Thanks for all the wonderful comments folks! At time of writing this comment we're now in SHB 5.2! My community kept telling me to upload to TH-cam so, I finally did! You're welcome to come join us as we get to the end of Shadowbringers and begin Endwalker soon - all of my VODs are over on my Twitch channel under the collections tab twitch.tv/EndyD20🌟
His strained sob of: *"My....son!"* as he tries and fails to maintain his composure, and the reactions of Emmanellain & Artoirel, with the former remarking how: *"It felt like some cosmic joke....except that it WASN'T FUNNY."* and the latter lamenting how there were so many things that he'd never get to talk to Haurchefant about made it so hard to not cry (and it's extremely rare for me to be moved to tears by a game or movie....to date a game has only ever managed to pry a tear from me *once* ....and FF XIV has yet to manage it, though they've come close....I'll have to wait and see if Endwalker can accomplish a feat that only Lost Odyssey has thus far been able to accomplish, as I'm still working through the latter bits of Shadowbringers). In that moment I wanted nothing more than to be able to step into my character's shoes for real and just try to offer whatever comfort I possibly could (even if all I could do was to place a comforting hand on their shoulder), in spite of my own sadness at losing Haurchefant. It shows just how much Haurchefant's family cherished and loved him in spite of the fact that he was Lord Edmont's *illegitimate* son (and thus, he was only a half-brother to Emmanelain & Artoirel). Hell, the fact that even his subordinates are absolutely devastated and heartbroken over his death just shows how much of a class act and a good man he was. To inspire that much of a reaction....that much grief in your subordinates....in your soldiers is a clear display of the quality of his character.
It's one thing to be able to maintain your composure in the face of your own grief. But when you are surrounded by the grief of others, basic human empathy turns around and stabs your composure in the back, letting you be carried away by the tide of their sorrow.
for some reason i had in my mind “well, its a video game, if i go back to camp dragonhead he will still be there to talk to, even tho he is ‘dead’”, only to get there, walk in, and all you get is his portrait on the wall. and i broke down again. Goddammit ffxiv, why you do this to us.
I've just finished the level 88 MSQ in Endwalker and still, even now, I point to this moment as one of the best (albeit incredibly sad) moments of the game. We love you Hauchefant! Here's to a cup of hot cocoa when we meet again eh.
Haurchefaunt was the truest and most upright friend our WoL had to this point! Took us in, never asked for anything for this act of kindness.... Love him to tis day, everytime someone reaches this point, i lose a tear...
He's the best friend anyone could have ever asked for, and he embodied the perfect ideal of a true Knight. Unflinchingly loyal, humble, generous, selfless, and kind. We had only met him fairly briefly prior to us having to flee to Ishgard, and yet....when we returned with nearly broken spirits and tremendously weary from the long lonely trek into the snowy regions of Coerthas & Ishgard, he welcomed us with open arms and gave us a place to rest and recover in safety....and then he even went the extra mile by then requesting for his father to accept us into House Fortemps as wards of the house (essentially meaning we had all been adopted into House Fortemps as family). Haurchefant welcomed us with open arms into his family with a smile and cheer, and vowing to help us to clear our names in any way possible. And House Fortemps in turn proved themselves to be no less noble and open-minded. To some of us he was our best friend, to others our brother, and to some perhaps even more than that. So to lose him already hit hard....but to lose him to Ishgardian treachery of all things, for him to die at the hands of a fellow countryman was, in my eyes, the ultimate insult. He'd given so much for Ishgard without a second thought or a moment's hesitation, and yet the one time he openly questions the actions of the Archbishop, he is cast aside like trash. Haurchefant deserved a far better fate....though I'm sure all of us would much rather have had him live on and continue to stand at our side. He raised us up when we were at our lowest point, and yet when he was most in need of help....we couldn't do anything to help him and repay his generosity and kindness. And that's the worst part. Try as we might, we can never truly repay him for everything he'd done for us....though we can damn well honor his memory to the best of our ability (like how we can share his final words with Ryne in Shadowbringers)!
Lord Fortemps breaking down at the end there just... gets me. There's something about a knight being unable to continue the upright charade and breaking down, because everyone in the room knows and is feeling the same weight. It always reminds me of King Theoden from the Lord of the Rings movies. "No parent should have to bury their child." Heavensward is REALLY where FF14 introduces the feels, and I'm thrilled to say that this isn't the last of the game's magnificent character-driven plot moments. The Warrior of Light, the Scions, and all the main characters are all badasses, but they aren't immune to loss, and I think that's why the player can connect with them so well.
