I actually made this video weeks ago and decided not to post it thinking it was too specific for the channel, and that it looked like crap! But after talking to students and other guitarists and reading your comments, I realized there are so many budding guitarists that are extremely confused by whether they should play left or right-handed (as the comments below demonstrate). Some have been shut down and even victimized by ignorant teachers, and might have been put off playing guitar at all. So, probably against my best judgement and TH-cam's unforgiving algorithm, I decided to go ahead and publish its in the hope that it might help those who stumble upon it. If they can stomach the orangeness!
Being left handed, but being more seasoned (old), there just weren't left handed guitars, so I learned from the beginning right handed. Perfect example of not being allowed to be left handed. Glad to see the channel steadily growing. :)
My cousin who is a right-handed bass player has a group of friends who wanted to create a band together. The weird thing was that everyone including me were all left-handed. I thought that we should start a band called "Synister" using our left-handedness as a gimmick to set us apart. We were all Slavs as well and was thinking of putting in a Slavic feel to the music. Another point for a performer is that as a lefty in a righty band is that the mixed handedness creates a visual balance on stage. If someone intends to teach guitar, it is beneficial to learn both left and right-handed techniques. As a lefty I make a better teacher because a right-handed student simply mirrors everything I do. The reason I want to learn righty as a supplement is because I care about left-handed people and want to be there to encourage them.
I am planning to buy the guitar again after not playing for so long and I just noticed that my right fingers tapping is so strong compared to my left hand considering I like to play fingerstyle. I learned to play using the normal way which is to use the right hand and I don't want to start from scratch again😂
Thanks, really useful. My 7 year old daughter is generally left handed. But this is not that clear cut. This will be really helpful if she wants a guitar
thanks for the video. I am right hand dominant and have a right hand guitar. Turn it over to use the left and it felt better. That is when I searched for your video. Thanks for the info. I have decided to stick with the right. Mainly because of what you have said and that I have a guitar already. Also, I think it will be good practice for my left. Let's just hope I stick with it. Teaching yourself is hard. Take care
Hi Andre good advice. My only other suggestion would be to clap your hands. Which is the top one drumming most likely this should be the handed you play. Rhythm is natural and takes so long to learn. IMHO.
Sorry but nope. I'm officially right handed. With the clap test my right hand is on top, but I feel far more comfortable playing leftie. My whole body rejects playing right handed.
Paul McCartney started out trying to learn right-handed on the guitar. When he was about to give up and turn his back on guitars, he saw a picture of Slim Whitman playing left-handed. He then switched to learning left-handed and never looked back.
I’m a left-handed person. Many years ago as a child I attended the “New York School Of Music” in the Bronx. My mother bought me a guitar (not knowing that it was a right handed guitar) When I went to my first lesson I held the guitar left handed. The teacher; (instead of asking if I was left handed) took the guitar away and scolded “No! No! No!” and turned the guitar over and handed it back to me. Needless to say, he wrecked my mind! I lasted about two weeks and quit. Later I used the same guitar to teach myself to play right handed. Needless to say I’m mediocre at best.
Sorry to hear that! Where you able to overcome it or work around it in your playing? I'd love to hear how you've managed the injury as it relates to your playing. Andre

Hi Chris, I was lucky to be a left-handed player who naturally picked it up right-handed... BTW, did you get the CDs?

I was stabbed in my left forearm and my pinky sucks.
