  • Trump and Vance are pioneering a form of politics where American power means nothing, everything is bad, and politicians focus on tearing people down-and getting other Americans to do the same. Plus, the challenge of defining freedom, why conservative Jews are giving Trump a pass on his antisemitism, and a good and insightful poll on the presidential race. Timothy Snyder joins Tim Miller.

I want to expand on Professor Synder's answer about the mood in Ukraine. I'm an American surrounded by Ukrainians I talk to every single day, some serving, some in the homefront. What he said about every single person grieving and having lost people is the truth. One of my best friends, has buried several friends, from just one friend group. They have family members serving, or if they're overseas, they have family in harm's way. Many of them are IDPs and already had to evacuate other regions of Ukraine years ago when this war began--in 2014. Every single one of them carries the knowledge that tomorrow is not for granted. The sacrifices these people are making every single day are incalculable. I recommend the Bulwark get some Ukrainians on to talk about this conflict from their own perspective. Their testimony about the war is powerful and moving. They're fighting for their national identity and right to exist.

I cannot express in words how much I admire the Ukrainian people. Their bravery is unmatched. My heart goes out to them. We are doing the bare minimum by supporting their effort, and it's the very least we can do. They are fighting for us, for the free world, and for their country which they love so much. Please support them!

Prisoners of war German soldiers were shown film of the concentration camps and many were, obviously, horrified at what their country had done. I doubt many civilians realized what was happening. And I expect almost no one anticipated that horror.

Especially Jewish Germans. I recently saw a new version of the musical “Cabaret” called “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club” that reminded me of how much in denial many Germans were about what was beginning to happen all around them in 1933. One of the focuses of the play was on a particular German Jewish man in love with a Non Jewish woman who rejects him in the end although she loves him. She is afraid to be with him. He remains clueless about the rising danger to himself because “I am German.” This is a good time for people to read the book the play is loosely based on. Goodby to Berlin, by Christopher Isherwood.

Tim (Miller), I love your work, but how much Hitler-like misconduct is Trump allowed before it is acceptable to point it out? How much demonizing of ethnic minorities, how much racism, how much violence in the streets, how much cult like behavior, how many concentration camps? Should we be worried that Ivana said her Husband had a copy of Hitler’s speeches on his nightstand? Should we be concerned when, like Hitler, Trump refers to political enemies as vermin, or by his Hitler-like promise of a return to a mythic perfect past?
It is worth remembering that gas chambers were not Hitler‘s first “solution”: like Trump, he had planned to place undesirables in concentration camps, and then ship them overseas: to Madagascar, in fact. When that didn’t work out logistically, he developed a different “final solution.” What would happen to Trump’s plan if he couldn’t easily export his millions of immigrants?
After the war, many of Hitler’s followers said they had failed to take his more extreme threats literally - until it was too late. Must Trump engage in actual genocide before it is fair to say he’s gone too far?

Your focus on capitalism has meant money takes over and tells you what to do. You were so fearful of big government that you got taken over by big corporates. I’m a center leftish Jewish person (I relate to Tim’s “liberal libertarian” stance) and antisemitism is absolutely a major issue on both sides but in slightly different ways.
On the right, it’s conspiracy theories and great replacement. Which is beyond harmful and is what historically led to hate crimes against Jews. on the left, it’s “anti-Israel” sentiment, which isn’t inherently antisemitism but can easily become it. I also think it’s important to recognize that there’s a spectrum of stances represented say by those doing the college campuses. There are those just straight up calling for death to Israel, which as a majority Jewish state, is the same as calling for the death of Jews. That’s antisemitism. There are those that think Israel is a colonizer state and think only a Palestinian state should be on that land, despite evidence that both Israelis/jews and Palestinians have historical ties to the land. I don’t necessarily think that’s antisemitism, but I think they are wrong. There’s also those who just want a two state solution (like most people) and the end of Israeli settlements, both of which I agree with. That’s not antisemitism. Then there are those that think we need to stop sending weapons to Israel, because they are obviously inflicting cruel and unnecessary punishment towards civilians. I agree we should condition aid, bc we condition aid for everyone else.
If you’ve made it this far, my conclusion is antisemitism isn’t isolated to one party. Trump is peddling in antisemitism, and has been for years. His character goes against everything Judaism teaches you about how to behave and treat others.

He then stays in the yard and we feed him daily. Every time we go outside, he runs over to the daughter to greet her and rub up on her.
Then he comes up to the back door one day. She opens it, cat enters, finds her bed, plops down on it. She begs us to keep the cat. Cat mission accomplished.
… and we have another who ran the same playbook successfully, only she used me as the patsy. She’s currently sitting on my lap.

Are you concerned about them growing up in an environment that is threatened by global warming?
Do you want them to live in a society where democracy still thrive or you want them to live under a dictatorship?
Do you want them to live in a society that cares about all people, not just the top 1%?
And do you understand that many immigrants come here seeking the American dream, believing in the freedom and opportunities this country offers? If the other guy takes over, do you think that dream will still exist for them?
I hope you can find some compassion for those who are seeking a better life. It’s about more than just immigration. it’s about the kind of future we want for our children.

His extensive knowledge of the history of the people of eastern Europe from the explorations of the Vikings and Greeks into Ukraine, to the horrendous time of Hitler through the present is truly informative and captivating. I also recommend that every American read his best-selling book, On Tyranny, as a wake up call to all citizens to engage and participate in a much needed course-correction of our country's local and federal government. My late relative, born in 1923, was drafted into the army in 1942. He was stationed in the Strasbourg France area, and then sent to Germany, when the camps were liberated. He said that as they marched into the area ( sorry I do not recall exactly which camp) that everyone could literally smell the death in the air. He said it became very clear to him, that it smelled like it does when you encounter a corpse of an animal rotting away, if you have ever had experienced a dog rolling in that and coming home with it on their coat. It is so obvious and nobody can ever deny the Holocaust to me.
My son studied in Lyon some years ago. He rented a room in an old chateau, owned and operated by an elderly French woman and Lyon native, born about the same time as my earlier mentioned relative. She told my son about the time during occupation, when she was riding her bicycle home, during the day and within eyesight of her front door. She said that she was stopped by a teen age Gustopo, he said she was riding too fast, and he wanted to see her papers. Her hands shook as she held her papers out, she began to worry that she would be forcibly arrested and nobody would know. She was not a Jew, her father was forced to work for the occupation because he was a doctor. She said the teen age Gustopo laughed out loud, told her that he was "Just Joking". She said that she never told her father what happened, for fear that he would angrily confront the occupation and be forcibly removed himself. Yeah, the Holocaust was real. The Nazi's were not nice people.
