Rick Beato’s son has taken up guitar and is a leftie. I was a bit surprised Rick didn’t push him to learn rightie style. But I guess the most important thing is to keep motivation high and not put up obstacles.

If you push a lefty, despite that he/she is more comfortable learning lefthanded, then you could psychologically damage them long term. Its a decades old fact regarding other aspects of life.

I'm a lefty who plays right handed and have been doing so for about 40 years. In my experience, if you just want to strum chords, playing a righty guitar if you're left handed is fine. If you want to play quick/complex riffs, licks and guitar solos -- get a left handed guitar. Your fretting timing and accuracy, 2 handed sync is driven by the pick hand. Never the other way round. I could have shorted the learning curve, in my case, from 15 years to say, 3 to 5 -- if I had started off with a left handed guitar.

Great video, alot of stuff here i never thought of that Lefties go through. Paying for the "privilege" of being left handed haha. Video suggestion for the future, what is your amp/modeler setup and how you think through your rig.

6:54 I always had trouble reversing them. My early days I sat down and wrote them out left handed. Now I just buy a left handed chord book.

I just learned by using an upside down right handed guitar. Why? That's what felt natural. No other option occurred to me. There are some drawbacks though. Like I can't palm mute if there's a tremolo bar in my way.

As a left handed guitar player, I would love to see dedicated left handed lessons. I'm surprised there isn't anything intermediate or advanced for left handed players. Scale and chord diagrams presented so that I didn't have to convert them in my head would be really helpful.

Great idea. I've been toying with the idea of doing something like this for a while, but wanted to test the water to see if there was any demand for it.

The first time I held a guitar I naturally held it left handed but was encouraged to learn right handed. I got comfortable playing right handed but have had some issues picking with my non dominant hand. A lot of people say lefties playing right handed have an advantage using their dominant hand on the fretboard. I can’t disagree with that but there’s certainly a disadvantage to picking with the non dominant hand when it comes to rhythm, timing, and speed.

hey Bobby I play lefty myself yrs ago my old man bought me a righty and said play the right way he lost as I flip it and played upside down he wouldn't spring for a lefty the cheap s o b so when I tried a real lefty it screwed me up could some not a lot a few chords notes noda if he would have got me the lefty that would have been great im a chet atkins /merle travis guy and hard to do upside down but oh well at least im still in the game dad has lymphoma and bed ridden at 77 so don't know how long he has but he still gets under my skin and argues the brain wasn't affected even after his stroke in 2016 kid next door was the life saver so a real prize that's why my mother divorced him and moved on if it hadn't been for my small engines lawn mowers etc and bars and Marlboros I would have snapped a long time ago

I write left handed but do everything else right. I’m just learning to play (right handed), but struggling hard. I’m gonna try playing left handed and see how that goes. As for your videos, I think the mirror image format is best.

I am left handed. For the last ten years I started to learn to play and for 10 years I tried to play right handed (I mainly play Acoustic guitar) but I was never able to strum guitar left handed, I even taught myself to fingerpick to a basic level right handed (as you can see from a few wee videos I have) but just two weeks ago I picked up a left handed guitar and instantly I could strum with the left hand as if I’d been doing it for years and my fretting hand is catching up quickly. It’s been an absolute revelation and my final right handed Taylor is now up for sale.

Two of my daughters are both lefties, but one plays left handed the other right handed. I'm right handed, but I can only play left handed. Took a while to figure that out when I was just starting (many moons ago...) because if you're officially right handed they just hand you a right handed guitar...and you suck and you don't know why...Well, I didn't make that mistake with my kids, just told them whatever feels "right", forget the rules. And yeah, it's a bit hard getting a decent leftie guitar, but not impossible at all.

Good video and discussion! That Eternal with the lefty conversion is pretty cool! I like how they handled the jack placement.
Regarding lessons, as a lefty that plays lefty, I actually prefer to see a right handed instructor. I find the "mirror image" to be a good thing and I've just used right handed resources for so long, it's a non-issue. I'd probably have to rewire my brain to use a left handed chord chart! 😅I also tried learning right handed first. That did not work at all. Trying lefty instantly felt more natural.
As far as cost, there are instances where left handed guitars do cost more, but I find that these days lefties usually cost the same. Especially with major manufacturers. When I look on Sweetwater for example, Fenders and Gibsons are the same price for the most part. I'm in the US.I guess that may different where you are?

