    Interesting choice of vowel on the first part of "mansions" ....

      Douglas Martin I assume they did it in order to not break vowel purity (which keeps intonation) and continuity with the word "above" ah-bahve. It's easier to do that when the oral pharynx is already in that position. This is choral technique which is much different from solo singing. Plus the diction of many black choirs are modified so that speech patterns don't get in the way.

    Best version I've heard on TH-cam so far. A couple breaths were taken where they shouldn't have been taken and there were a couple times I wanted to hear the chord settle at the cadence but the conductor chose to cut it short. The pace should intensify with a speeding up of the tempo at the key change. Critique aside, this piece was done so much more justice by this choir than most of the ones I hear doing spirituals on TH-cam.
