    In this video I discuss the Godox AD-S65 and AD-S85 Softbox / octabox. They are Godox mount, so they are proprietary to the Godox AD400 Pro, AD600M, and AD600 (not to be confused with AD600B and AD600BM which feature a Bowens mount). They will also work with the upcoming Godox AD300 Pro
    One massive benefit is the very compact size of the softbox when collapsed, as it is much thinner than the equivalent diameter Bowens mount softbox. This
    This compact design does have some flaws however, as it requires the inner diffusion or inner beauty dish plate be removed to collapse the softbox. And to get inside and remove those discs, you have to remove the outer diffusion. So every time you set it up you have to completely tear it apart if using any inner accessories.

    I bought a 400 recently because I needed more power outside than my 200s could provide, and I went with the 25" beauty dishes for some harsh light. I need something bigger and might go with this 85 version. The size is very appealing and your light kit video was a huge eye opener. Very helpful as always.

    4:44 It's TWO beauty dish plates, so if you just sandwich them your "accidental" bounce is easily solved. You can make any combination happen this way, no accidental gold bounce ;)

    Thanks for the video Robert. I actually ordered one right after I saw your video on the ad300 video you did. Interesting fact, with the one I received I also received a small circle piece of fabric with silver on one side and black on the other. The fabric has a very small hole and was around the tip the locking piece that is there. So it acts as a beauty dish reflector. I can message you with a pic if you'd like.
    Also, have you seen the extension head for the ad400? I have that as well. Works great, same mount as well. Plus I ordered the ad600 carry bag for hanging it on a shoulder, or as a weight on the light stand.
    Thanks again for your great videos. I always learn something new.

    The other thing with these softboxes is this, If you don't have a bowens standard reflector it will allow you to use the ad400 standard reflector. I had the bowens adaptor on at all times to use the bowens 85cm godox octobox, making it bulky in my photography backpack. The 85cm godox mount softbox makes the ad400 slimmer in my backpack AND allows me to use the slim godox standard reflector that came with the ad400. Buying the 85cm godox softbox gave me the ability to use the standard reflector, and made it slimmer in my backpack.
    For now I'm keeping the 80cm bowens mount octobox, if or when I decide to buy an ad600 or an LED for video that has bowens mount built in, but if I don't buy that I will sell my 80cm bowens octobox and just stick to godox mount modifiers to keep the ad400 slim enough to go straight into my regular backpack.
    The reason this matters is that I live in a city in Norway and I don't always have access to a car, and I often walk or take a bus to my locations. If I lived in the US I'd probably keep to bowens mount for a wider variety of modifiers if I was going to put my gear in a car anyway.

    You should check out the Quantum QF35 octabox's for the AD360/200 style mount. When I picked up some 200's on 'Black Friday' sale I also picked up a pair of the Quantums. They're only about 1" smaller than the AD-S65 in diameter, have a real deflector plate, egg crate grid and pack down super small. Like 36" double fold umbrella small. They're a little bit more money($80-ish) but an excellent alternative to the S-Bracket and Bowens mount for those that run the AD-200's and need a small package. I haven't used them on many paid gigs at this time but that is because I haven't really switched out my speedlights for the AD-200's in my location lighting kit yet. That said, so far I am really liking the results.

    • @jimmyhill9591
      @jimmyhill9591 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jpaden8515 I also looked at the AD-S7(which is a hair smaller and half the price) but between the fabric used, stitching, velcro and interior finish I felt the Quantum unit was better built. I just wish someone would make a small to medium strip box with that mount.
      As to using the extension head, that's one key benefit I've found with them. I can use an articulating arm(22" NOGA) to 'boom' the light off axis of a lightweight stand, no need for a grip head and arm on a heavier stand. Since the vast majority of my work is on-location corporate headshots, a lighter kit is better and a 24" modifier is often more than enough. That's not to say I won't use a C-stand or my Manfrotto 420B combo stand with a bigger modifier in my home studio or for some jobs, but for quick on-location work this combo is looking like a real winner.

    Just wanted to mention, the godox ad-S85 Soft box, that I have just purchased, does not fit my Godox proprietary M mount h600 and h1200 heads, although they appear to be compatible, the diameter of my ad-S85 Soft box mount has a male outside diameter which is exactly the same as the female inside diameter of my Godox M mount heads, making it impossible to attach.
    As I've converted all my modifiers speed rings to the Godox proprietary M mount for a more optimised light spread, I am hopeful that they will fit the new Godox ad-300pro I've just ordered, as I am guessing godox may have opened up the tolerances of the mount to be compatible with the new ad-S65/S85 Soft boxes, or it may simply be that my ad-S85 Soft box has a slightly oversised mount.

      nope, none of the heads will fit inside the inner diameter of the Godox mount. If there is an adapter solution out there (such as bowens mount to godox mount) it may let you but the h200r up against it and get some light in there, but at that point you're not really using a softbox as the light can't bounce around the inside of the modifier walls.