    • @BobbyHarrisonGuitar
      @BobbyHarrisonGuitar  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's always good when manufacturers don't charge more for lefties. Gordon Smith has been making guitars in the UK for 50 years and they've never charged extra for lefties. Suhr doesn't charge extra either, but Fender and Gibson always have, in my experience.
When I bought my Gibson Les Paul Custom, I had to pay an extra 25% for the privilege of being left-handed. As for PRS, I genuinely think they hate lefties!

I jab with my right hand ........ That's about it. And cutlery I do righty
Did you test the Fender player II ? Is it lacking in quality for lefties?
Does it matter sound wise if you left string a righty electric? I mean if you talk high end acoustic the bridge has to be switched and even in some cases the bracing is left/right specific. I would imagine this is less important on electric(?)

Bobby Harrison . I found when I was invited to join first as a believer in the Lord the Praise Team , I said yea .as left handed I found that when I strummed down from the first string g while the leader being right handed strummed down the fret board , something was not in rhythm . Yes I desire some videos on left handed guitars . Question : in the Romantic Period wasn’t their a Rembrandt or A Painting with a Left Handed gourd like mandolin ?😅

Been working with an instructor for a few months and he noticed my left (fretting) hand is fine, but my strumming hand isn’t working. I’m very very left handed. So this morning I ordered a left handed Squier Affinity Tele just to see if maybe I took the wrong road. And now, having discovered this video, I’m hoping mightily that “that company” you spoke of isn’t Fender… 😆

    • @BobbyHarrisonGuitar
      @BobbyHarrisonGuitar  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I really shouldn't say...but yes, it is Fender! That's only my personal opinion and experience. I've owned several lefty Fender Strats over the years and I've ended up selling all of them for various reasons, but mainly due to tuning stability. I'm sure their right-handed counterparts are great though.
I may have just been unlucky. That said, I recently played a Fender American Ultra Strat and I really liked it. I also once owned a lovely Fender Tele. It's probably easier to find a bad Strat than a bad Tele. The best Strat style guitars I've owned have been made by Gordon Smith and Suhr.
Ultimately, you can't go wrong with a Squier, especially for the money.

    Lefty who plays lefty.
You certainly don't get the same colour options as a lefty, and yes you do pay more.
Never ever played a guitar before I bought it, as you say, shops/stores don't carry lefty models.
I've bought 5 guitars "blind" off the internet and fortunately I've never got a dud yet.
As for the build process in the factory, happy to be corrected but as everything is CNC'd it's just a case of reversing the mould surely?
Luckily, we don't have to buy lefty pedals😄👌🏻

Question. 🙋 for a left handed telecaster guitar needing a new control harness is there such a thing as a left handed control harness or are such harnesses universal?

    • @BobbyHarrisonGuitar

That’s a good question. I’ve never really thought about it. I’m assuming it’s the same panel, but just flipped upside down. Then again, I’m rubbish when it comes to guitar maintenance and setups.

Starr Guitar Systems makes wiring harnesses with reverse taper pots (so your knobs turn and taper correctly on a left handed guitar) I just put one in my Les Paul. He makes them for Teles, Strats, etc. as well. There are some others out there too.

guitar companies crusify left handed people and choice is very limited I think it wrong but left handed people have an extra perseption in there brain making us smarter than right handed people taught myself mechanics /guitar /landscaping etc no college hands on training the best I always say

I never understood this, maybe because I never played a guitar lol but don't you use BOTH hands to play it? It's not like your other hand isn't doing anything they are both busy so what does it matter.

I guess you'd have to be left-handed to really understand. I tried to learn right-handed, but it felt unnatural. Drummers use both hands and both feet, but some lefties set up left-handed. Some play open-handed.
