  • The pundit class thought JD Vance performed better than Tim Walz in the vice presidential debate. Voters thought Vance was a good performer, but they couldn't quite shake their skepticism. Puck News's John Heilemann joins Sarah to review voters' reactions to the VP debate and the history of VP picks more broadly.

Here is the difference between the two. "If you broke your leg, Tim Walz is the neighbor who comes over to mow your lawn with out being asked, Vance is the guy who will call the HOA to complain that your grass is too long" Vance has had only about 18 months of government service, and, no executive experience. Walz, served in Congress for 12 years, and, had been elected governor twice, and, has served 6 years as governor of one of the best run states in the country.

I was supporting McCain in 2000. But the Bush supporters claiming that McCain had a black daughter born out of wedlock seemed to change McCain in some fundamental way that I can't quite articulate. That incident along with the Bush/Cheney presidency really pushed me away from the republican party. I still think of myself as independent, but I can't think of a single republican that I've supported since 2000.

Some part (a tiny one) of me feels a little compassion but the other wants to (metaphorically) punch him in the face for that kind of poor behavior. Tim Walz refrained from too many "metaphorical face punches" during the debate and let JDV hoist himself on his own petard by talking mostly lies. @WayneHauber Walz does not emanate anyone. He is exactly who he should be... a good man. A man who loves & cares for his family. The same compassion that he looks out for his neighbors with. As a governor, he treats everyone in his state like a neighbor. He's a natural. He can't just come up with that because he is now a VP candidate. He was a well-respected soldier, teacher, coach, advisor, and husband & father because he is a caring human being who has room in his heart for all those who depend on him. It seriously made me sick in the debate when Vance pounced on Walz son being across the street from a shooting, bc it was so clearly opportunistic, you could see him visibly fake empathy bc he saw an opening to look like a nicer person ("Oh, Tim, I didnt know that, Christ have mercy"), and it was gross. He didnt care. His policy views (do nothing about guns, turn schools into fortresses) also show he doesnt care. He does not care about what Walz and his son went through. The way the two of them are talking about the debate after the fact is also telling. JD Vance is mocking Walz and calling him dumb (whered all that empathy and respect go?) while Walz is focused on the fact that Vance was doing revisionist history and gaslighting us on Trump and his views.

Vance was 55%. Waltz was 45%.
Vance is a confident and smooth talking debater who continually lied.
Waltz won with me because he is a common sense leader and truthful. He simply wasn’t a good debater. I don’t need a great debater for vice president. I need a truthful leader. Another positive for waltz is his experience in congress and as a current governor. Debating skills is not a priority for me.

It is surreal that a man who is so dangerous--and diagnosed as such by top psychiatrists; and guilty of criminal wrong-doing (with the bulk of these actions stopped from fair adjudication in courtrooms); in violation of the emoluments clause and a long time tax cheat (David Cay Johnston has chronicled this)... and caught dead-to-rights with stolen top-secret state documents added to the documentation of his telling 35,000 lies would be entertained as a leader no less allowed to run for office! It is a surreal mess: the terror within.

Kamala is doing the control of the border messaging by talking about the border bill every chance she gets.
But I want to add, as someone who lives in a border state, about and hour and a half from the Mexico border, I do not feel an overwhelming negative impact from the border in my daily life. That’s not to say control of the border isn’t important, but a lot of the hysteria about it feels manufactured. I listen to Trump talk about California like it’s a cartel war zone and we can’t even go to the grocery store and that couldn’t be further from the truth. My kids aren’t losing seats in schools to illegal immigrants, I’m not having a hard time getting healthcare because hospitals are full of illegals. And the jobs thing… the main job roles for illegal immigrants in California are tied to farm labor that citizens aren’t looking to do in the first place because it’s intense labor and California is hot as hell.

    • @linnieroots8223

Trump *totally* manufactures all the hysteria, just like he's doing with the immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, and with the hurricane relief. It's such a danger they should lock him up in pretrial detention in the runup to his upcoming trial. For the sake of public safety.