      I like silver, reason being, once diffusion is in front it's practically indistinguishable between the two. But silver affords you higher contrast if you shoot no diffusion. Also, white tends to yellow over time and silver stays the same as long as I've ever had a softbox.

  • @PaulSaxbyPhotography

    Hi,@Robert hall photography I don’t suppose you know if Godox have plans to make a strip light soft box with this mount. I shoot a lot of headshots and normally use strip lights. I have the ad300 pros which I bought because of the compact size but I still need to use my bulky Bowen’s mount strip soft boxes which saves me nothing. I think that godox have limited the range of modifiers for their proprietary mount too much. The two soft boxes are too similar in size to make enough difference to warrant buying both, and the lack of striplight style softbox is really frustrating.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not know their plans for expanding the modifier range on the Godox mount. It’s curious, considering the Godox mount goes back to the original AD600. I would expect their to be a lot more for it but I guess the Bowen’s dominance altered that. Hopefully now that they have a couple lights (400 pro / 300 pro) and the 300 pro is gaining popularity, we will see more modifiers developed.

    you should be able to use these softboxes with the AD600B / BM as well - there has been an adapter available for years.
    And most people having the extension head probably already own it - the infamous locking ring (Godox AD-CS). The exension cable actually uses the Godox mount to lock in.
    I wouldn't want to mount giant softboxes on that piece of plastics, but the AD-S85 probably should still be light enough for that...
    The locking ring doesn't fit the Godox AC strobes, but it does fit into the S-Type bracket - but as Rob pointed out, speedlights are too wide to be used with the mount (maybe the TT350 could fit?).
    I was able to clamp my AD360 into the S-Type bracket with locking ring, though, so the AD200 with barebulb should also fit it. But both have to be clamped right on the edge of the bulb head, which likely will put a lot of stress on there - not ideal.

    Can you use the softbox with the Bowens mount adapter on the ad400?

  • @hackerock
    @hackerock 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    AD-S65S fits perfectly my needs with a Godox V850II, but the thing is that as you said there is no "Type-S2 bracket" for the Godox Mount... Since the video is from March 2020... Does anybody know if there is an adapter for Godox Mount modifiers to Speedlights? Thanks

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Still no direct adapter. And there never will be, as the speedlight head is bigger than the Godox mount opening. There's a bowens to Godox adapter that you could put in a bowens S bracket, but your flash would never make it inside and therefore you'd be flagging the light before it even goes into the softbox, so not using the walls at all. Better off just using a 33" umbrella at that point.

    • @hackerockmedia
      @hackerockmedia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robhallphoto Thank you very much for your reply Rob !!! Too bad, I know an umbrella is the best option, but I was looking for something more "dramatic" like a beauty dish with a grid ... I'm afraid I have no choice but to save up and take 2x AD200, as you have recommended in many of your videos, going in the most "budget” path.
      I do dancers, circus and fitness TFCD photography, no professional, just colabs… so non-neveneu

      Strobius 110 standard. It's perfect for my kit size, but the zipper's durability is an issue.

    While these seem great and the compact size is neat. I am not investing in a new mount that's not compatible with the rest of the gear I have (tons of softboxes, stripboxes, octas, beautydish and different reflectors and more non godox monolights that have the Bowens mount) Specially if it isn't going to be compatible with my AD200s
    Also I don't like how close to the flash tube the new mount is.
    I hope they at least offer a Bowens adapter for their future products.

    I think it's time for Godox to release a new head for the ad200 that would be compatible with the proprietary small softbox mount. For now all the benefits of this flashlight are canceled out by the fact that you need a massive adapter and massive bowens mount softboxes. Even the larger ad300 pro and ad400 pro are compatible with ad-s85 softbox, but the ad200 pro isn't. Crazy.

    Le système de blocage ouvert est capricieux... Et surtout 2 gros inconvénients de ces boites : L'impossibilité de mettre des gélatines, et l'ajout d'accessoires de qualité très médiocres qui se fixent avec des velcros... j'aimais mieux les petits attaches métalliques. Pourquoi godox ne fait rien pour les accessoires gélatines, grid etc... en magnétique ? Dommage car cette monture est super par ailleurs.
