In this great piece Brahms expects the piano to be played as an orchestra. Kempff plays this piece exactly as Brahms intended. The fugue is one of the greatest and most elaborated I've seen.
    Great interpretation!!

There is no good reason to doubt about Wilhelm Kempff as the pianist, given from the release data. The length of 24:29 is exactly like in the edition "Wilhelm Kempff - Schumann. Brahms. The Complete1950s Solo Recordings" by Deutsche Grammophon, re-edited 2003. Also the combination w/ op.10 on the same disc is equivalent.
Cf. also w/ another YT-entry nearby, giving that edition.

The production/ edition date of Deutsche Gramophon was 1958.

Wilhelm Kempff was an uneven genius , who could play very well . He also was guilty of major memory slips of music that he knew very well . Kempff also gave lessons on Beethoven in Italy till he was older.

Are you SURE this is Wilhem Kempff? The sterling competence, solid sound and clarity of articulation in all the tough spots make it seem unlikely. Kempff's playing is often much "sketchier" than this -- even downright skittish at times. While I hear a bit that here and there in the fugue, this performance overall is extremely good.

I'm not totally convinced. I heard him play this very piece on a Sunday afternoon in London in about 1967. He didn't sound at all like this, as his playing had much more colour and atmosphere. While certainly skittish in choice of which rhythms to emphasise, which voices to bring out (often the least plausible that could be imagined), his playing was still pretty sound at that period. On the other hand, studio recordings of the time often sounded very flat.
