band's go-to unit for effects back in the early 80's.

      Did you use external control with it back in the day?

      @Scottie_S 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlexBallMusic Not sure mate. I know that our sound guy had the balanced in and outs going through the desk, but I can't remember what the hell he was doing with the external control. Knowing his attention to detail, I wouldn't doubt that he was using it in one respect or another. Our sound guy was Terry Cooney who was the sound-tech manager with Jands in Sydney, Australia. I haven't seen or heard from him in a bloody long time and you've given me some incentive to chase the old bugger up.

    Skipped to 15 mins - The bass sound / sequence on the MS 20 is probably one of the most satisfying bass sounds heard in my whole life, and that is through my iPhone speaker! - clicks subscribe on the strength of that 10 seconds viewing 😁

      Thank you. I'm fortunate with what I'm able to borrow, which gives me new material to work with.
      Patreon - thanks. I've not considered asking people for donations, but if there was something specific that everyone benefitted from then I'd maybe do something crowd funder esque.
