“Placing last in the Special Group competition in 2015, UNIDOS DO VIRADOURO earned a demotion to the Série A this year. Founded in 1946 in Niterói, the city located across the Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro, Unidos do Viradouro competed in Niterói until 1989, when they joined the main competition in Rio. By 1991, they had earned a place in the Special Group and they maintained their position there for two decades. In 1997, led by famed Carnavalesco (Carnival Designer), Joãosinho Trinta , Viradouro won their first and only Carnival championship to date with the presentation of the theme, “Trevas! Luz! A explosão do universo” (Darkness! Light! The explosion of the universe)”, by Chesney Hearst, Jan 4, 2016 Rio Times.
For the first of the two nights of the 2016 Rio Carnival Samba School Série A Group competitions, VIRADOURO” Samba School is the fifth school scheduled to perform early Saturday morning, February 6, 2016 starting at about 12:00 am.
For 2016, lead by Carnavalesco Max Lopes, the school will present the theme, “enredo”: “O Alabê de Jerusalém: A Saga de Ogundana” (The Alabê of Jerusalem: The Saga of Ogundana).
RIO CARNIVAL 2016, the World’s Greatest Party, will take place in Rio de Janeiro from Friday, February 5th through Wednesday, February 10, 2016. Broadcast throughout the world, Rio’s magnificent Rio Carnival Samba School Parade Championship Competitions of Rio's top twenty-seven (27) samba schools will be the showcase events of the Rio Carnival 2016 celebrations. Over four nights from Friday, February 5 through Monday, February 8, 2016, the Rio’s top samba schools will perform all night into the early morning hours of the following day. What at first glance might just appear to be colorful, music-filled parades, are in actuality ferociously serious competitions involving the best Samba schools in Rio and Brazil, thousands of dancers, singers, musicians, floats and budgets, prize money and endorsements totaling millions of dollars.
For the first two nights (Friday, February 5, 2016 and Saturday, February 6, 2016) of the Rio Carnival Samba School Parade Championship Competitions, fourteen samba schools (7 each night) in the Série A Group (formally “Access Group”, “Group A") will compete in the Rio Carnival 2016 Série A Group Samba School Parade Competitions. The winner of this 2016 competition will be promoted to the Special Group and will participate in the 2017 Special Group Competitions for the Rio Carnival 2017 Samba School Parade Championship.