Once I finally get around to leveling Paladin, I will likely glamour his shield onto any other shield I am using (I've also permanently adopted his title "Of The Silver Fuller"), ideally the shield with the hole in it, as a constant tribute to him. Hell, I think a cool touch would be if you used the House Fortemps shield (either the shield itself or it as a glamour), then anytime you used Passage of Arms (or even any defensive cooldown), a spectral image of Haurchefant would be shown holding up his shield at your side (or overlay your character with his "ghost" while Passage of Arms is active).
So when Haurchefant first showed up...I was uncertain of him. He seemed far too eager to help us. But over time, I came to understand that's just who he was...he saw us as a hero and had unwavering trust in us. First time in a long time a game made me weep like a child.
Fun fact: During Heavensward, you could not block magic damage. So Haurchefant took that spear well knowing that it was impossible to block. After this, the WoL trained so hard, that, from Stormblood onwards, PLD can block magic attacks, too. I'm pretty sure this is actually a lore point, too. Also, in the Extreme version of the trial where he shows up, his attack gives you a healing debuff, so the wound not being able to be healed is ingame lore as well.
Love how they mix class abilities with the story of the game and it’s up to you to create your own story on why. Paladin and Haruchafont go great together story-wise.
An additional lore reason for why it killed him: healing in xiv is stated to work by accelerating the body's natural healing processes, so you can't curaga something that wouldn't have gotten fixed on its own given enough time. Getting your internal organs blended is generally beyond the body's scope of repair
I also believe if you mouse over the debuff to get a better explanation on it the text reads "There is nothing you could have done" it just made me cry during the extreme fight.
The fact Count Edmond's voice actor has passed away makes all the scenes with him weigh that much more. The only remaining VA of that family alive is Emmanellain's. Even his attendants VA has passed I believe.
The line from Alphie about the wound not healing was added only recently. Prior, you only discovered in the EX trial why it couldn't be healed. All these years and expansions later and this scene still hits like a truck. Was so out of the blue. You just finished a dungeon, victory lap right?
It was that cutscene that made me pick up Dark Knight. I stopped my own progression in game so that when they saw me again I would not only be a knight, but Vengance itself. Our boy's sacrafice has always stuck with me as a tank player.
I main RDM (and I still do), so imagine how much harder it hit to be using a Job that can actually use healing and revival magic, and yet there's still nothing we can do to save him.
I love head-cannoning for my WOL that they awakened as a Warrior with the beast during the Thoradin fight. Just savage fury while trying to make sure no one gets hurt again
@@sanddry738My WoL went the *opposite* way. She was pushed into Warrior after the events of Ul’Dah at the end of ARR, spent most of it brooding harder than an edgy goth teen, and didn’t even take her helmet off in front of others until she was there with Haucefont.
In the Japanese version he also say “your smile is truly splendid”. I have that tattooed on my arm and I can’t read it without smiling. Haurchefant, my knight, my love ❤
Just saw you on grinding gear's podcast talk and going to watch all the emotional bits. I love watching new players go through the emotions for the first time. Thank you for uploading this and being part of the ffxiv community. o/
THAT moment is the moment players realize 2 important things: 1) FFXIV can and will make you feel, and not always happy feels. 2) You are going to beat the crap out an old man and a bunch of knights, and the beatdown will be legendary.
Welcome to Heavensward. This was the point that broke many of us years ago, and no matter how many times I see it I always start tearing up. I hope you enjoy the rest of Heavensward.
Great content, love your investment in the characters, but you've also got some hilarious edits thrown in too! A+ edit: just finished the video, what a beautiful send off edit you did. Haurchefant would have appreciated it.
You meantioned npc for slower runs, also useful for practice too. When i first picked up healer, i didnt know how to target or anything so i queued into a npc and figured out everything i needed to play with other pcs.
Being completely honest, seeing Haurchefaunt die doesn't have much of an effect on me, just due to how prevalent the moment is around the community, but watching Edmont break down always activates my tear ducts.

As someone who rarely has time to watch Twitch but loves watching reactions on youtube, I appreciate it.
i LOVE watching youtube reactions to ffxiv! thank you for uploading, if you choose to continue you'll certainly find me there :P
As sad as Haurchefaunt's death was watching his father breath down and just hearing the pain and grief in his voice is what broke me.

“so nice to finally hang out with him” I’M FINE EVERYTHING IS FINE. 😭😭😭
We were all there listening to him talking about that and you have NO IDEA how hard it was to keep mum.

After 8 years his death still haunts me
I had Hauntfaunt Ghoststone in my duty as the tank, and all three of us just broke down crying.

The VA knocked that one out of the park. He'll be missed.
"I would love to get Haurchefaunts shield"...you will sir, you will 😢

Actually, Artoirel's VA is still around as well, unless that's recently changed?

29:20 this is the part that brought me to tears. I'm a dad to 3
Yeah the father reaction is what really breaks me
Just saw you on grinding gear's podcast talk and going to watch all the emotional bits.
I love watching new players go through the emotions for the first time.
Thank you for uploading this and being part of the ffxiv community. o/
The backflip master fully sent me into a laughing fit. Top notch
Also don't forget what Haurchefant said to his father right before the dungeon.
Ah yes, Heavensward...
The moment XIV really shows you just how deep its prepared to stab you emotionally!
Too deep for healing magic apparently. 😭
THAT moment is the moment players realize 2 important things: 1) FFXIV can and will make you feel, and not always happy feels. 2) You are going to beat the crap out an old man and a bunch of knights, and the beatdown will be legendary.
is this the new Vault Meta? Have the streamer teamed up with Haurchefaunt to get them even more attached?
It’s good to see Haurchefant’s nobility was recognised, and he joined the ‘holey’ order
Oh you're lovely. Adding you to the people I'm following for ffxiv tears and cheers.
After I ran this the first time, when I was leaving, there were 2 RPers outside dressed as Esti and Haurchefaunt >_> Like, rub it in why don't you!
i have played this game since 2.0 as a beta tester for PS3 and i still cry to this scene its a powerful scene "a smile better suits a hero"
Awesome editing on that backflip! Loved it! I am convinced and I am subscribed.
Hope this subscription pays for the therapist fee

Such a fun video! Love the editing. Please give us more of this content!
it's 9:01am and the first 6 second of this video have already brought me to tears. kupos to you
Out of all the Endys on youtube, you are my favorite.
Ah yes emotional damage the game. I'm here again for the pain
That "Kid walks into willy wonka's factory" face. Missed it lol
Playing Dragoon in this expansion is pretty satisfying. Thinking about doing it when I NG+ the story.
Count Edmondt's reaction to the news broke me, as a father you want so much for your children and their future.
This feels like it was 24,999 hours ago.
we have great need of Kumis and Cheese to suit this entertainment
4:32 you get a like just for this. 😂😂
Lmao the editing is fantastic. Thanks for making this!
Great content, love your investment in the characters, but you've also got some hilarious edits thrown in too! A+
edit: just finished the video, what a beautiful send off edit you did. Haurchefant would have appreciated it.
And then ALONG CAME ZEUS!
I had been putting off watching this because I knew I would cry 😭
